[cayugabirds-l] CORRECTION: Horned Grebes not Eared Grebes at Sheldrake Point

2015-03-30 Thread Sandy Wold
Correction, I meant to type HORNED GREBE not Eared Grebe. My first thought
yesterday was Eared Grebe because there appeared to be a bump on the
forehead, but then I had to correct for location as Eared Grebes live on
the West coast. It had a white breast and neck and grey back (still in
winter plumage), grebe-shape, diving like a grebe, smaller than a nearby
Hooded Merganser and close in size to a nearby Bufflehead, dark bill,
definitely did not have the thicker bill of a Pied-billed Grebe. The sun
was setting, and it was getting harder to see.

We went around the point quickly thereafter, and there seemed to be many
more grebe-sized birds around the northernside of the point, many smaller
birds there, maybe bufflehead too...such a contrast to the large Tundra
Swan seen there a few weeks ago.

[cayugabirds-l] correction on Snowy Owls?

2015-02-17 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Today my friends wrote what we all suspected:

Rick went back late this afternoon (to Scofield/Buck Rds.) and saw the owl
again and he feels embarrassed to say, it was a short eared, not a snowy.
Sorry for the confusion. Hope this did not cause a problem.

I told them it was not a problem, good to have the correction, and most
importantly, this is the way we learn birds! It was nice he got to see one of
the Short Eared Owls again and to identify it.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Possible Snowy Owls?

Friends who live on the north end of Scofield Rd., Lansing, where we have all
seen the Short Eared Owls, are fairly sure that Rick saw 2 SNOWY OWLS flying
over the fields on Saturday before the storm. It was late afternoon. I asked
them to compare Snowy Owls with Short Eared Owls.

Their description:
We looked up short eared owls and Rick is 99% sure he saw a snowy. Really
white, with a big wing span. Big freakin owl hunting in the day says Rick.
It was the size of a great horned owl.

Marlaine has taken SFO and says that Rick frequently consults their bird
guides when he sees birds he is not sure about. They are very outdoorsy people
and regularly see a Great Horned Owl in their back yard woods.

[cayugabirds-l] Correction: waterfowl - wyers/sheldrake

On Saturday afternoon, I finally got to take a drive along Wyers Road and
Sheldrake Park in Ovid and test my waterfowl id skills I learned from the
Lab of O on-line class (thanks, Kevin!).

Along the way (near the bb) I saw 5 REDHEADS, about a dozen BUFFLEHEADS, 2
TUNDRA SWANS, 25 GOLDENEYES, 22 RINGNECKED DUCKS, and about 8 COMMON
MERGANSERS. I am certain there were other birds I did not count or see
very well.

The COMMON MERGANSERS were quite actively engaged in courtship display, and
it was fun to watch! They would circle about, stretch their necks upward
pointing their bills to the sky, dip down into the water and then cozy up
to a female while chasing away the competition. There was also much
flapping and splashing about. I couldn't hear if they were vocalizing,
however, from my perch above the cove.

[cayugabirds-l] Correction re 2012 David Cup

2014-01-25 Thread Lee Ann van Leer
One correction is that Chris Wood won

the 2012 cup so he likely has The Cup until it is awarded to the 2013 winner.

I believe some of the registration rules have been relaxed a bit in recent to

People haven't been updating monthly totals as strictly/ quickly as in the past
but I've only done it a couple years.

[cayugabirds-l] CORRECTION: Mis-id'ed both Bairds and white rumped sandpipers montezuma

2013-05-21 Thread david nicosia
After review of the photographs by a second source, my baird's looks to be
to be a larger and lighter semipalmated and my white-rumped a larger least.
a little embarassed. there are a lot of shorebirds up there...wouldn't be
surprised
if there were some actual white-rumpeds up there. Baird's are rare in NY in
spring.
watch out for a lighter more beige colored semipalamated that is a little larger
than the other semi's. There is at  least one on the main pool mudflat that
could
be causing confusion. If you think you see a baird's try to get a photo.

Good birding to all...

See you there.

Linda Orkin

Hello All,

Ornithology, Johnson Center , this upcoming Monday, Nov 14. The meeting
starts at 7:30 PM with the speaker, Ton Schat, scheduled to speak at 8 PM.

in Australia over many extended visits to this continent and Ton will share
wonderful photographs, insights and information about their experiences.
It promises to be a special evening and we hope you all can attend.

Our usual speaker dinner is canceled due to some schedule conflicts and
we are all sorry we will not be able to socialize in this way with Ton and

Hi all,
I saw some black dots in the sky, so looked at them in the binoculars, an
Osprey, a couple may be TVS and one hawk, but the most surprising thing was
there were hundreds of Darners heading north. Even now they are going! At least
three or four in the binocular view any given time! That would mean 10 or so
per sec in the limited location I am watching. They are about 300 to 500 meter
from the ground level.
Because I used 7X25 I could see the darners if I had used 10x45 to focus on
birds I would have missed darners!
Several Pantala flavescens are hanging outside my window.

size is tough and looking at the range of the eastern mainly being coastal
it probably is a western in retrospect. Thanks for the email and help.
Nevertheless it is still a willetgreat bird for Broome County! I will
post more pics of this bird to my flickr account soon.

Hi Dave, thanks for passing on word of the Loggerhead Shrike - great bird, nice
to know they still come through once in a while! Please consider submitting a
report, or at least your nice photographs, to NYSARC (New York State Avian
Records Committee) so the evidence will be part of the official record
(http://www.nybirds.org/NYSARC/goodreport.htm).

On your Willet - separation of the two subspecies can be difficult for many
individuals, something I think tends to be obscured at times these days. That
said, your bird strikes me as looking more like a juvenile Western Willet than
an Eastern. It looks relatively pale overall, including an extensive pale
gray-brown wash on the head, neck and upper breast, seems lanky with long legs
and neck, and has a nicely tapered, two-toned bill. Of course individual
photographs can sometimes be misleading, and intermediate looking birds may not
always be separable... This website has a decent discussion of separating the
two subspecies in juvenile plumage:

[cayugabirds-l] correction

2010-05-09 Thread Alm9413
Sorry everyone.
I meant White-rumped Sandpipers, not White-rumped Warblers. I might have
made up a new species!
Best, Ann

I will have to start reading the posts more thorougly and stay in the
loop. Thanks to all those that post regularly and keep us updated.

[cayugabirds-l] Correction

2009-10-28 Thread Robert Grosek
On Tuesday we spotted hundred's of crows flying over the town of Auburn, not
Aurora.

Other birds seen at MNWR include Fox Sparrows, a Stilt Sandpiper at the
Visitor's Center, and flocks of Mallards and Pintails, numbering in the 100's
each.
