Hi all,

Yesterday afternoon after the rain stopped, I took a long walk up Hunt Hill
Rd. and down Hurd Rd. (town of Dryden, east of Ithaca). There were a surprising
number of groups of birds around. The first group, along Hunt Hill Rd.,
consisted of a number of ruby-crowned kinglets, yellow-rumped warblers, one
black-throated green warbler, two Swainson's thrushes, a phoebe, goldfinches, a
sapsucker, two flickers, one hairy woodpecker, one downy and many
white-throated sparrows. The sparrows were in a wild grape tangle, busily
eating the ripe purple grapes. Earlier in the morning, white-throated sparrows
were eating grey-dogwood fruits in our yard. I never realized fruits were a
food source for these sparrows!

Later in the walk, along Hurd Rd., I came across a second group consisting of a
black-throated green warbler in among yellow-rumped warblers, chickadees,
titmice, and goldfinches.

This morning (Sunday), our yard has a phoebe, ruby-crowned kinglet, robins,
chipping sparrows and white-throated sparrows, in addition to the voracious
goldfinches and blue jays.

Happy frost!

Laura
