[ccp4bb] RapiData at SSRL 2023 - application deadline extended by two weeks! Wrong dates in earlier post!!

2023-01-12 Thread Smith, Clyde
I put the wrong dates in the previous post ... the course runs from March 22 -
April 1

The deadline for applications for a place at the RapiData 2023 @ SSRL workshop
has been extended until Friday, January 27 2023. There are still a few spots
left, so get your application in!

The workshop will be held virtually from March 22 - April 1 2023. The course
will comprise lectures on the following topics: Specimen preparation, Data
collection strategies, X-ray light sources, X-ray detectors, Data reduction,
Structure solution by MAD, SAD and Molecular Replacement, Complementary methods
(spectroscopy, small angle scattering and cryoEM). There will also be several
days of software tutorials (HKL3000,XDS, CCP4/DIALS, Phenix,
AutoSharp/AutoProc, Shelx, Coot) and you will all get to connect remotely to
the SSRL beamlines to collect both monochromatic and MAD/SAD data. There is
also an opportunity to ship your own samples to SSRL prior to the workshop, and
collect your own data.

Please visit https://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/rapidata/rapidata-2023/ and use
the link on the "Application/Registration" page to apply for the course.
Successful applicants will be notified on February 1 2023, and invited to
register (there will be no registration fee).

Please direct questions to Silvia Russi (sru...@slac.stanford.edu) or Clyde
Smith (csm...@slac.stanford.edu).

Hi Adrian,

this would be a good reason to upgrade your institutions IT department.
When my electronic signature flags my emails as spam (sic!!!), it is
for sure an Outlook client. It is technically rubbish hiding behind
convenience and lazyness ("we have always been going to lunch at
11:30!").

Cheers,
Tim

Re: [ccp4bb] Is this Spam? This looks like Spam.

2023-01-12 Thread Gary Thompson
So this was quite real and not spam, here is an update from jisc

---start

https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/20230111-ServiceDisruption.html

"On Thursday, 05 January 2023, we received notification that one of the email
servers used by JiscMail was listed on a global spam "blacklist", causing
recipient mail servers to start rejecting JiscMail posts.
We reported the issue to the operators of that email server, and worked with
them to ensure that the server was removed from the list. By 09:00hrs on Friday
(06 January) it was confirmed that the server had been removed from the
blacklist, and that normal service had resumed.
Unfortunately, later that day, the server was re-added to the blacklist,
causing recipient servers to start rejecting messages once more.
Due to the way in which the software underpinning the JiscMail service works,
after several bounced or rejected messages to an individual email address, the
software assumes that the address no longer exists and removes it from any
subscribed groups. This had the effect of removing around 50,000 subscriptions
to just short of 500 JiscMail lists.
We are pleased to inform you that, as of 14:00hrs on Wednesday, 11 January
2023, we believe the root cause of the issue (the blacklisting) to have been
resolved, and are in the process of resubscribing all affected users. We expect
this to be completed by no later than 17:00hrs on Wednesday, 11 January 2023.
Despite these issues having been addressed, subscribers and list owners may
continue to recieve error messages that have been "queued" by mail servers
outside of our direct control. These are expected to have fully cleared by
Friday, 13 January 2023.
---end

Note it contains a link back to the jisc website so you can validate it’s a
correct message

Regards
Gary

Me too. My uni says that a Microsoft set of addresses ended up on a spam
blacklist, which is why this happened. I suspect your institutions are also
using office365 outlook (also known as crapmail) as mail server and client

As roberto, I complain all the time to my uni about their mail and it. Probably
as roberto, it has no effect whatsoever.

Can the board admin confirm if this is legitimate or not?

[ccp4bb] C6 Webtool

2023-01-12 Thread Leonhard Kick
Hi all and a belated Happy New Year,

I was wondering if any of you noticed that the C6 Webtool from Janet Newman
(https://c6.csiro.au/C6.asp) is discontinued and offline.
We used it quite extensively to get a short and meaningful comparison of
commercial screens (differences and similarities, mostly).
Do you know if the service was conserved somewhere? Or do you have alternatives
that you preferred anyway? Would be great if you could share your experiences.

Thank you all

Cheers
