[cayugabirds-l] N. Shrike on Vineyard Rd, Romulus

2017-12-16 Thread Marty Schlabach
Yesterday, midday, Mary Jean and I saw a Norther Shrike along Vineyard Road in
Romulus. It was essentially across the road from the rear entrance to the
Seneca Produce Auction, at the top of a tree right near the road.

1130. Just noted an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE perched in a treetop in a
hedgerow along the field across from my house. How's that for a sentence?
It's December; right on time. Beautiful in the softly falling snow.

[cayugabirds-l] N. Shrike in Danby again

2013-02-26 Thread Dan Kathy C
The N. Shrike I reported being in my yard last week showed up a short
distance from my house on Comfort Road this afternoon. It was actively
hunting in the fields on the west side of Comfort Road about ¼ mile south of
W. Miller Road. Old bluebird houses made an excellent vantage point for it.

[cayugabirds-l] N Shrike at Lab of O Woods feeders

2013-01-07 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
Yes, back to the birds (sorry for perpetuating a thread folks were tired of...
but correct information is our most powerful tool)

Yet another NORTHERN SHRIKE appeared briefly at the Lab of Ornithology's north
feeders just before noon today -- possibly nabbing a bird and disappearing into
a dense conifer, and then chasing a flock of finches over the Lab building to
the south.

Also a few PINE SISKINS and at least 1 COMMON REDPOLL in the area -- probably
more at the Lab's main feeder garden out front.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] N SHRIKE along Turkey Hill

2011-12-14 Thread Jay McGowan
Brad Walker and I stopped by Turkey Hill Road on our way to work this
morning and refound Jeff's NORTHERN SHRIKE. It was sitting in the
hedgerow along the east side of Turkey Hill Road just north of the big
barn at the intersection with Stevenson Road, then flew east to perch
on the fence post along the north side of the barn. It was an adult,
perhaps the same one that was hanging out in this area a month ago
(although my impression was this one wasn't quite as pale.)

Photo here:
https://picasaweb.google.com/37855303614931880/Winter20112012#5685999476524348802

We also walked at Hammond Hill earlier in the morning, where the only
birds of note were a flock of eight PURPLE FINCHES.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] N SHRIKE along Turkey Hill - still

2011-12-14 Thread Marie P Read
The Northern Shrike was making the rounds of the field north of the barn where
Jeff saw it and Jay relocated it, between 10:30 and about 12:30 when it flew
south into the middle of the field complex and I lost it. It foraged
successfully numerous times, capturing what looked to be large caterpillars on
the ground.

Great bird. Thanks to Jeff and Jay for the heads-up.
