[cayugabirds-l] Louisiana Waterthrush

2023-04-25 Thread Colleen Richards
Sorry for the late posting. Just read Pete Saracino's post which reminded me of
the also talkative Louisiana Waterthrush we heard at the base of Taughannock
Falls around 11:30 this morning. With echoes and loud falls noises it was
impossible to get bearings for a sighting, but he sure let us know he was
there! On the way back out of the gorge also spotted one of the peregrines as
it dropped down from the nesting ledge and flew downstream. Colleen Richards

Louisiana Waterthrush is back singing at Six Mile Creek upstream of second
reservoir this morning. I didn't walk the trails the last two days so don't
know if they'd been back, though yesterday's evening walk did not hear any.
Winter wren continues singing in its traditional territory.

“My” six-mile-creek Louisiana Waterthrush is also back this afternoon, not
singing like I was listening for, but calling its sharp chip calls as it
surveyed its turf up back and forth along the creek before landing fairly close
on a tree for good ID-confirming views of its tail-pumping gray-and-white

[cayugabirds-l] Louisiana waterthrush

2017-04-24 Thread Janet McGraw
Late this morning at Chittenango Falls I spotted a Louisiana waterthrush. We
were on the bridge at the base of the falls when the thrush flew into a low
tree to the left of the bridge. We got really good looks at the thrush as it
bobbed its tail constantly while in the tree. It then flew to the waters edge
to the right of the bridge and began foraging.

[cayugabirds-l] Louisiana Waterthrush

2014-04-11 Thread W. Larry Hymes
This evening Sara Jane and I took a walk in Upper Buttermilk. As we
approached the outflow for Lake Treman, we were wonderfully surprised to
hear a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH singing. After soaking up the bird's
beautiful sounds, we continued up to the lake, where we found a pair of
COMMON MERGANSER and a BELTED KINGFISHER. The waterthrush sang pretty
much continuously, and as we rounded the bend below the upper lot and
started back, we could still hear it singing. What a great way to greet
the change of seasons!

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Louisiana Waterthrush

2010-04-23 Thread Meena Haribal
About three or four years ago I found similar differences in songs of Northern
Waterthrushes. All in the same location, that is Sapsucker Woods on the Dryden
side of the trails.

Initially, I distinguished them by sound, then I recorded them and looked at
the sonograms. I was surprised that my ears, which in the previous years could
not distinguish between Northern Lousiana, but now could tell the difference
between the individual Northerns was amazing to me. Definitely listening to
more individuals helps!

I am aware of the following locations and would like to hear of any
others.
