[cayugabirds-l] Wood ducks, kestrel

2020-04-09 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Pair of elegant Wood ducks, along with a few Green winged Teal, pr. Gadwall, &
pr. Mallard well back in swamp on Armitage Rd. across bridge coming from rt 89.

Then a Kestrel just past farm on corner of Armitage & Rt. 89. IT flew off wire
into sun, so no gender ID.

[cayugabirds-l] Wood Ducks

2018-03-01 Thread Geo Kloppel
This morning at 6:15 a couple of Wood Ducks short-hopped over the ridge behind
the West Danby Fire Station to visit my pond. They were about to hit the water,
but aborted at the last moment when they spotted me.

Turkeys are gobbling. We could see a foot of snow in the next 48 hours.

West Danby is socked-in this morning, with a ceiling just a few hundred feet
above the valley floor - a condition that sometimes produces a migrant fallout.

Four Wood Ducks circled my pond just now.

[cayugabirds-l] Wood Ducks and Ticks

2015-04-03 Thread Geo Kloppel
I took a short walk in the mown fields in the central part of the LP
Biodiversity Preserve (West Danby). Ponds are just beginning to open down
there, and Wood Ducks were concentrated in the small ice-free areas. I stopped
counting at 16...

Great Blue Herons were standing in a high nest out in the big swamp beyond the
WD Fire Station.

I may go back this evening for Woodcock, though the dogs will have to stay
home: those fields are just silly with ticks already!

[cayugabirds-l] wood ducks

2012-09-06 Thread Bill Mcaneny
Here is something I would bet has been seen by nobody on this list-serve. A
neighbor of mine watched as a brood of baby WOOD DUCKS tumbled from a big
maple tree on my street. The mother headed for a tiny pond nearby and my
neighbor assisted by herding the ducklings in that direction. My neighbor
is 8 years old. I am envious. How about you?

Wow, that is a great story and something that young boy will never ever
forget!!

One of my goals this year is to get a young birders club goingunder
the umbrella of the Cayuga Bird Club. I wonder if your neighbor would be
interested in something like this. and I don't have anything actually
worked out yet. But if anyone knows anyone, let me know. I think the first
step would be to generate a list of interested youngsters.

Thanks Bill, for sharing this with us all. It is a wonderful image to
cling to.

2012-09-06 Thread Linda Orkin
Okay. Time for me to bow my head in shame. A dear friend pointed out to me that
there was no mention of the gender of Bill's neighbor. Sometimes we are slapped
in our own faces by biases that run so deep. As the mother of two women and the
grandma of a little girl I find it so strange that I leaped to this conclusion
about this eight year old child.

Apologies to all the great birders and naturalists out there whether you
started as a little girl or a little boy.
