Actually they came in last week as reported by the residents at Hile school rd and Red Mill.  Assuming same rookery. Maybe 14-15 th. I haven’t seen any foragers at the HS Wetland yet. There is a wonderful little beaver pond withAnother 8-10 nests back along the old railroad that starts by the bridge at Malloryville. He said they were back there also. AnneSent from my iPhoneOn Mar 21, 2023, at 8:08 PM, Andrew David Miller wrote:

[cayugabirds-l] Great Blue Heron Rookery

2019-03-20 Thread Andrew David Miller
The great blue heron rookery in Malloryville, between Red Mill Rd. and West
Malloryville Rd and best viewed from Fall Creek Rd., has been repopulated by
returning great blue herons over the last few days. My daughters and I counted
seven there late this afternoon, all occupying different nests and
intermittently chasing one another. That number is similar to what have nested
there the last few years so I don't except numbers to get much higher.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Great Blue Heron - Upper Buttermilk

2016-12-15 Thread Peter

Larry and all.

I, too, spotted a Great Blue during our weekly raptor survey at the
Montezuma NWR yesterday. I asked it if it wanted to borrow my compass,
but it politely said no, it had learned how to both orient AND navigate
a few seasons back. (smile)

It WAS a pleasure to see one at this late date.

Happy Holidays to each of you!!

[cayugabirds-l] Great Blue Heron breakfast

2014-07-17 Thread Judith Thurber
While checking Bluebird boxes on a golf course that runs next to a small
stream, I saw a Great Blue standing with something dark hanging from its mouth
that caught my eye. The Heron was shaking a rodent. It would put it on the
ground and pick it up to shake it again. He repeated this about 10 times
before swallowing the critter. Quite a large mouse or vole I would guess. I
was at quite a distance.

Sadly in one box, I had one dead bluebird young with two others alive and
hopefully well. I was glad for them to be able to remove their sibling, as the
odor -- although I guess they don't have much sense of smell -- was memorable.

It's nearly time for Cardinal Flower blooms, and I hope to see some along the
banks of the golf course stream as in past years, but the stream was dredged up
last year with the soil piled high along the banks and the plants may not have
fared so well with the massive upheaval.
