Last year on March 22 I photographed killdeer for the first time in 2022. 
Today, I have once again on March 22 seen them for the first time in 2023! I 
have seen about 8 of them calling overhead and in the farm fields in the 
Skaneateles and Marcellus area. Between their alarm calls, the singing Song 
Sparrows and Robins, and one Belted Kingfisher near my house making its 
distinct sounds it feels very hopeful for the spring birding season.

FOY pair of killdeer in my pasture on Sheffield Road today.

Crow was very busy today carrying twigs and working to break twigs off of 
bushes. I only saw one at a time. Again, Sheffield Road.

[cayugabirds-l] Killdeer

While scanning the banks of Salmon Creek this afternoon we spotted two
Killdeer on the Salt Point side of the estuary in Myers Park in Lansing. As
usual there were plenty of Ring-billed Gulls and four Great or Lesser
Black-backed Gulls.

evening or early this morning. There were 3 chicks running around with the 
parents today.

After several years absence, a pair of killdeer are nesting in my sand riding 
ring again. I haven't tried to spot the eggs but one is sitting in the same 
spot for hours on end and this morning did the injured bird routine when my dog 
and I got too close.

They used to nest in the riding ring, then moved across the road to the edge of 
the neighbors gravel driveway.

How long do they take to hatch?

Grackles, too. Bluebirds singing in the background. A Robin is quietly
perched at the top of a tall Maple. Life is good!

This afternoon at about 3:30 we saw and heard at least two killdeer in the
field on Hopkins Rd near Hayts Rd, FOY for us.  Lots of red winged
blackbirds were calling also.

Don't remember this having been reported at or since the CBC, but there's a 
killdeer in the gravel island of salmon creek by Myers - or there was until the 
hunters started firing nearby. I don't see it anymore, but can hear it calling 
from nearby somewhere.

Also, lots of bluebirds near the salt point entrance.

to Bird Behavior, vol. 2.The original Saunders source is Saunders, Aretas 
Andrews, The Summer Birds of Central New York Marshes  Roosevelt Wild Life 
Bulletin. vol. 3 , pp. 335-475.  1926Also A. C. Bent's Life Histories of North 
American Shorebirds part two.  Originally from the Smithsonian in 1927, Dover 
Publications did a reprint in 1962.

leave before seeing the end of this display, but my curiosity was piqued.

I came home and checked on Birds of North America for more information, and 
found nothing except a small reference to the 1967 paper Prenuptial courtship 
in wintering shorebirds by J.B. Funderburg.  Google searching this paper lead 
me to a website describing the ground courtship displays of Killdeer.  I find 
it quite interesting, so I thought I'd share it with you all!

Found on the website birdsbybent.com.  A 1929 bulletin - 146 (part 2: 202-217) 
- written by Arthur Cleveland Bent for the Smithsonian National Museum.

The most noticeable courtship performances of the killdeer are those that take 
place in the air--the nuptial flight--but those that occur on the ground, 
although less often seen, are also spectacular. Aretas Saunders (1926) thus 
describes the display: Two birds would crouch side by side but facing in 
opposite directions. Then they would droop the tips of the wings so that they 
exposed the ochraceous patch of the lower back, spread the tail, and tip the 
breast forward, slowly lifting the wing tips till the came way above the back, 
but never covered it from view. All the while they kept up a continual call, 
the long-trilled note 't-r-r-r-r-r.' The displaying birds would often begin 
the performance or end it with a little fighting.

Try as I might, I couldn't find the original Saunders source.  Have any of you 
witnessed this behavior before?

Hi Lauren,
As Marie noted sometimes this behavior is by small groups. I 
watched a group of four Killdeer doing this display on a visit to Myer’s 
several years ago. It was the most unusual thing to see these birds do what 
amounted to a Killdeer version of a square dance calling like crazy. Very 
competitive for them probably and amazing for me.
Killdeer are really starting to peak now. I had 11 birds at one 
stationary count last night and I seem to hear them at every stop. Thanks for 
posting your observation and reminding me of the thrill I had seeing this 
behavior.

This morning at Myers Point, the group I was with observed two Killdeer 
engaging in what we assumed was a courtship ritual.  They stood on the log at 
the end of the gravel parking lot, back to back, with tails raised high, and 
backed into each other until tails were close to touching.  They then began 
imitating each other, with flicks and dips.  The whole time they were calling 
constantly, so that it sounds like one continuous trill.  No one in our group 
had ever seen the likes of it before, or heard of it.  Unfortunately we had to 
leave before seeing the end of this display, but my curiosity was piqued.

I came home and checked on Birds of North America for more information, and 
found nothing except a small reference to the 1967 paper Prenuptial courtship 
in wintering shorebirds by J.B. Funderburg.  Google searching this paper lead 
me to a website describing the ground courtship displays of Killdeer.  I find 
it quite interesting, so I thought I'd share it with you all!

