The University of California, Irvine is currently accepting applications for a specialist position to manage the day-to-day operations of electron microscopy facilities and services to users at the UC Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI). IMRI operates a large number of open-access user facilities for the characterization of inorganic, organic, and biological materials and devices ranging from sub-Å to macroscopic length scales – available to all university, industry, and non-profit researchers (for details see https://imri.uci.edu/facilities). It offers advanced techniques and services including structural and chemical characterization in different length scales, 3D imaging, surface analysis, physical property measurements, and fabrication of materials and devices by a variety of techniques. The TEM specialist will operate, maintain, and improve the transmission electron microscopes (TEMs); train, supervise, and work directly with users to carry out research; co-manage all aspects of day-to-day IMRI operations; participate in teaching and outreach activities; work with the IMRI leadership to identify and obtain accessories and additional equipment for a phased build-out of the TEM facility; promote IMRI on and off campus; secure grants, perform original research, attend scientific conferences, and publish scientific research in peer-reviewed journals. Salary range: Specialist: $86,900-$181,800 QUALIFICATIONS Basic qualifications (required at time of application) The successful applicants must hold PhD or equivalent degrees in the areas of Biology, Medicine, Materials Science, Physics, or Chemistry, and be TEM experts with at least five years of in-depth, hands-on experience with TEM imaging, data analysis, sample preparation, and maintenance of TEM equipment. Experience in cryo-TEM is preferable. The applicant must have mastery of modern TEM instrumentation and methods, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Candidates with experience operating user facilities and expertise with advanced TEM techniques are of particular interest. A funded postdoctoral position in structural biology is available immediately in the laboratory of Professor Celia Goulding at the University of California, Irvine. Our studies focus on the structural biology and biochemistry of Mycobacterium tuberculosis iron/heme uptake and bacterial contact-dependent growth inhibition. Potential projects will utilize X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy and biochemical studies. A Ph.D. in biochemistry or molecular biology with experience in protein crystallography is preferred. The Goulding lab in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the University of California at Irvine seeks to recruit an outstanding postdoctoral scientist with experience and interest in structural biology and biochemistry of protein complexes. The Goulding lab focuses on iron uptake in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This position provides the opportunity for broad training in structural biology, metalloprotein biochemistry, kinetics, spectroscopy, and microbiology. The University of California at Irvine campus is located on the beautiful Southern Californian coast-line approximately five miles from vibrant Newport Beach and Crystal Cove. It is also approximately 40 miles from both Los Angeles and San Diego. The surrounding areas offer affordable rental housing with a short walk/ride to campus, the beach and nightlife. Candidates must have their Ph.D. by the beginning date of the appointment in Biological Chemistry or a related discipline (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics, Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemical, and Biomedical engineering). The successful candidate will have strong experience in molecular biology, protein expression, purification, crystallization, and functional analysis. Training in X-ray crystallographer is desirable.
