: Union Springs, NY 21 March 2018 Once again we are/were in awe of the tremendous numbers of Snows overhead. This afternoon I took John for a short ride about 3 mi. east of the Springs. We noticed MANY dozens of Snow geese_decoys_ in a field near Davis Rd. & Powers Rd. where it intersects with Rte. 326. Never have I seen any live Snow geese near decoys. They're too smart! Continuing east on Powers I saw a few Snows landing in a nearby field so I turned around so we could watch the geese coming from the west. Thousands of Snows were coming to the field ... BUT flying over & ignoring the decoys, a mi. back towards the lake. As far as we could see to the west, north & south ... were great flocks of Snows coming, many eventually flying right over US & landing in the field less than 1/8 mi. from us. Soon the field was white .... WHITE!! And the noise ... !!!! Back towards Union Springs, coming home on Spring St. we saw the MUCH smaller, insignificant flocks of 3 to 20 Canada geese coming towards us to join some other Canadas in a field 1/2 mi. from home. When we moved here in 1971, we only saw about 75-100 Snows but often saw the sky almost black with flocks of Canadas, almost the way we're seeing Snows now. Quite obviously, a dramatic change has occurred over the yrs. & not for the good, despite the beauty of the Snows. Would that all could get to see & be thrilled by the sights & sounds of countless thousands of Snow geese before they head north. They usually are expected to be on their nesting grounds in the Arctic about 5 May.
