I never ran an RL01 on my RL11 (my RL01 mostly lived on my RL8A, but
sometimes ran on an RLV11 in a Qbus box).
I've only ever run RL02s on an RL11.

> Are there any known issues?

None that I can think of. They should be perfectly happy in the same
box. They have different CSRs, and different vectors. No possibility
for a conflict there. They might be at the same BR level (have to
look - it's the wee PCB plugged into the machined pin socket), but if
so, that just matters which board is in front of the other as to who
gets interrupts first. It's _possible_ there's a preferential order
there, but it's not a limitation I recall from the old days.

You have an RX01 and an RX11 (M7846) not an RX211 (M8256), right?

If you have a KM11 or replica, you can use that to debug the RX01.

RX01 and RL01 on same UNIBUS system

2017-08-17 Thread william degnan via cctalk
Just curious,
Is there anyone out there with a combo RX01 and RL01 on the same UNIBUS
system, today? Are there any known issues?

I found a large box of RX01 disks, lucky me. Working to get the RX01 drive
running, experimenting. My particular PDP 11 does not like it (11/40) but
I think the drive is faulty, at least so far. Much work to do.

I have an 11/40 with RX02 and RL02.
I may be wrong, but perhaps the RX01 UNIBUS interface module
has no NPR passing on its contact fingers. So, if you put the RX01
interface module in a slot that was occupied by a “DMA capable”
device or the G7273 grant continuity card, you may have to add a
wire on the backplane (CA1-CB1 IIRC).

I have an 11/34C (cache and floating point options) with (1) RX02, (2)
RL02, (1) SCSI, (1) TK50 and (1) DZ11 running RT, TSX, RSX and BSD 2.9
with no problems.

Your 11/40 should ultimately be "happy" with your RX01 ;)

I think that our system at DEC (RSTS/E development) had that plus a whole lot
more. The machine was called ARK because "it had two of everything". By the
time I got there it wasn't quite every supported I/O device, but certainly a
substantial subset.

There are a few obscure cases of conflicting address assignments among Unibus
devices, but not in this case. It should work fine as far as I can see.

OK, I now have 4 expressions of interest.

If Philipp can arrange something in a reasonable timescale he has priority
Otherwise I think Peter Brown's collection from the Medway towns is likely to
be best.
The other Peter from Ireland can be a reserve
and Dave Wade is definitely still interested but has deferred to Philipp and
given timing difficulties should probably be a reserve.

Last chance for anyone else to join this list.

It is SCSI.
You are one of two people interested both of whom have transport problems.
I REALLY don't want to pack it for transport though there a few courier firms
that could send it
collecting from here (I'd probably put DPD as the most reliable that knows this
location)

If you're keen enough the way I might suggest if you're in a reasonably
accessible part of Germany (Germany is a big place, Bavaria is probably too far)
would be to drive to Hook of Holland; take the ferry to Harwich; then drive
here (Rayleigh Weir - less than an hour from Harwich)
then return in a similar manner. No idea whether air freight from Southend
airport (less than 10Km from here) would be practical and affordable.

Don't commit to spending money until I have some more response from Dave Wade
(other interested party)

IBM service manuals (certainly for PCs, PS/2s etc) did not normally contain
schematics. They were for repairs at the FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) level,
which is probably the complete monitor!.

The PS/2 hardware technical reference manual (I have it) also does not
contain any schematics. Unlike the older PC family techrefs which did
(monitors, MDA and CGA, are in volume 1 of the Options & Adapters
TechRef).

I think I have seen at least one IBM VGA monitor 'service manual'. It
told you how to get the case off, and how to adjust those presets that
sensibly could be set up in the field. In other words not much use.

There may have been a 3rd party manual, like a Sams Photofact for
it though. I don't have anything AFAIK.
