Re: [cayugabirds-l] Beebe lake this morning
This is one of the domestic ducks that was dumped and people are currently trying to rescue. They have successfully captured a couple of them Not a wild hybrid. I am going to copy the other people concerned with your email, perhaps someone will want to contact you to help them locate this holdout. Thanks for this update. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Beebe lake this morning
There has been a flock of mostly black domestic/barnyard ducks that were dumped at Beebe sometime over the summer. They could frequently be seen making forays between the Dean's Graden behind Warren Hall and the southern shore of Beebe, and would occasionally come up to people seemingly looking for handouts so I didn't expect them to survive for very long, but I came across them again just a few weeks ago when I nearly ran them over as they slowly crossed Forest Home Drive, again along the southern shore of Beebe. They don't seem to have much in the way of survival instinct, but if it was actually a duck and not Hope's American Coot as Jay suggested, I'd imagine it was one of this gang. -Scott On Thu, Nov 10, 2011 at 11:19 AM, Michele Mannella mk...@cornell.eduwrote: Hi everyone, For the last couple of mornings, from the footbridge over Beebe Lake, I've seen an all black duck dabbling in the pool of the first waterfall. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Beebe lake this morning
I haven't seen this duck, but for what it's worth, an AMERICAN COOT (good campus bird!) has been foraging around the east end of Beebe Lake. It was first found by Hope Batcheller on Wednesday and was still present last night. For what it's worth, the dark, shiny-all-over ducks are the domestic breed known as Cayuga Duck. Thanks for that Kevin. If anyone is interested in learning any more I have a link that you can look at http://www.hobbyfarms.com/farm-resources/livestock-resources/cayuga-duck-breed-profile.aspx They are very lovely and I am so happy that some compassionate people have taken on their rescue as a project.
