Re:[cayugabirds-l] Grasshopper

2021-10-24 Thread Suan Yong
Piglets corner is the lone tree in the field between Bluegrass Lane and Freese
Road.

FYI after my initial encounter with the grasshopper sparrow, it flew off and I
didn't refind it on my way back. I was told to be patient as it will go off
elsewhere then return to the piles.

Also in the area are Vesper Sparrows, along with plentiful Eastern Bluebirds
and circling Turkey Vultures.

[cayugabirds-l] Grasshopper Sparrows are around

2020-05-31 Thread Alicia Plotkin
Hi,

I think there are a lot more of these guys than people realize.  If you
don't happen to know what a grasshopper sparrow sounds like, take a
listen here
 - it's
pretty distinctive.  At least in Lodi, Ovid & Romulus, many of the
fields that harbor bobolinks also have a grasshopper sparrow or two or
three if you stop and listen.  They don't sing as continually as the
bobolinks do, but they pipe up periodically and their song carries
surprisingly well. Even the introductory very high tick notes often can
be heard - higher and shorter than a Savannah Sparrow's - and the buzzy
main part of the song is distinctive and clearly audible over a distance.

Grasshopper Sparrows have been annual residents on the western section
of Combs Rd in Ovid and are back again this year, although later than
usual.  They also are back on McCarriger Road and on Rte 131 just south
of Willard Wildlife Management Area (also in Ovid), and may well be in
WWMA as well, I haven't had time to check.  In years past they have been
in the fields leading down to Lodi Point in Lodi, in fields on Hayt
Corners Rd near Iron Bridge Road in Romulus, and other spots between
Seneca and Cayuga Lakes including many of the grasslands in the National
Forest, and likely on the east side of Cayuga Lake, too.

As you note birds the Breeding Bird Atlas, you miight want to keep an
ear out. Grasshopper Sparrows are singing right now and since they are a
good grassland indicator, it might be particularly useful later to have
accurate entries for them now.

Plus it's fun to find them.

[cayugabirds-l] Grasshopper Sparrow, Cornell Community Gardens

2016-10-03 Thread Mark Chao
This morning Becky Hansen found and took an exquisite photo of a
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW in the Cornell Community Gardens on Freese Road.
Congratulations, Becky!

Sapsucker Woods has continued to host a lot of migrants over the past few
days, including many slightly-late warbler species plus expected
Blue-headed Vireos, kinglets, and others. I’ve seen Swainson’s Thrushes
four or five times in the past few weeks, and twice in the past three days,
in the buckthorn over the trail between the Sherwood Platform and the small
footbridge on the Wilson Trail North. See eBird for more details from many
birders (go to “Explore a Region” and enter Tompkins County, or “Explore a
Hotspot”).

2013-06-12 Thread Jay McGowan
After a few tries this past week, Livia and I finally found the GRASSHOPPER
SPARROW others have reported (although perhaps not posted here?) at the
Ithaca Airport recently. Today it was singing a field south of Snyder Road
maybe 100m east of the first gate/pulloff area south of the Snyder-Cherry
intersection. (In other words, here: 42.497289,-76.461092). It sang for a
few minutes, then dropped down into the grass and disappeared.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Grasshopper Sparrow v. mowing near airport

2012-06-02 Thread Meena Haribal
I think it is great idea Dave! We should convince airport authority about
mowing! Once upon a time (it feels like long ago, but about 10 years ago) there
used to be many Grasshopper Sparrows in the area now called with fancy road
names such as Triphammer Terrace, Placid Terrace, Aspen Way etc. used to be
nice grassland, before the mega houses moved in. Even now they have lot of lawn
area, only if it was intact grassland instead of lawn probably Grasshopper
sparrows might have managed to live with humans! I have not been in that area
in some years now. Would be curious to see how they are morphed in last few
years.

I wonder can we convince the Tompkins County Airport, which owns the field on
the southwest corner of Warren and Cherry not to mow that field until July.
Would that be late enough for the Grasshopper Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow and
Eastern Meadowlark which were singing there today to finish breeding? Would the
Lab of O be willing to support this? Would the Cayuga Bird Club support this? I
don't think the field is used for hay, so there shouldn't be an economic or

[cayugabirds-l] Grasshopper Sparrow - Yates County photos

When I heard Bobolinks, Eastern Meadowlarks and Savannah Sparrows this morning

Grasshopper Sparrows and soon I found one. There may even be more than one
spot on Johnson Road for the GRSP. It took me a long time to finally see the
meadowlark. I saw a Bobolink caring food.
The photos were cropped; I don’t own a great camera and I couldn’t digiscope
this one.

[cayugabirds-l] Grasshopper Sparrow in Danby, Cerulean Warbler near Belle Sherman

2010-06-08 Thread Eric Banford
Yesterday morning I stepped outside to check the weather and the first thing I
heard was a tick tick BZZZ. Psyched, my second Grasshopper Sparrow ever.
I put on my muck boots and grabbed my bins and was able to watch him sing from
a bush for a few minutes.

Other breeders singing at the time: Willow Flycatcher, Great Crested
Flycatcher, Blue Jay, American Crow, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Black-capped
Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Wood Thrush, Blue-winged Warbler, Common
Yellowthroat, Savannah Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Dark-eyed
Junco, Northern Cardinal, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Bobolink (lots), Red-winged
Blackbird, Eastern Meadowlark, Baltimore Oriole, American Goldfinch

This morning I parked off the edge of Cornell campus, and as I started walking
I heard an interesting, rising warbler song. Four slower, steady notes,
followed by three quick ones and then a held bu at the end. This great page
on All About Birds made it easy for me to go through potential songsters and
figure out it was a Cerulean Warbler:

Hi Eric,

It's great to hear that Grasshopper Sparrows are still possible in
Danby. Throughout the Ithaca June Count years, and up until about
2000, we used to find them in what could be called the greater Jersey
Hill area (Town of Danby, west of Comfort Road). I particularly
remember locations along the west side of Townline Road a few
thousand feet south of Blakesly Hill, also east of the FLT between
there and Bruce Hill Road, and in the highland fields where Hilltop
Road, Bruce Hill Road, Jersey Hill Road and Gunderman Road come
together. I wonder if anybody has looked for Grasshopper Sparrows in
that area lately?

RE: Re:[cayugabirds-l] Grasshopper Sparrow in Danby and new thread ORCAHRD ORIOLE at Freese Raod gardens

2010-06-08 Thread Meena Haribal
Geo and all,
I did recently drove around slowly along some of the locations you mention
including Eric's recently but have not been successful. I do remember the
Grasshoppers sparrows and Bobolinks on Nelson road.
Today after dropping off my brother and family at Pyramid mall for shopping, I
worked on my Freese Road garden for couple of hours and most of the time I
worked, an ORCHARD ORIOLE sang from the grove in front of garden parking lot
entrance. Initially I ignored it thinking that it was a Purple Finch, but then
realised that it sounded like my mail alert. So I left the work halfway to
check out. I found a young male singing his heart out to attract a female.
While eh was singing the Baltimore Oriole kept reminding me that my feet are
still dirty or sometimes my feet are silvery. He has been singing this
phrase over more than four years now.

Yesterday on the way back from Canada, I stopped at Montezuma to look for the
HUGO. But was not lucky to see him. But I did see a Pergrine from the deck of
Skylon restaurant.

Cheers