Found on the website birdsbybent.com.  A 1929 bulletin - 146 (part 2: 202-217) 
- written by Arthur Cleveland Bent for the Smithsonian National Museum.

The most noticeable courtship performances of the killdeer are those that take 
place in the air--the nuptial flight--but those that occur on the ground, 
although less often seen, are also spectacular. Aretas Saunders (1926) thus 
describes the display: Two birds would crouch side by side but facing in 
opposite directions. Then they would droop the tips of the wings so that they 
exposed the ochraceous patch of the lower back, spread the tail, and tip the 
breast forward, slowly lifting the wing tips till the came way above the back, 
but never covered it from view. All the while they kept up a continual call, 
the long-trilled note 't-r-r-r-r-r.' The displaying birds would often begin 
the performance or end it with a little fighting.

Try as I might, I couldn't find the original Saunders source.  Have any of you 
witnessed this behavior before?

Killdeer must have been on the move. I saw 11 Killdeer in half a mile 
along flooded fields on Flatiron Rd., Caroline just before it turned 
bitter cold with snow. I wonder how many survived.

Three killdeer together on an icy peninsula in flooded Campbell Meadow (corner 
Pinckney/Lower Creek). Turned back to look and there was only one.  He remained 
for at least the hour I watched. Kept bobbing body up and down, then fluttering 
both wings. Only other movement was to duck behind a small pile of snow as a 
sharp-shinned hawk flew down over him. Colleen Richards

On my walk back from the lake late this afternoon I saw a single KILLDEER silently foraging in the northeasternmost soccer field of Cass Park. Nearby an EASTERN BLUEBIRD sang. At the south end of the park atop a high-voltage power pole, a/the RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD sat and occasionally sang. There's no turning back now! Well, actually they'll all be screwed by Thursday and wish they'd turned back, but that's springtime in Ithaca. Enjoy what you can when you can!From NYS-89 in the Town of Ithaca I could see that the lake still has at least one RED-NECKED GREBE, several RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 17 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 26 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, and at least a dozen other species of waterfowl. The ice held one immature BALD EAGLE, one LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, three GLAUCOUS GULLS each in a distinct plumage and visible simultaneously, and the other usual 3 species of gulls. --Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] killdeer nest

I walked by the killdeer nest Suan mentions, later in the morning yesterday, 
and saw how vulnerable it was to the softball players who kept running over the 
culvert to collect wayward balls. Along with a couple friends I was with, we 
did a bit of cordoning off of the nest area with rocks and sticks. I wonder if 
it can be officially roped off, though, and would appreciate any tips from 
anyone on whom to contact to ask about this. Thanks,

 My addition to the hawthorn reports is a (the?) yellow-throated vireo which 
 sang from a tall tree across the recway from the SW entrance, flying a couple 
 times but not staying put long enough to get my binoculars on it before 
 flying off.
 
 Also a green heron calling from the small pond.
 
 I saw a BW warbler foraging quietly and close at three locations in 
 succession: couldn't tell if it was the same bird following me (maybe it was 
 attracted to my shiny orange jacket :-).
 
 I left just as a softball game was starting, with one of the teams warming up 
 on the culvert with the killdeer nest (four eggs today). The birds were going 
 crazy, and the players had no clue. Incredibly camouflaged are those eggs.

Running near a playground yesterday out in Danby, we accidentally came too
close to an invisible killdeer nest and the parent flushed giving us a
momentary glimpse into a small pile of woodchips with a single green-ish
colored egg with brown spots. The relatively large size of the egg
surprised me compared to the size of the bird. We quickly left the area of
course.

[cayugabirds-l] Killdeer pipits

This afternoon I checked the recently disked fields at the Cornell Organic
Field Trials on Ed Hill Rd. in Freeville.  I was looking for AMER PIPITS of
which there were about 20.  I counted 87 KILLDEER resting there.  Looks like
a good area for plovers too.

A quick lunchtime trip to the Cornell compost facility on Stevenson Rd turned 
up a KILLDEER (seen and heard) between the piles and a 3rd cycle LESSER 
BLACK-BACKED GULL.  Several FISH CROWS around as well.

Around 1300, over Brooktondale, in a period of 10 minutes, about 30 KILLDEER
flew by the house low.  They moved from NW to SE, straight-line flight.
There was a group of 10, some smaller groups, and some singles.  All the
singles called, and in the groups, only one bird of the group called.  The
calls were very evenly spaced, almost like a mechanical recording.  Most
likely contact calls.  I wonder if the members of a group share who calls
and who rests.  Is this common in other shorebirds?

Weather:  low clouds and some drizzle, but pretty good visibility.
