Thanks Alicia Plotkin for pointing this out: in spite of the fact that the female Barred Owl is larger than the male, the call of the male IS pitched lower than the female. So, from what I recall, it was the male that came in first to our playback followed a short time later by the female. It makes sense that the male would have the primary role in driving away intruders.
