[cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Ospreys
This a.m. I noticed our NYSEG ospreys on Number one Rd. are back. One was on the nest & the other on the perch pole. I suspect they have been back a few days but I hadn't been able to walk up the hill to check. Becky had checked the nest on Fri. evening & saw nothing but it may have been too dark. Always thrilling to have them fly over the yard. Several days ago I saw a crow carrying a stick to a large, nearby, spruce tree. Our family of 5 crows have split up & now, as usual, we have three always together. This has been going on for at least 15 yrs. Not much activity out on the lake from Frontenac Park or at the ponds. The large rafts of ducks are gone. Becky was pleased to have Marie Read as a customer at Surefine this a.m.. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Ospreys
Yesterday morning I found a just-fledged Osprey roadkill on Spring St about a quarter mile west of where I'd been wa This morning about 930 there were 5 Ospreys circling high above the nest site on Center/No.1 Rd, and a not-particularly-welcome Red-tailed Hawk. The youngsters were characteristically shrieking as they soared. Made a brief visit to Seneca Meadows WP with 5 teens and saw 9 nests and 25 Ospreys. Lots of Bobolinks in varying plumages, and a young meadowlark just beginning to show signs of its black chevron. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs Ospreys
I'm guessing at least one of our Ospreys has fledged. I didn't have time to drive over to the nest site on Center Rd, but about 11:00 today I was heading home on Spring St when I saw 3 Ospreys over the field on the noth side of the road as I was reaching the crest. One landed on the ground and proceeded to shriek periodically as the others flew off, presumably to the lake to fish. There were also 2 Red-tailed Hawk slowly circling over the same field but much higher. [cayugabirds-l] Union Springs OSPREYS
I just observed 'our' OSPREY on the Center St/Number One Rd. nest at the NYSEG sub-station about 1/2 mile east of the Union Springs Post Office on Rte. 90. The nest is now so deep that it is almost impossible to detect a bird on it. I watched (at 10:20) until a bird stood up so I could see it (her, I assume). We are able to see them quite well with our old 7-14 X zoom binocs from our back yard hilltop location about 1/3 mile north of the nest. John reporting today - - - Fritzie is on her way with Kathy Strickland for a week in Texas to visit their old birding mentor & friend Helen Clayburn, formerly of Union Springs, hoping to do some Texas birding, which Kathy can report via her laptop. Re: [cayugabirds-l] UNION SPRINGS OSPREYS
Hi, Tonight, I saw a lone Great White Egret at Marcellus Knox. The Osprey pair whose nest was removed on Rt 89, were looking quite confused and a bit sad as they tried to figure out what happened to their platform. There was another pair on Rt. 20 and a single on another nest near by. I waited for SEO on Van Dyne Spoor until 7: 10 with no luck. There were on sign of the Eagle at the lock at twilight unless one was deep in the nest. [cayugabirds-l] UNION SPRINGS OSPREYS
At 10:45 this A.M., John & I observed the Union Springs Center St. Extension, Number One Road OSPREYS copulating atop the pole attached to the side of the nest platform. This is the first time we have even seen the birds at the platform this spring. No new building sticks were observed when I was there Mon.. This nest site is out across the field in back of our house & easy to keep track of. The tree swallows are scrapping with each other around a birdbox & a bluebird was hanging onto the front of another birdbox while a house sparrow was trying to chase it away. I must remember to stop at the south edge of Cayuga & buy several more birdboxes displayed on a stand which are made by the Cayuga bluebird enthusiast, Doug Carter, who also makes up kits for kids to assemble at the Audubon Center & other places. I wonder how many boxes he has made. LOTS!! If you hungry birders like fish I saw a sign saying that Doug's Fish Fry will have their rolling equipment at Half Acre from 11 to 7 tomorrow, a one day affair. That's at the corner of Rte. 326 & W. Genesee St. between Cayuga & Auburn, north of Union Springs about 6 mi..
