[cayugabirds-l] RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at my suet feeder and trees!

2011-07-09 Thread Watt W. Webb
A casual early afternoon glance down at Cayuga Lake from my study
just now was distracted by my suet feeder that is mounted above the
west porch: It revealed a RED HEADED WOODPECKER for about 5 minutes
of spectacular beauty! I hope it returns! This is my first in about
10 years high on Teeter Rd.

This Red Head flew, after several minutes of busy feeding on the
suit, into our nearby dense tree which serves a a resting place for
our feeders. This has been especially true for species that i did
not expect to see depleting our suit feeders, including red Wing
Blackbirds, Blue Jays [with little success in their feeding], and
other Blackbird species.

I hope the Red Head returns, and maybe moves in

After stopping last week on the way to Montesuma to look
unsuccessfully for the reported Redheaded Woodpecker in the woods
along next to highway this one was a delight. Today was especially
rewarding from reflections on my childhood about 65 years ago in
rural Missouri where visits to country farms frequently showed me the
Red Heads in the tree-hedges along the country farm fields.

[cayugabirds-l] American Crows as "Woody Woodpeckers"!

2011-05-08 Thread Watt W. Webb
Our metal grid screened woodpecker suit cakes are being invaded and
consumed by the 2 resident Crows that have been visiting our feeder
area for months and have finally learned from the various family
Woodpeckers which they drive away for their own now-skillful feeding
hangs from the suet frames feeding carnivorously on the suit!

This invasion has driven the Red Bellied Woodpeckers off to the fine
black seed screes which they do seem to enjoy.

[cayugabirds-l] Rose-breasted grosbeak

2011-05-07 Thread Watt W. Webb
Rose-Breasted grosbeak male has arrived at my Teeter Rd feeders just
as last year. I hope that a mate turns up too and that they stay in
the vicinity with occasional feeder visits until offspring appear and
mature as several times in past years. watt webb.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Mockingbirds singing

2011-03-20 Thread Watt W. Webb
The Mockingbirds have begun their chanting songs in the treetops
along Teeter Road in Lansing high above Cayuga Lake at about noon
today. By their definition spring has come!

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture's breakfast

2011-03-20 Thread Watt W. Webb
Saturday a.m.surprise: a flight of about 6 to 8 Vultures, mostly
Turkey circled our hilly areaway above east side of Cayuga Lake for
about an hour. Then I discovered 6 of them in our garden bushes and
and trees consuming remains of several small 4 legged bodies out on
theatgrass near the trees for an hour or 2. Later in the day and
still today I noticed several Vultures continuing to scope the whole
hillside from lake shore to hill tops.

On a new note our first Robins have arrived yesterday evening and
the Goldfinch crowd has began to show bright gold colors.

The usual spring flow of Northern Mockingbirds with their
distinctive, repetitive songs have not caught my attention yet, tho'
the weather seems right. I will have to listen on the hills to watch
their usual up-hill spring drift and expression of mating calls.

[cayugabirds-l] winter additions on Teeter rd.

2010-12-10 Thread Watt W. Webb
A Northern Flicker, with bird feeder experience arrived at ours on
upper Teeter Rd. this morning, joining the numerous Red Bellies,
Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers. The first White Throat Sparrows arrived
just last week and the usual Junco flock on the deck has begun to
build up. Hmmm, I can't ignore some competition from the squirrels
that compete for the spilled seed on the deck there seem to be
more Goldfinches than in the summer but, not such gold gold now and
lots of Purple Finches. Numerous squirrels compete for the feed that
spills A few Crows seem to use our deck as a social center early
in the morning too
