Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Loons on Seneca

2022-11-25 Thread Dave Nutter
Late this morning there were 5 Common Loons on Cayuga Lake visible from the
Allan H Treman State Marine Park as I scoped northward from the shore. The sky
was cloudy, but the air temperature must’ve been close to the water
temperature, because there was so little shimmer, and I had a good view between
when the fog lifted and when the rainshowers set in. Anyway, there are still
Loons on Cayuga Lake, enough for them to have spread more or less to the south
end.

So far winds like that have not produced much. There really haven't been
any good winds yet. The forecast for here shows Monday has a good chance
with strong W NW wind. Fingers crossed! It's getting late in their season
but nothing certain anymore.

[cayugabirds-l] Common Loons etc

2016-10-29 Thread Donna Lee Scott
11-12 in middle of Cayuga Lake just off my shore here in Lansing. More north
and south.
Can hear much "hooting" from them. To me it sounds like squeaky, high-pitched
dog barks.

They were joined by lots of Ring Billed Gulls, a few Herring Gulls, and a
couple DC Cormorants hoping to steal fish from Loons.
Then a male White Winged Scoter flew by, going south!

Yellow Rumped Warbler up by RR track, along with all the feeder birds and
Woodpeckers (Downy, Hairy, Red Bellied).

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Loons Whitney Point Reservoir June 19th.

2012-06-21 Thread Donna Scott
I occasionally see Common Loon or Loons on Cayuga Lake in Lansing in the summer
- in breeding plummage.
I always wonder if they are breeding somewhere, but where could it be? The
frequent waves from motor boat wakes could wash away lakeside nests.
I have never seen Loon chicks in summer, however.

A friend of mine found two COMMON LOONS Tuesday June 19th

on Whitney Point Reservoir in Broome County while fishing. He said
the birds were yodeling and were black-colored. So apparently
they were in breeding plumage. He often fishes in the Adirondacks
and knows these birds well. He also had a very distant cell phone image
that indeed looked like a loon. I will be heading up there tomorrow so
maybe I can get a look. This could be a first summer record
for Broome County. So far, no one can recall a summer record
down here. Does anyone know the status of this species outside
the Adirondacks in NY? I would imagine there has been some summer reports in
the Finger Lakes in the past. Thanks.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Common loons

2011-11-09 Thread Sarah Gould
We took a boat ride yesterday along the west shore of Cayuga Lake from
Maplewood Road to Taughannock Park. We saw one group of five loons and five or
six individual loons. We also saw two adult bald eagles along the shore of the
Girl Scout camp, about halfway between Maplewood and Taughannock.

Has anyone been watching the lake for migrating common loons yet? We saw a few
in the water off Taughannock last week.
