[cayugabirds-l] Lansing and Sapsucker Woods, Thursday AM

2012-05-03 Thread Scott Haber
A small flock of warblers, including a Blackburnian, a Nashville, and
several Yellow-rumped outside my apartment in Lansing this morning seemed
to portend a busy morning for migrants, in addition to the local
Blue-Winged Warbler on territory, and numerous newly-arrived Wood Thrushes
also actively singing, but a loop around the Wilson Trail at Sapsucker
Woods from 7:45 to 8:30 didn't produce much migrant activity at all. Many
newly arrived Sapsucker Woods breeders were singing away on territory
though, and that was very nice to see. My eBird checklist for Sapsucker
Woods is below.

Best,
Scott

[cayugabirds-l] migrant Red-breasted Nuthatches?

2012-05-03 Thread Wesley M Hochachka
Hi everyone,

I know that everyone's exuberantly welcoming the return of all of the spring
migrant species this week, but has anyone else noticed Red-breasted Nuthatches
in places where they normally are not? I'm asking because I did a long walk
through Sapsucker Woods this morning on my way to work, and I heard
Red-breasted Nuthatches at 3 different locations where I have been regularly
making counts for the last 9 months and where I have either never or only once
before heard or seen this species. This makes me wonder if we haven't had a
minor influx of R.B. Nuthatches flying in with all of the other species...

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn Orchard, May 3:

2012-05-03 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
I'm confessing that I officially love the Hawthorn Orchard during migration !

I've only been able to get there in late afternoon yesterday and today, but
still had 46 and 51 total species with 15 different Warblers. I missed some
warblers, like Orange-crowned and Ovenbird, so 20+ warbler species are possible
on one walk around. What's cool is that on every loop around you can see and
hear different birds.

Evan, Dave and Jay have pretty much summed up what's there. The only birds I
can add today are Green Heron, Broad-winged Hawk, Bald Eagle and Osprey.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-Headed Blackbird

2012-05-03 Thread shannon
I happened to be in Endicott earlier this evening and decided to stop by the
marsh to try to see the yellow-headed blackbird again (after being unsuccessful
at trying to find it on Sunday afternoon).  When I arrived, Jeff Gerbracht and
kids had already done a great job of locating it.  Great clear views on this
gorgeous sunny day... was glad to see it was still around.

Not to detract in any way from the spectacularly magnetic Hawthorn Orchard, but
I too found 15 warbler species today, without moving more than 1000 feet from
my house, and probably could have made it 20 without leaving the greater West
Danby area. There are lots of birds around!

[cayugabirds-l] 2012 Cayuga Lake Basin arrivals list is updated

2012-05-03 Thread Dave Nutter
I think I've got the list up-to-date of what species have been found in the Cayuga Lake Basin so far in 2012:http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/Resources/cayuga-lake-basin-first-recordsThis includes the huge influx of birds over the past 3 days of south winds after so many days of north winds. In case you don't see some of those birds listed on those days, note that several species in the influx had already been found, such as Least Sandpiper, Black Tern, Cliff Swallow, and Orange-crowned Warbler. The reported Yellow Rail was outside the Basin to the north. Rather than try to sort out which was first among multiple reports on a given dayof a new species, I am including the those multiple sites, which is an indicator of a sudden wave of birds arriving, as opposed to a single pioneer being discovered. I felt obliged to add a special note about the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds all showing up at feeders in the evening. That is fascinating! Did the people only look then? Did the birds only go to the feeders then? Or was it really such a well-defined front of hummingbirds that so many arrived within a couple hours? Some of the species in the list did not get much publicity: Brant, Little Blue Heron, Semipalmated Plover, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Alder Flycatcher, Veery, Canada Warbler, but dedicated eBirders have found them. Please let me know if there are other species you know of that have been found, or if you've heard of credible earlier reports in or near the Cayuga Lake Basin. The border is tricky in places, but I'm willing to try to figure which side a report is from. It'll probably be a few days before I can do as thorough an update, though.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock Photos

2012-05-03 Thread Evan Barrientos
Hi everyone,
Here are 4 close shots of an American Woodcock that I photographed last night
(May 2) in the field bordered by Snyder and Cherry Rd. north of the airport.
Hard to believe, these were taken handheld, manually focusing, and without an
external flash! Such an awesome bird and one of my favorite Spring traditions.
