[cayugabirds-l] Bobolinks

2012-06-05 Thread M Kardon
With little effort, Fred and I located 4 male Bobolinks in the fields and trees
just downhill from the intersection of West King Road and Sandbank Road late
this morning. Also lots of tree and barn swallows and red-winged blackbirds.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Crane

At 6:45 this morning in the field across from 218 Bundy Road there was one
sandhill crane. It was still there about 10 minutes later when I returned to
the same spot on my walk. I walk in this area frequently, and have never seen
one here before. Marsha Kardon

[cayugabirds-l] witnessed bird drama

2012-05-22 Thread M Kardon
Yesterday morning I heard the thump of a bird strike on the dining room window
(the only one without a spider web decal on it, so maybe they work). I walked
over to check for a downed bird, arriving within 10-15 seconds of the thump,
and saw two Baltimore orioles on the grass just under the windows, one with its
wings partially out and face down, the other standing right next to it. Within
a second or two of my arrival at the window, the standing bird pecked the other
bird on the neck, and the downed bird jerked and brought its head up, but then
slumped again. The standing bird then called hoarsely, then immediately pecked
the other bird even harder on the neck. This time it jerked again, then,
within a second or two, both birds flew off into the woods together. I've
never seen one bird help another in this way. It happened so quickly and was
so surprising that I forgot to notice whether they were males or females or one
of each. Marsha Kardon

After the fact, as they flew away, I realized I hadn't noticed whether they

somehow, it looked like it. Marsha Kardon

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] forsythia for birds

Since this has been such a spectacular season for forsythia, I thought I'd
mention that my bird feeding area is flanked on both sides by large forsythia
bushes. In every season, the feeder birds find shelter there between feedings,
and when danger threatens. Right now the bushes are beautiful AND full of
birds, and my FOY Chipping Sparrow just popped out of one for a few minutes of
pecking at the seed on the ground. One of my bushes is ancient and huge, and
requires twice-a-year pruning (not to confine its shape, just its size), but
the other is only a few years old, an off-shoot of the older one, and is a
usual staging area for sparrows and juncos etc. on their way to the feeder. A
cheap, simple landscaping plant! I recommend it. (Also, in cold winters, birds
seem to eat the buds, and in those years, my forsythia blooms in October!)

I take no stand on the crow shoot in Schuyler County this coming weekend, but I
will be giving a talk about how cool crows are at 1:00 PM Saturday, 11 Feb
2012, at the Old Havana Courthouse Theater, 408 West Main Street, Montour
Falls, NY. (In the top of the County Courthouse.) The talk is free and open to
the public.

Several of my crow research collaborators and I will be there to talk crows,
show photos and videos, and pass out crow trading cards. We will have
chocolate, too.

Come on over and see the crow show.

[cayugabirds-l] Legality of crow shoot?

2012-02-09 Thread M Kardon
I am not clear about the legality of the Schuyler crow shoot.
The American crow is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty
Act of 1918. However, there is a depredation order for blackbirds,
cowbirds, grackles, crows, and magpies. This can be viewed on
the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, link below:

http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfrsid=9c040593bbdf74735e0a72d67dcacf29rgn=div8view=textnode=50:8.0.1.1.4.4.1.3idno=50

In the order's language, crows can be killed when they

are committing or about to commit depredations on ornamental or shade trees,
agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in such
numbers and manner that they are a health hazard or other nuisance.

In addition, non-lethal methods of control of depredation must be tried before
lethal methods may be used. Non-toxic shot or non-toxic bullets (from a list
of approved shot) must be used if a firearm is used.

I question whether the Schuyler crow shoot is in accordance with federal law
since the plan
is to shoot crows anywhere in the county, and simply for recreation and to win
a competition.

[cayugabirds-l] Eastern phoebe sighting

This morning, while surveying my back yard

it with my binoculars, then it flew off.

According to eBird, this is a very unusual

[cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake sightings

2011-04-06 Thread M Kardon
This morning at Dryden Lake we saw 1 Horned Grebe, 6-7
red-breasted mergansers, common and hooded mergansers, 1 common
loon, many ring-necks, a pair (male and female) of scaups,
two male buffleheads, a pair belted kingfisher and two wood ducks.
On the path by the lake we saw a brown creeper.

We viewed the pond on George Road from the road and saw about 6
green-winged teals, two American black ducks, many ring-necks,
two buffleheads. We then walked along the old railroad track
and saw about 8-10 wood ducks fly up from the stream beside the track.

A very satisfying excursion!

[cayugabirds-l] Redpolls etc.

2011-01-02 Thread M Kardon
For the first time ever we had two Common Redpolls at our feeder on Perry Lane
on west hill this morning. Also, several House Finches enjoyed splashing
around in our birdbath in water from melted snow. Marsha Kardon

[cayugabirds-l] King Eider at Stewart Park

2010-12-05 Thread M Kardon
I spent about 15 minutes around 2pm today enjoying excellent views with and
without binoculars (too close for anything but low power on my scope!) of the
King Eider swimming, diving and eating crayfish (I think) in Fall Creek near
the boathouse. He was often as close as 15 feet from the boathouse dock, and
did not seem at all afraid of me and the other three birders there. Then he
swam toward the lake and lighthouses. How wonderful to have this community and
list serve to alert us of these wonderful opportunities! Marsha Kardon
