And one can get a large, oval solid rash that is not like a bull's eye one with separate rings, and still be free of Lyme Disease! Last year I had a tick embedded in my neck/collarbone area and it made such a rash (solid red, no rings); later blood testing and lack of symptoms showed no Lyme Disease (luckily). However, sometimes it still itches there. Even though we all took precautions, I just came back from the SFO Cape May, NJ trip with a small reddish tick embedded in the small of my back. Did not look like a Deer Tick, but I am keeping an eye on the area (with a mirror). Found and removed within 24 hours of embedding, I think, so it would not have had time to disgorge its intestinal contents. Yuck. However, I have not seen many ticks around Lansing area since our winter summer weather a few months ago. Maybe the later extreme cold killed off that first bunch? But they will be back. Seems that there are drs. who tend to pooh-pooh the whole idea but besides our son, we have a friend in NH, heart of tick country, who has been through severe medical crises since having Lyme twice. My friend who has battled Lyme for years said that his tests came back negative. There are different strains of Lyme in different parts of the country and each Lab only tests for their local strains. Nobody runs a test for all the flavors of Lyme. My doctor looked at my rash, prescribed the antibiotic, and said there was no point in doing a Lyme test, as it would come back negative, being un-useful for the just-bitten. Here is what the New York State Health Department says about deer tick bites: Although not routinely recommended, taking antibiotics within three days after a tick bite may be beneficial for some persons. This would apply to deer tick bites that occurred in areas where Lyme disease is common and there is evidence that the tick fed for more than one day. In cases like this you should discuss the possibilities with your doctor or health care provider. Guess I'm finally motivated to start wearing my Tick and Chigger Gaitors that I bought last fall, from a posting (can't remember for sure if it was cayugabirds) about a forestry supply site that sells them. They are made by NiteLite Outdoor Gear, I think they were around $10 for a pair. They're about 8 high and elastic, keeping the pants snug against the boot tops. I would also note to check your clothing too. Last year in the Saratoga area I was out hiking and my skin was free of them, but overnight I found two ticks firmly ensconced on my neck and chest. I can only presume they got on my bed because I had lain my hiking pants there for a while after the hike. [cayugabirds-l] Ticks
On a very short walk through woods behind my house, I picked up two wood ticks and two deer ticks today. I walk this particular trail at least once a week and have never picked up any ticks on it--or at least not that I have seen. The two deer ticks would have gone unseen today if the two wood ticks hadn't alerted me to the need to look more closely at little black specs. Apparently ticks are out in force, and appropriate precautions should be taken. Anne Marie Johnson Caroline P.S. [cayugabirds-l] ticks are out!
Unfortunately, with spring, comes TICKS. Even before the snow melted 2 weeks ago, I pulled 4 engorged ticks off my Golden Retriever. Then this last week, I pulled one off ME ! It was probably a dog tick, but I went to the Dr. for Doxycycline , just in case. There are a lot of ticks in the Lansing Station Rd. area; don't know if this it true elsewhere, but be aware of the possibility of picking up ticks when you go off into the bushes and woods. I think the dog and I get them both in our yard and up in the woods nearby, since neither of us sticks to paths. Donna L.
