That seems like a very unusual spot for that bird.

[cayugabirds-l] Beebe Lake

2016-02-29 Thread W. Larry Hymes
On my walk around Beebe early AM today: Quite a bit of open water with
4 COMMON MERGANSER. Also CANADA GEESE are apparently staking out
nesting sites on the island towards east end of Beebe. From other
posts, seems birds are getting a jump on spring.

We had our first ROBIN of the season at our house. Still waiting on our
first Redwings and Grackles.

trying to rescue. They have successfully captured a couple of them Not a
wild hybrid. I am going to copy the other people concerned with your email,

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Beebe lake this morning

2011-11-10 Thread Scott Haber
There has been a flock of mostly black domestic/barnyard ducks that were
dumped at Beebe sometime over the summer. They could frequently be seen
making forays between the Dean's Graden behind Warren Hall and the southern
shore of Beebe, and would occasionally come up to people seemingly looking
for handouts so I didn't expect them to survive for very long, but I came
across them again just a few weeks ago when I nearly ran them over as they
slowly crossed Forest Home Drive, again along the southern shore of Beebe.

They don't seem to have much in the way of survival instinct, but if it was
actually a duck and not Hope's American Coot as Jay suggested, I'd imagine
it was one of this gang.

[cayugabirds-l] Beebe Lake Dryden Lake again (Great Egret)

2011-04-05 Thread Jay McGowan
Okay, last post for the day (probably). I checked Beebe Lake around noon
today and found two HORNED GREBES (one in mostly basic and the other mostly
alternate plumage) and a pair of LESSER SCAUP.

On my way home I checked George Road again, where the only different bird
was a male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and Dryden Lake, where I found a female
CANVASBACK close to the fishing access and a cold GREAT EGRET on the north
shore.

Canvasback puts the Dryden duck total for the day at an amazing 20 SPECIES
(missing only shoveler and scoters), and 22 for Tompkins County (with
White-winged Scoter and Northern Shoveler at Myers.) I feel like I've been
looking at ducks more than usual this spring...

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Beebe Lake, etc: Bay-breasted and other warblers

2010-09-13 Thread Hope Batcheller
Hi all,

I birded along the south edge of Beebe Lake and the Mundy Wildflower Gardens
today. The highlight was a mixed warbler flock near Beebe Lake, including
Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Parula, BT Green and BT Blue. The wildflower
gardens were fairly quiet, except for a smallish mixed flock containing
almost exclusively Red-eyed Vireos and Chestnut-sided Warblers. The full
list follows:

[cayugabirds-l] Beebe Lake

2010-03-11 Thread Ryan Douglas
I stood at the overlook in the SE corner of Beebe Lake at Cornell this
morning for about a half hour to see what might come by. A RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRD was singing from down below and a KILLDEER and BELTED KINGFISHER
made some noise, but went unseen. A TURKEY VULTURE lazily circled over the
lake, and while I was following it a TREE SWALLOW jetted through my field of
view determinedly heading north. One adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL made a
brief stop on the ice before heading NW. The only waterfowl on the lake were
a pair of COMMON MERGANSERS and a few CANADA GEESE.

My first woodchuck of the year stumbled out of a hole near the overlook in a
daze before taking a control slide (or maybe it was just a clumsy rodent)
down the snow covered slope to lake level.

Good birding,
Ryan
