Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds

2024-03-07 Thread anneb . clark
On Tuesday, our bluebirds were also checking boxes. But the family ( pair and 3
juveniles, maybe an extra) have been with us all winter. Foraging in curious
ways down in the field that has now been unmowed for three years. That standing
vegetation seems to offer more to more species in winter than I ever
considered.

Hi Madonna,
I'd recommend joining the North American Bluebird Society. You can do so
directly or via The local affiliate in ny http://nysbs.org/>>. They have tons of literature and years of
experience.

Hi Madonna,

The Cornell Lab’s NestWatch program has a great FAQ section – this one about
why nests
fail
 may be helpful.

Hello Bird Friends!

For two years in a row now our bluebird box neighbors have abandoned their nest
of baby birds. ☹️. We're new to this job of providing shelter for bluebirds.
We're puzzled by this behavior of abandoning what appears to have been a once
healthy brood, so questions abound: Why? Was there not enough bugs? Did
something happen to the adults? Were they overwhelmed by heat? etc., etc..
If you have any answers or suggestions for how we can help our bluebird
neighbors to thrive, I'm all ears.

On a short Sunday drive in southern Cayuga county & North Lansing, I saw some
Snow Buntings, including 2 that stood out in a largish (40?) flock of flying
Redpolls!

Saw a few little flocks of Horned Larks, then a larger flock at Belltown Dairy,
Mahaney Rd. at town/ county line,

then found 3 lovely Bluebirds in a tall bare tree on Davis Rd (Lansing).

WE have about 16 nest boxes on poles around our field. Initially they were

House sparrows may move into one box in a pair, but not both. (They don’t
like house sparrows for neighbors either.) Same for tree swallows. By the
time the bluebirds come around, there are still empty boxes to choose from.
Last year, at least 3 boxes contained bluebird families. Fair enough. Try
it, it may provide housing for everyone.

Hi M, K, All,
My opinion in answer to your question is they are birds that spent
the summer WAY further north. If banded we could learn.
