[ccp4bb] postdoc positions - cryoEM - NYC

2019-05-30 Thread Amedee des Georges
Dear CCP4ists,

My group is seeking highy motiviated applicants for two post-doctoral research
associate positions, available immediately. Both projects are geared towards
understanding the effect of ligands on membrane protein dynamics using cryo-EM
and image analysis methods. One is funded by an American Heart Association
Innovative Research Award and the other by the Pharma company Servier.

We are located at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), in the
heart of Manhattan. The ASRC offers a highly interactive and collaborative
environment that integrates structural biologists with colleagues in
neuroscience, photonics, nanoscience and environmental sciences. Combining
world-class experts in these areas with state-of-the-art instrumentation both
at the ASRC and at the adjacent New York Structural Biology Center, including
several FEI Titan cryo-electron microscopes, the ASRC offers a unique
opportunity for research programs to flourish among normally-disparate fields.

Our laboratory studies the structure, function and dynamics of macromolecular
complexes involved in cell homeostasis using cryo-electron microscopy. We are
looking for applicants with experience in structural and molecular biology.
Knowledge of model-building and molecular dynamics are a plus, but experience
in electron microscopy is not required.

Please feel free to share this with interested parties.

Best,

Amedee des Georges

[ccp4bb] K. Rajashankar Obituary

2019-05-30 Thread Frank Murphy
It is with deep sorrow that we note the passing of our colleague, Dr.
Kanagalaghatta R. Rajashankar, long-time Associate Director of the Northeastern
Collaborative Access Team (NE-CAT) at Sector 24 of the Advanced Photon Source.
Dr. Rajashankar passed peacefully in his sleep in the early morning of May
22nd, 2019, after an extended battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of
25 years, Suma, and two daughters, Medha and Manasvi.

Raj completed his undergraduate studies from LB College in Sagara, India,
followed by a Masters in Physics from Manasagangotri, Mysore (India), and a
Ph.D. in Physics from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Immediately
following his doctoral degree, Raj was awarded the Humboldt Fellowship from
Germany where he worked at DESY in Hamburg. He currently was working for
Cornell University, NY and was the Associate Director for NE-CAT at the
Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. In addition to being a
scientist, Raj had several hobbies which were very dear to him. To name a few,
he loved classical music, literature, electronics, building anything, etc. To
top this list was his excellent sense of wit and humor which was his inherent
quality.

Yours truly,

Frank Murphy
NE-CAT

[ccp4bb] PhD position in Structural Biology, Kiel University

2019-05-30 Thread Scheidig, Axel

Dear all,
Please find below the advertisement for a PhD position in our research
group:

*PhD Research position in Protein Biochemistry / Structural Biology,**
**Kiel University, Germany.**
*
A PhD research position is available in the group of Axel Scheidig.

Our research is focused on the biophysical, biochemical and structural
characterizationof proteins involved in biotransformation processes.

Based on our recent publications (Kubitza et al. 2018a, PNAS 115: 11958-
11963; Kubitza et al. (2018b) Acta Crystallogr. F74: 337-344; Kubitza et
al. (2018c) Acta Crystallogr. D74: 422-432) the successful candidate will
investigate enzymes with opposing effects (oxidation vs. reduction) on
nitrogen- and sulfur containing endogenous as well as xenobiotic compounds.

The successful candidate will employ a wide range of biochemical,
biophysical and structural techniques including recombinant protein
expression, protein purification, biophysical characterization (protein-
protein interaction and enzyme kinetics) as well as X-ray crystallography.
The aim is to understand the substrate selectivity and inhibition
mechanisms at an atomic level.

The prospective PhD student will have teaching duties in practical courses
of biochemistry and molecular biology and must have good German language
skills.

Candidates with a strong interest in structural biology and profound
knowledge molecular biology, protein expression and protein purification
(in theory and with practical experience)are encouraged to apply.
Interested candidates are invited to apply by sending one PDF file to Axel
Scheidig (axel.schei...@strubio.uni-kiel.de). The PDF file must contain a
one-page letter of motivation, curriculum vitae in tabular form (no more
than 2 pages), Bachelor and Master certificate (including current transcript
of records) as well as contact details of up to 3 reference persons.

The official announcment of the PhD position can be found at:
