At 4 PM Friday I went up to the Equine Research Lab to find the Northern Shrike reported by Dave Nutter. It flew into the 'top of a tall tree behind" the lab buildings and showed itself briefly but brightly in the fading sunlight, disappeared and did not reappear in the next 15 minutes. Then, I headed up Scofield Rd. and saw yet another Northern Shrike on the east side of the road opposite the house at 436 Scofield. Whence this plenitude of shirkes? A quirk of sampling due to January enthusiasm?
