2018-05-09 Thread Antonina Roll-Mecak
Dear colleagues,

There is an opening in my lab to study the structure and mechanism of
microtubule regulators with an emphasis on the tubulin code. The formal
announcement is pasted below.

Thanks,

Antonina

*Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda,
USA*

A postdoctoral fellowship opportunity is available in the Cell Biology and
Biophysics Unit headed by Dr. Antonina Roll-Mecak to work on structural and
functional studies of tubulin modification enzymes and molecular motors
using a combination of X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and single molecule
fluorescence microscopy. Research in the Roll-Mecak lab focuses on
deciphering the tubulin code ie how tubulin posttranslational modifications
tune microtubule functions (see for instance Garnham et al., *Cell* 2015,
Valenstein et al., *Cell* 2016, Vemu et al., *JBC* 2016; Zehr et al *Nature
Struct & Molec Biology, *2017). We use a combination of biochemistry, X-ray
crystallography, electron microscopy and single-molecule fluorescence
techniques. For more information about the lab please visit:
https://neuroscience.nih.gov/ninds/rm_lab/

I am looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated Ph.D. graduates with a strong
publication record and expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, X-ray
crystallography or electron microscopy who welcome working in an
interdisciplinary group with a supportive atmosphere and excellent
resources. The Washington DC area is a great place to live with great
access to cultural and outdoor activities. Experience with assembly of
large protein complexes or structure determination by crystallographic
methods or EM is a definite plus. The successful applicant will be awarded
a NINDS Intramural Fellowship. Please send a CV, a one-page research
experience summary and contact information of three references to

That's not a postscript file. It's a "plot84" file, whatever that means.
The ccp4 utility "pltdev" converts it to postscript with slightly incorrect
BoundingBox notations near the top of the file. Edit or delete these and
you should be good to go.

[ccp4bb] Two Post-Doctoral Positions (COFUND) available at IRB, Barcelona

2018-05-09 Thread Pau Martin
The Macias lab at IRB Barcelona is searching for two highly motivated
Structural Biologist PhD students to join our laboratory. Our research
interest is focused on deciphering the mechanisms that correlate cell
signaling with gene expression using high resolution structural biology. We
also aim at discovering how these mechanisms are regulated, and their
consequent implications in human diseases from the structural point of
view. Recently, our work has been focused on the family of transcription
factors Smads, where we have discovered a mechanism that labels these key
components of the TGF-beta pathway first for activation and then for
degradation. We have also identified new DNA binding sites specifically
recognized by Smad proteins.

Using NMR and X-ray crystallography we are currently characterizing the
interactions of Smad proteins and cofactors with DNA promoters, to provide
a first understanding of how these molecular machines work and to pave the
basis for the design of small molecular inhibitors specifically targeted
towards tumor-derived Smad forms.
Interested candidates should send a CV, a letter of motivation, and
academic grades to maria.mac...@irbbarcelona.org.

The fellowships are granted for 4 years including:
* Anual gross salary: 26.519,19€ plus a single payment of 1504,89
relocation support (Spanish tax and social security deductions apply),
* Close mentoring and supervision through prestigious Researchers,
* A personalized doctoral career development plan,
* A training program for scientific and transferable skills.

Conditions: 4 year contracts, fellows will have to comply with the EU
mobility rule (candidates must not have resided or carried out their main
activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years previous to the
call deadline), candidates should be ready to enter an official doctoral
programme in September 2018.

Deadline: 31 May 2018
Interviews: from 12 to 27 July 2018 (exact days to be confirmed)
Incorporation foreseen around 09/2018

[ccp4bb] serious issue: truncate program

2018-05-09 Thread Charles Ballard
Dear All

we discovered a serious bug in TRUNCATE that results in incorrect sets
of amplitudes/sigmas. The problem was introduced at update 7.0.039.
The effect is a complete lack of amplitudes with F/SIGF values within
(roughly) the 10-20 range. It can easily be detected by plotting a
histogram of F/SIGF values from any MTZ file.

A fix will be in the next update.

Charles

[ccp4bb] AW: [ccp4bb] Native Patterson Plot

2018-05-09 Thread Herman . Schreuder
Hi Bernard,

I found a script I made a long time ago which produces a native Patterson. I
tested it with our reasonable recent CCP4 version and it still works!

You have to copy the attached script to your linux directory and make it
executable (type chmod +rwx makpat).
To generate a patterson e.g. from myfile.mtz, you type makpat myfile
It will generate a Patterson map , a postscript file and a log file with a
peaklist.

Good luck!
Herman

Betreff: [EXTERNAL] [ccp4bb] Native Patterson Plot

Hi Fellows/Developers,

I am trying to create a native Patterson map plot, but in ccp4i on windows the
PS plot file (*.plt) is mutilated
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f3cl2980qzws3gj/mono_15_1.plt?dl=0
(wrong orientation & partly off paper) when viewed in ghostview. I vaguely
recall these being mapslicer files,
but starting win ccp4i mapslicer from the interface entrails the attached error
message.

Alternatively, does one know of another way of getting a quick native Patterson
plot?
Neither phenix nor ccp4i2 seem to offer a job menu item..

Many thanks for your help.

Best, BR
