[cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull, Stewart Park
Hi all, A 1st cycle THAYER'S GULL found by Tim Lenz yesterday morning was still present in the gull flock off the west end of Stewart Park yesterday evening, along with three Kumlien's Iceland Gulls and at least 19 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. The evening gull flock on the lake has been interesting this week, with increasing Lesser Black-backed numbers. Here is last night's checklist, with a few photos: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S43490860 -- Jay McGowan Macaulay Library Cornell Lab of Ornithology jw...@cornell.edu -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull at compost piles this morning
Gull numbers have sure dropped over the last week, but a Thayer's Gull was a nice reward for venturing in on a rainy day. Looks like the same bird that Ian found earlier. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S28598494 Jeff -- Jeff Gerbracht Lead Application Developer Neotropical Birds, Breeding Bird Atlas, eBird Cornell Lab of Ornithology 607-254-2117 -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re:[cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull, Stevenson Rd.
All, The juvenile THAYER'S GULL continues at the compost piles off Stevenson Road, Town of Dryden this morning, along with the single Glaucous, Iceland, Lesser Black-backed, and Herring x Great Black-backed gulls. Activity was low initially with most of the birds up on the hill, probably due to an observer out of his car with a scope set up along the west edge. As soon as he left, birds started to come back down to the piles and it wasn't long before feeding was back to its normal frenzied state. This is a good reminder to issue a reminder: STAY IN YOUR CAR AT THE COMPOST. If you feel the need to set up a tripod, you can do it from several vantages along Stevenson Road, which may offer a better look at loafing birds on the hills. If you want to go in the facility, make sure to stay in your car and keep your car well out of the way of any machinery moving compost and trucks that periodically arrive delivering food scraps. Also, while the surface of the road along the west side is currently okay, especially early on cold mornings, this could deteriorate rapidly, so enter at your own risk and don't proceed if it looks too muddy. Once snow falls, this road can be even more hazardous. I just came from the compost piles w/probable Thayer’s Gull. Jay and I viewed it from Stevenson Road (work going on at the piles). The bird was last seen on the hillside east of the piles - no need to think about driving in. Tim/Brad - why Thayer’s and not Iceland? Re: [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull at compost piles per Tim Lenz
Hi everyone, In addition to the 1st cycle Thayer's, there was an adult Iceland Gull at the compost piles this afternoon. Both took off for the lake at 3:45. In the field, the two stood next to each for size and structure comparison. The more Herring Gull-like robustness is nicely seen in photos posted to eBird from Jay and Tim (links at end). I had somewhat distant looks at both in the scope, and was not seeing very strong contrast on the primaries (again distance), secondary bar, and tail, and was expressing these concerns to others in the field. However the photos hint at a much stronger Thayer's candidate. (The) adult Iceland was seen at Stewart Park around 4pm, on the ice in the southeast corner. Tufted Duck was not thoroughly searched for, so no update on that one. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S21436467 http://ebird.org/ebird/alert/summary?sid=SN35084 Brendan Fogarty On Tuesday, January 20, 2015 1:33 PM, bob mcguire bmcgu...@clarityconnect.com wrote: I just came from the compost piles w/probable Thayer’s Gull. [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull, Myers Point
The Cayuga Bird Club trip and I had a probable 1st cycle THAYER'S GULL on the spit at Myers Point a little while ago. Pale gray overall, darkish wingtips with frosty edges, petite build. Photos and discussion to follow, but worth taking a look at if you're in the area. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull
Yes, what could be a better way to spend a sunny December Saturday than sorting through immature gulls on piles of steaming garbage. The THAYER'S was surprisingly easy to pick out and keep track of, thanks to the excellent photos posted by Chris Wood on eBird that formed our search image. After other folks left, I picked out an interesting second-cycle KUMLEIN'S ICELAND GULL very close to the Thayer's. Scoping the choppy lake in icy north wind for a wayward grebe was not nearly as fun. Plenty of coots and Bufflehead to hang out, but I guess they didn't rate. As the Christmas Bird Counr approaches, lingering species such as 2 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, 2 RUDDY DUCKS, and a female Am WIGEON become more interesting. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull - Stevenson Rd. compost piles (Dryden)
The Thayer's Gull was still there when I left about 1:05. Thanks, Tom, for posting. We miss you and look forward to your return to the Basin. I was able to get a few photos that you can see in my eBird checklist at the link below. This is a fairly normal-looking juvenile Thayer's Gull (to the extent such a thing exists). I suspect it would be easier to pass this off as a Herring Gull than an Iceland Gull. When scanning through 1st-year Herring Gulls, look for the paler upperparts and note that the primaries on this bird are dark brown, not black as in Herring Gull. It's a bit more obvious in flight when the paler underwing stands out, as does the distinctive upperwing pattern. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9303125 See this story for information on how to embed photos in an eBird checklist: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/embed-photos-in-your-checklists Best wishes, Chris Wood eBird Neotropical Birds Project Leader Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ithaca, New York http://ebird.org http://neotropical.birds.cornell.edu On Fri, Dec 9, 2011 at 12:54 PM, Tom Johnson t...@cornell.edu wrote: Cayugabirders, Chris Wood reports a juvenile Thayer's Gull at the compost piles on Stevenson Rd., Dryden.
