Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bird Club Trip-Park Preserve, Saturday May 11

2013-05-08 Thread Reid Rumelt
Hello everyone,

Regarding this Saturday's Bird Club trip, would anyone be able to pick up a
transportation-challenged college freshman from somewhere on Cornell's campus
prior to heading over to the Lab? Email is rb...@cornell.edu if anyone is
interested.

Many thanks,

 Hi all,
I will be leading a Cayuga Bird Club trip to the Finger Lakes Land Trust’s
 Park Preserve (http://www.fllt.org/protected_lands/protected_lands1.php?id=42)
Meet me at the Lab of Ornithology Visitor’s parking lot at 7:30 sharp on
Saturday for this half-day trip (back at the lab around 1 pm). It should be
the peak of spring migration and very very birdy!! Wear hiking shoes, bring
 bug spray and a snack.
Open to all, members and non-members alike.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] migrating geese

2013-02-28 Thread Reid Rumelt
The Snow Geese were out as well today. I observed two flocks of around 30 geese
each flying north over the Cornell Ag Quad just after noon.

 Hi all,
During a short walk up Sapsucker Woods Rd. between 1 and 2, there was a brief
window of open sky which was full of migrating geese! I didn’t have my
binoculars with me, but I’m pretty sure they were Canada geese. There were 5
or 6 large nw flying multi-V flocks, each of 200-300 birds. Then the clouds
moved in from the southwest and I saw no more flocks.
The weather people are predicting a stormy April, but the birds don’t
 believe it!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Freese Rd LeConte's Sparrow NOT re-found 20 Nov

2012-11-20 Thread Reid Rumelt
To follow up on Dave Nutter's recent mailing, I was unable to re-find the Le
Conte's Sparrow in my survey of the area from 3:30 PM to 4:15 PM this
afternoon. No other birders were present while I was in the area, although I
cannot speak for coverage earlier in the afternoon.

Good luck to everyone,

The Le Conte's Sparrow was NOT re-found this morning near the pond or in
adjacent grassy and weedy fields on Freese Road, although several birders
quietly searched and waited for it to show up throughout the morning. Given
its secretive nature it is possible that the bird is still around, and that
there were just too many people for it to feel comfortable coming out into
the open, but it seemed not to be there. To add to the disturbance, at
mid-morning tractors arrived to mow most of the community garden and much of
the weedy area to the south, and to mow the already-cut corn stubble field
immediately west and north of the pond. I assume by the lack of information
on eBird, the CayugaRBA, and Cayugabirds-L that the bird was not re-found in
 the afternoon either.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga storm fallout help - apologies for the duplicate

2012-10-30 Thread Reid Rumelt
Hello everyone,

I'm aware that CayugaBirds isn't generally used for organizing rides, but in
the wake of the most recent bird fallout over Lake Cayuga, I've decided to be
audacious. If anyone with a car was already planning to take a birdwatching
trip down to the lake after 2:30 PM today, either to Myers Point or Long Point,
I would be more than happy to pay for gas (or similar form of reciprocation) in
exchange for tagging along.

Thank you all for understanding the plight of a bipedal-bound college freshman,

Reid Rumelt
