[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings, Horned Larks

2015-01-29 Thread Marie P. Read
The roadsides along Mt Pleasant Rd have been plowed far back exposing some bare
ground and these opened up areas have attracted a lot of Snow Buntings and
Horned Larks (more of the latter than I've seen together all winter up here) to
feed today. Given these close views, it is worth checking the flocks for
longspurs, before the snow drifts over to cover up the bare ground again. (I
didn't see any though...)

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings, Horned Larks

2015-01-13 Thread Marie P. Read
After stubbornly refusing to show up for the Christmas Bird Count, Snow
Buntings are again on Mt Pleasant. A mixed flock of Horned Larks (about 12) and
Snow Buntings (at least twice as many) were on the road at the easternmost end
of Mt Pleasant Rd when I was just walking up there earlier this morning.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings/Horned Larks

2013-02-07 Thread Marie P Read
Up on the hill for my exercise walk this morning between 10:45 and 11:45, I saw
a flock of 20-ish Snow Buntings at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd. And at
three different spots between there and the observatory I found individual
Horned Larks, most likely the vanguard of those that typically show up in
mid-February to take possession of small patches of open ground and start their
flight songs on high, gearing up for breeding. I have a feeling that, come
tomorrow, they may regret their decision to get here early!
