[cayugabirds-l] Willow Ptarmigan retraction
I just found out the Willow Ptarmigan was seen in VT before the last NY sighting, meaning there were at least two birds far away from their normal range. It is sad to hear that the NY bird was found dead, does anyone know the details/cause? While I was on Point Peninsula for several hours on 4/30, I met a few of the residents. Most were friendly and welcoming to the birders, but I did hear a couple negative comments, and since I work along a camp access road, I know that some of the homeowners value the peace and quiet that normally exists. I wrote to Jeff Bolsinger about the Willow Ptarmigan's death, and below is his reply. --Dave Nutter On May 25, 2014, at 05:34 AM, Jeff Bolsinger jsbolsin...@yahoo.com wrote: The ptarmigan is going to be sent to the American Museum of Natural History, where I assume that they will look into how it died. [cayugabirds-l] Willow Ptarmigan in VT
Just FYI, a willow ptarmigan was seen in VT a couple days after the last sighting in NY. From photos posted, it appears to look the same as the one on point peninsula (white phase). I’m not sure about the reports from Canton of the bird being found dead, it may have been to discourage people from invading point peninsula. (I know there was a lot of negative feelings from some of the locals about all the crowds that showed up - myself included). [cayugabirds-l] Willow Ptarmigan
I last saw the Willow Ptarmigan at 1 PM along South Shore Extension (a 1/2 mile long dead end off S. Shore Rd). It was on the beach side of the road about 1/2 way down towards the end. It had moved down the road from it’s earlier position. Best way to get there is to take rte. 57 to South Shore Rd, follow that down the west side of the peninsula. Where the road makes a left turn, the S. Shore Extension turns right. Please use care parking walking, that is all private property. Photos available on facebook (go to the Eaton Birding Society facebook page). Also had Savannah Sparrow, E. Meadowlarks, Am Kestrels, Rough-legged hawk, red-tails, and a snowy owl in the area.
