[ccp4bb] Beamline Scientist Position at the BioCAT Beamline at the Advanced Photon Source

2021-07-16 Thread Thomas Irving
The Biophysics Collaborative Access Team (BioCAT) at the Illinois Institute
of Technology operates a world class biological small angle X-ray
scattering and diffraction beamline 18ID at the Advanced Photon Source
(APS), Argonne National Laboratory. The facility is used by scientists and
students from university, government, and industrial labs around the world.
These groups use BioCAT to conduct research in areas from basic biomedical
research to translational medicine.

BioCAT is seeking a Ph.D. level scientist to lead the solution small angle
X-ray scattering (SAXS) user program. You will serve as a beamline
scientist, supporting in-person and remote/mail-in users of the BioCAT
facility. You will have primary responsibility for supporting SAXS users at
the beamline, and maintaining the state-of-the-art sample preparation and
sample delivery and characterization equipment. You will also collaborate
scientifically with users and other beamline staff.

*Responsibilities:*

· Support and grow an active user community, including users from
academia, government, and industry, using solution SAXS on biological
macromolecules for biomedical research.

· Collaborate scientifically with users, including on experimental
design, data analysis, interpretation, and publication.

· Contribute to the development and implementation of advanced
methodologies for SAXS, both experimental and analytical, and to the
improvement of the X-ray scattering instrument.

· Train students and new users in data collection and analysis for
SAXS.

· Maintain and enhance the sample preparation, characterization, and
delivery capabilities for SAXS. This includes extensive liquid
chromatography instrumentation.

*Essential qualifications:*

· Ph.D. or equivalent in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology,
or a related field.

· Interest and ability to work in a fast-paced collaborative research
environment.

· Record of scientific publications.

· Ability to work and communicate effectively with technical experts,
operations staff, and researchers at all levels, including students,
postdocs, and facility users.

Preference will be given to candidates with significant experience in
hands-on biological macromolecular purification and biophysical
characterization. Significant structural biology experience is also highly
desirable. Extensive experience with small angle scattering (either of
neutrons or X-rays) is an asset, but training in this technique can be
provided on the job.

For further information about the position, please contact BioCAT Director
Tom Irving (irv...@iit.edu) or Deputy Director Jesse Hopkins (
jhopki...@iit.edu). Applications received by August 9th are guaranteed full
consideration, but applications will be accepted until the position is
filled.

Applicants should send:

· A cover letter

· A curriculum vitae

· A list of publications (can be included in the CV)

· The names and contact information for three references

to Carrie Clark (mclar...@iit.edu).

diversity within its community. It actively seeks applications from all
individuals regardless of race, color, sex, marital status, religion,
creed, national origin, disability, age, military or veteran status, sexual
orientation, and/or gender identity and expression. All qualified
applicants will receive equal consideration for employment

[ccp4bb] Available SAXS time at Beamline18ID at the APS

2020-03-20 Thread Thomas Irving
The BioCAT beamline 18ID is interested in hosting any SAXS experiments
related to Covid-19 research as remote collaborations where samples are
sent to us and run by beamline staff. People with suitable projects should
contact Srinivas Chakravarthy at schakra...@gmail.com

[ccp4bb] SAXS Workshop at BioCAT at teh Advanced Photon Source - Second Notice.

2019-10-16 Thread Thomas Irving
BioCAT is offering its fifth intensive HOW-TO course in BioSAXS. Students
will have two days of lectures and hands-on software tutorials on the
basics of BioSAXS data collection and processing from expert practitioners
in the field. This will be followed by data collection on the BioCAT
beamline (Sector 18 at the APS) and data analysis help. Students are
encouraged to bring 1-2 research samples for the data collection.

Also, for the first time ever, BioCAT is offering this course for remote
participants. Remote participants will get a live-stream of the lectures,
and all of the tutorial materials. They will not be able to collect data.

The course will take place from 11/5/19-11/7/19 at the APS. Registration
for on-site participants is first come, first served, and limited to the
first 15 registrants due to time constraints on how many users can collect
data during the course. Spaces are still available.

Full information, a link for registration, and the tentative schedule can
be found on our website:
