[cctalk] Dec Vax in Simh - VMS Operating system

2023-08-20 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Hello All,

I am working to get my two microvax systems working, I have a couple of
microvax 3800 systems.

While I am waiting to get the real hardware going, I would like to set up
simh with vms to use for testing.

I don't really need the latest version of vms, any old version with tcp/ip
would work. I do have about 16 dumb terminals i want to run as a lab and
connect to the vax.

Can anyone provide guidance on this matter for setting up and install of
VMS in sinh? I realize that there was the openvms hobbyist program, but i
may want to grab an older version of the os if it will run smoother on the
older hardware.

Open to suggestions, I hope to post back with some pictures once the real
vax 3800 hardware is running.

Thanks,

Devin D.

Good to know what they go to now, perhaps i can sell some off to others

Thank you for the quick reply

I have had several inquiries on the tezro. I am out of town at the moment.
Once i get back, let me get some pictures posted, and i will fire it up
with a serial console to get the hinv listing.

I am willing to ship, but due to the size of the computer, it may need to
be crated, i would worry about it getting damaged in the mail with just
usps or UPS. There is a nearby place in orlando fl called craters and
freighters, i used them to ship my sgi crimson, so that may be the way to
safely ship the tezro if needed.

It is located in Melbourne Fl.

[cctalk] Sgi tezero for sale

2023-04-07 Thread devin davison via cctalk
I have a sgi tezro for sale. My last sgi machine, i used to have crimson
and onyx2 desksides.

The front plastic is a little torn. It has a dallas battery problem. I
recall getting it to boot by manually typing in the boot info, but it may
require soldering to fix the battery.

Open to offers. My last sgi machine, i think it's time for me to let it go.
As I clean up more, I might be able to find the console cable and see if it
still boots, but I'm unsure what its operating condition is as it sits.

issues on adm 3 terminals, i have 16 terminals now working, 10 of them

[cctalk] Dec rl02 disk pack shelf design

Hello,

I have many rl02 disk packs for my pdp 11/34 and 11/05. I have just been
stacking them upright, but that has not been the safest or the most space
efficient. Were any kinds of shelves made for these disk packs, perhaps
similar to 9 track hanging tape racks? Trying to make things look more
organized too.

Hoping someone here has one and can share a pic, perhaps it is a design i
can duplicate and make with some woodworking tools.

Thanks,

2022-07-29 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Hello,

Been a while since i last posted here.

I have a few pdp 11/34 systems. The drives i am using are RL02 drives.

Is it possible to install Ultrix on a 34? I have been testing out Ultrix in
the simh emulator. I see during the install the 34 mentioned as a
recognized cpu type, but later in the install the system hangs. This hang
does not occur if i emulate a later cpu system like the 11/83.

Not sure if ultrix can be installed due to the memory limitation, if not,
rsx will be my second choice.

Hoping to have some real hardware running soon!

Hello,

The person that refered me to my present job at a datacenter passed away
this past monday. He was a hardware / software engineer for modcomp
computers. He left me all of the computers and documents. there are too
many books to keep, stuff concerning the modcomp computers that is not
saved anywhere else that i can tell.

I have picked up storage containers for all the books, and i can scan it
all. after that, its all probally going in the recycle bin, as i dont know
where or how i would keep such a large pile of paper manuals on hand.

what is the prefered format to upload things to bitsavers in? is pdf
acceptable?

How can i create a pdf that is not too big on file size? Can the text be
recognized and be made searchable within the scanned pdf?

any input would be appreciated, Thanks.

Thank you for the valuable information.
It seems like v7 unix will be the way to go. Perhaps i can get some uucp
connection going over a serial line out of the machine, that could be
interesting.

I found this page, and it confirms what you said about 2.11 bsd, not
compatible with the 11/34 cpu.

https://minnie.tuhs.org/PUPS/node6.html

On the same page, there is mention of 2.9 bsd, and the 11/34 is listed as
compatible. Is tcpip availible in this version?

Thank you again for the helpful info.

Unix or BSD for Dec PDP 11/34 and 11/45

2021-09-17 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Hello,

I had asked this question on the tuhs discord channel, no response yet so i
figured i would try here.

I'm working to get my pdp 11/34 and 11/45 running. I was curious what
versions of unix or bsd would work on the machines i have. I wanted to set
up the systems with a bunch of dumb terminals and show them off at a local
maker fair.
If possible too, id like to be able to telnet in to unix or bsd.I was also
curious if a ethernet interface exists for my unibus systems, or if i could
SLIP/PPP serial to another machine,so i could telnet in as well as use dumb
terminals.

On a bit of a side question, did minix exist for the pdp11? There is
mention of it on wikipedia, but ive not found much other mention of it. I
read the minix book, and have used it quite a bit on the ibm pc, so i
figured i would ask if a copy for the pdp 11 is out there.

Modcomp computers and documentation

2020-10-04 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Greetings everyone, it's Been a while since i posted here.

I had picked up some modcomp minicomputers over the past couple years. A
modcomp classic, with a nice front panel with binary swiches, similar to a
pdp 11. There is a modcomp 32 as well, the machine boots from internal
floppy drives.

I was eager to pick up these machines, and save them from being thrown out.
I picked up all of the documentation as well. Everything. A truckload of os
information. I started to scan it all, but about 3/4 of the way through, my
scanner broke.

The 32 machine was not stored in climate controlled conditions before i
picked it up, and is a bit more worn. It is designed to boot off floppys to
load the microcode into the cpu... but the floppys... id be supprised if
anything survived. Stored in bad conditions.

The classic has internal microcode roms and will not have the same
troublesome problem.

I have been unable to devote the time and space to these machines as i had
planned. I have been far too busy working at ibm, i am planning to shut
down my side interests and focus on my dec pdp 11 stuff and ibm mainframe.

I am looking to see if anyone would be interested in buying these. I spent
a great deal getting them moved and keeping them in cool climate controlled
storage, i am looking to see if i can get any offers and break even.

Keep in mind, they are the size of a computer rack and heavy.

I will post back with pictures soon.

TRS 80 Model 12 Picked up

2020-07-28 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Greetings. It has been an interesting day. Rather late in the day, a buddy
notified me of a local thrift store that went under, and mentioned there
may be some computers on site up for grabs. Upon arrival, the place was a
mess, but the folks there were friendly and gave me the tour, everything
had to go, the shopkeeper skipped town and left the place full of junk for
the Building owner to clean out.

I found a TRS 80 Model 12, a vga commodore branded monitor, commodore
cassette drive, among some misc 5.25 floppy disks. There may be more, I
need to go back for another sweep in the morning.

The computer is extremely big, taking up an entire kitchen table, rivaling
the space that is taken up on my desk for a pdp 11. I am looking to clear a
space to work on it without dropping parts.

The machine looks to be clean, However i am missing the keyboard.
The machine does not power on or show anything on the screen. I do hear a
high pitched hiss, so there may be some kind of power supply issue. I was
not aware of this model of machine, I am curious if anyone has a spare
keyboard for sale.

I am not familiar with this model, it has 2, 8 inch floppy drives on the
front. I am curious about the format of the disks, would it be possible to
use another computer with an 8 inch drive to make a floppy to start the
machine, or do the drives use an odd difficult format that would be
impossible to write?

Modcomp Minicomputers Related - Preservation and Repair

2019-11-05 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Greeting. Its been a while since I have posted here. A while back I picked
up a large Modcomp classic minicomputer. Recently the person i picked the
computer up off of gave me a call to come and get many books and software,
among much more hardware. I have picked up hundreds of 9 track tapes. The
modcomp computer mainly ran the real time os MAX, however i also found many
tapes for a unix variant for the machine, that supported real time
operation as well.

I am trying to preserve things as best i can, I am set to pick up 3 more
machines, and among the tapes and documentation, Space is running out fast.

I am curious if any of this documentation has been archived already, if
not, i can get to scanning it in my free time. I have documentation on
everything. The hardware, the software, os code, everything.

The tapes are another issue all together. They were stored in probably the
worst possible place, in a area of extreme heat and humidity. Some are
musty, others look like new. I do not own a 9 track drive, i was thinking
it would be possible to get a 9 track drive with a scsi interface attached
to a more modern Linux system to dump the tapes to images. If anyone here
has suggestions on how to read off the tapes or where to find a drive, it
would be most helpful.

As a last resort, I have a 9 track drive that is attached to my pdp 11/34,
however i have not gotten that system into working order yet either, and am
unsure of if the drive is working yet.

I was also given an old emulator for the system,m written for linux. I have
not gotten the software to work yet. I need to be sure the software is not
still a licenced product and that the company is gone before i post it.
Perhaps someone here can find out why its not working. On a modern debian
system, it attempts to run and just exits, without any info as to whats
wrong.

Any help or suggestions on how to best preserve the documentation and
software is most appreciated. I am undecided on what to do with the
hardware yet. The hardware is fascinating, and there is a bunch of it,
however it is quite large and is taking up a large portion of space. The
hope is to at least get one running to test out and see if i decide to keep
a system after that.

Sgi crimson for sale

2019-07-23 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Hello, Havent posted here for a while. I usually post about pdp11 and vax
stuff.

I am big into sgi equipment, I have many deskside coputers and a full onyx
1000 rack. I have just about every machine in the sgi linup and I need to
clear out most of my big sgi stuff. I was big into the nekochan forums, but
sadly since that shut down, supoprt has been limited, and i want to get
this stuff to someone that can use it.

I have a sgi crimson for sale. Possible intermittent power supply issue.
Problem with the IO3 board prevents it from booting

I have an onyx2 for sale in full working order. Its my main machine, im
migrating work to a Octane2.

I also have a loaded origin / onyx2 loaded with hardware, but i havent been
able to get it to post or get to the serial console. Good machine for parts
or to try and fix.

Many octane 2 machines, a couple are fully loaded with 8gb of memory, dual
processors, pci expansion box, etc.

Enough indys to make a jenga tower.

Indigo with keyboard

indigo 2 with matching keyboard.

Might be persuaded to sell the onyx 1000 rack, im not going to part it out,
and needs a forklift to be moved.

2 Sgi tezro's in working order. I picked them both up a year or two ago, i
used them in a headless serial console fassion, i was not able to get my
monitor to sysc with either of them. They both work aside from Battery/RTC
warnings.

I am open to offers, Im not looking to just give them away. Im hoping to
recoup some of my money to move and pay for college.

Open to answer any questions about them

PDP 11 repairs in progress

2019-01-15 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Hello, ive been reading on the list here for a while. I'm usually in the
background not seen much, I figured i would give a status update on my pdp
11/34 system. I have been moving quite often for work over the past couple
years, and still have not gotten my machine running since picking it up
over 3 years ago. Thankfully I have all of the equipment and peripherals in
one place now, and am hoping to get this thing finally running soon.

I had picked up an entire truckload of a pdp 11/34 system. Its an 11/34
with a tape drive in a separate rack, 2 rl02 drives and an rl01. Lots of
disk packs and terminals. I fought with some power supply troubles at
first, but after some part swapping i got the machine to power back up. As
of right now, i have a minimal machine that i can key in programs on the
front panel. I was able to enter programs through the front panel that
would display on the vt100 connected via current loop.

Thats pretty much the state of things right now. The system is in a minimal
state, most of the cards are removed for troubleshooting. i wanted to test
the hardware and see if i can boot to a disk packs. My disk packs appear to
be loaded with RSX.

I was trying to switch from current loop to rs232, so i can connect the
machine to a modern computer with a serial port, and dump diagnostics over
the line to test the machine. I have tried wiring up the cable, but am
getting intermittent garbage on the terminal. Thats pretty much the hangup
at the moment. I hope to over the weekend troubleshoot it further and get
this project moving again.

There is a lot of local activity here with all the hacker spaces and
amateur radio folks, i really want to get it running in some kind of public
manner that others can interact with, perhaps some kind of telnet gateway
or over ax.25 packet, but thats later down the line once its running.

There is also another 11 I am picking up in Georgia in the following week,
so i have that drive ahead of me. Not even sure i will get started checking
the other system out till the 34 is running.

Well, thats about it for the state of things and my progress. Once i get
things cleaned up a little better ill post back with some pictures of the
current setup.

The line about being used with an early computer as a display caught my

would it have? is there an interface for the thing for the pdp 11 or a

Trying to find a good home for it. I just went through the back room and

Odd Hp leds in dip package

2018-11-21 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Hello. Encountered a couple odd parts in the pile today, not sure if they
are anything special. Hp branded dip packages with gold leads. They appear
to be leds in 4 grid patterns on the face. Im curious what they are out of,
most likely an old hp computer or calculator.

Part number on the back is hp5033592-101

i could not find any information online about them. If they are of use to
someone with a hp conputer let me know. If not im trying to find a
datasheet and use them in a project.

Ive been kinda debating setting up a web store and stockpiling the nicer
pci, isa and agp cards that would be otherwise scrapped out at the shop. If
you are in need of a card, let me know and i can set you up with a deal,
tested worKing.

just send me an email with what you need and i will let you know whats in
stock. Idea is to catch the good cards before they end up in the barrel.
Even still ive had about 50/50 luck with getting stuff to work once its out
there.

Modcomp VME bus 68000 computer

2018-11-04 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Hello, been a while since ive written to the list. I met someone the other
day that used to work for modcomp. He gave me a tour, he still has working
modcomp computers in his home. He was clearing out a bunch of stuff, he
gave me a bunch of terminals and dos era computers. Among the computers is
a modcomp branded motorolla 68k based machine. I can not find any
information on the system. From what i understand, the system was to be
tied in to the modcomp minicomputer bus and used as a modern alternative
for large antiquated disks and tapes. There is a large pair of interface
connectors on the back, never seen anything like them before.

I do not have a modomp computer yet, but this 68k machine looks quite
interesting. It is essentially a vme bus backpane in a desktop computer
case. A hard disk and tape drive are installed. Looks to have floating
point and network card as well. I managed to make the proper serial cable,
and was able to get to a debugger and monitor at power on. I was under the
understanding that this machine could run a port of unix to 68k, called
unix/68. I am uncertain of any details on the machine, i was hoping someone
here could me in the right direction of getting the machine to boot. The
drive still spins up, it may even have an install of unix on it, i might
have to type in some kind of boot parameter or jump to some address from
the monitor to kick off the boot process.

Any advice on how to proceed is appreciated.
Within the following month i am supposed to get a mountain of modcomp
documentation, ill have to check back here and see if its duplicate or
original information and scan it all. He was also going to give me a copy
of a modcomp emulator he wrote, I have found no such thing elsewhere on
line, so perhaps it would be of use to someone else here too once i get it.

SunBlade 2000 workstations

2018-06-11 Thread devin davison via cctalk
I have 3 sunblade 2000 workstations for sale. They arrived as surplus
equipment. One of the machines does not power on, the other two boot up to
sun os with proprietary software that was used from the company they came
from. THe drives must be wiped before i send them out. They are quite
heavy, so that will be a factor in shipping.

I am open to offers on a single machine or the whole lot, if you have any
questions feel free to ask.

I have some spare cpu's that fit the machines as well, although they all
appear to have 2 cpu's installed already.

Re: Nekochan has been shut down :(

2018-05-25 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Ive been hanging around on nekochan since high school. Its been my go to
forum for a while and im not sure what I will do without it. There was a
discussion on the forum itself a while ago about setting up some kind of
bot to scrape the forum posts and archive the content. I decided against
trying to do so myself as it seemed that it could take up quite a bit of
bandwith and i did not want to offend the site owner.
I have an entire room full of sgi equipment, and the information onthe site
was valuable to me. I never had direct contact with the site owner, does
anyone know of contact information for him? I would like to contact him,
and if he is deciding on closing up the site, i would like to try and work
with him to preserve some of the important discussion and documentation the
site provided. As mentioned in a previous message to the list, another sgi
forum has popped up already, i do not want to try and start my own forum
and have a division of what few sgi owners there are out there, but if need
be, i will host some of the documentation from the nekochan site if i can
get it.

If anyone has contact information for the owner of the nekochan site,
please let me know so i can get in contact with him.

I Have an indigo that has not gotten much use aside from when i first

memory. As a last resort, I could sell you my machine. It boots, I had
rigged a peice of jumper wire to the battery to overcome a flat battery, i
did not want to attempt desoldering the battery on board. I have been
focusing less on the smaller workstations like the indigo and octane and
have been using my onyx and crimson, so I am looking to get rid of the
smaller workstations.

Picked up a couple 386 machines

2018-02-28 Thread devin davison via cctalk
While working at the scrapyard today, i managed to get a couple 386
machines right as they were being dropped off. One is a pakard bell
with monitor, in pristine condition. The other is a Tandy 2500 with
monitor, in rough looking shape but working too. The monitor is pretty
beat up for the tandy but working.

I have been on the look ut for a good 386 mahine for a while now, i
got kinda lucky and picked up two working systems in one day.

The pakard bell is up and running fine, it was a pretty standard
machine and just needed a hard drive.

The tandy 2500 is pretty nice as well, it has a cdrom and a hard drive
installed, although the hard drive is dead and seems to only accept AT
hard drives.

I am still learning about tandy computers, on my other machines, i was
unable to find an 8 bit isa cad that could support newer ide drives.
On the machine i just picked up it looks like a 16 bit isa slot is
free, if i were to install a 16 bit ide hard drive controller for use
with newer ide drives, would it work, or cause some kind of conflict
with the onboard hard drive controller?

The floppy drive is quite dirty but reads disks sometimes, i need to
clean it up. Im hoping to post back with a couple pictures of both the
machines running. I do not need them both, I really like the packard
bell, but if someone absolutely needs a 386 machine with monitor I am
open to offers to get one shipped out and keep the other one.

Re: Google, Wikipedia directly on ASCII terminal?

2018-01-16 Thread devin davison via cctalk
I personally have had a hard time even trying to get a traditional
POTS phone line installed over here. The only offerings from atnt and
comcast are voip nonsense. Its kinda redundant and buggy trying to
dial up over a comcast voip line. ive tried it, it drops constantly.
The sales staff do not even know what i am asking for when i ask for a
traditional line over a voip line.

Being as it was so hard to get a phone line set up over here, i looked
into this as an option. Its called a wifi232.

http://biosrhythm.com/?page_id=1453

I tried one out on a tandy 1000 and it worked flawlessly. I had set up
linux system and made it remotely accessable via telnet, and was able
to reach it via the dos running tandy 1000. I did not have the correct
adapter at the time, but i dont see anything stopping you from
plugging it into a vt100 directly.

I was looking to use the phone line as a kind of last resort
connection to deliver mail and keep in touch, but ironically, it goes
down more often than any other provider, and is the first thing to go
in a storm. I personally have been looking into getting a cheap cell
phone under the provider "ting" which only bills you for the data
used. Set that up as a wifi hotspot and get it talking to the wifi232
connected to a dumb terminal and i think it would be a good setup. if
you telnet into a linux system that has the lynx web browser
installed, you can view google and wikipedia quite easily.

Let me know if you think that kind of setup would be of any use to you.

good timing to ask. i ordered a similar connector that should do the job

should be a day or two more before it gets here.

Thanks for all the advice. Oops,A little late reading whole brittle

chips of plastic everywhere now. The plastic does not age well. The

that may be something i can clean out and repair.

running 10.4, i do not have much interest in osx. the 68k and ppc
machines are what i grew up with, thats my focus. I have a pile of mac
se's, hopefully if i can get the g3 running it will make getting media
made for the se's easier.

Picked up beige Mac G3

2017-12-11 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Someone just dropped off a mac g3 at the scrapyard I work at and I picked it up.
It has a failing hard drive. Replaced the drive, downloaded and burned
a disk with mac os 8 on it, but it refuses to boot to it. How do I go
about installing the software on this machine?

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but figured it would be worth a
shot. Thanks.

Picked up job at electronic recycling center

2017-10-29 Thread devin davison via cctalk
I recently picked up a job at an electronic recycling center. Harris
is right around the corner from us, as well as a bunch of technical
schools and aerospace related businesses. All of thier old stuff ends
up at the shop to be resold as surplus or broken down and scrapped.

There tends to be to much to process, and inside space is limited.
Excess equipment is stored outside in tents, and it goes to crap quite
quickly unfortunately. The humidity and rain destroys stuff outside
quickly. I am uncertain of how many requests I will get, but if anyone
is looking for something in particular, please send me an email and I
will keep an eye out for you. The place is a goldmine, and a lot of
nice older gear is going to waste because the store owners do not know
what it is.

Examples of stuff that comes in are old microcomputers like the c64,
nice 486 like machines with good isa cards in them, TONS of HP and
tectronics test equipment, ham radio gear, you name it.
There is a ton of good stuff here, i am trying to find some a good
home before it gets stripped out.
Some of this stuff works fine, the tandy 1000 computer I picked up
this weekend works flawlessly for example. Other things are in a
broken or parts state, but within reach of repair. There is a lot of
new gear there as well, not many machines come in with nice graphics
cards in them, but tons of workstations with lots of ram and hard
drives are common. We get so many servers they are broken down almost
immediately unless they are particularly new or unique in some way.

Lets see how busy my inbox gets, if you are in need of something,
please send me an email, i can keep an eye out for it and hopefully be
of service.I work on Saturdays, that is the day i will be on site to
look for things.

Stuff will be priced as surplus/used. Hopefully i can be of use and
keep some of this stuff out of the scrap pile.

need to get a proper boot disk made before i send it off. Pictures to

I picked up a tandy 1000 TX with a color CM 11 monitor. Both are in

Ive tried writing 720K boot disks from my windows computer but it is

I do not particularly need such a machine, and am open to trade or

something packet radio related over here. Also, the boxes both had us

HP 900 model 300 monitor

2017-10-01 Thread devin davison via cctalk
I found another HP machine at the scrapyard today. I have another
similar model that boots up to HP basic. I do not see an exact model
number anywhere on it, all i see is Hp 9000/300 on the front. It
appears similar to the other machine i have, although this machine
lacks the vga port and has what looks to be just a composite port
marked Video. I have not managed to get it working with any of my
monitors. All the nicer lcd monitors i have around here just say no
signal. I tried a sony crt monitor, one that is usually my go to for
when my lcd monitors do not work. When connected to a composite jack i
definitely see something somewhat resembling a boot up screen with
letters, but out of focus/sync and un readable.

Does anyone out there know of what kind of video this thing puts out
and what kind of monitor i would need?

The model i have is as seen in the picture on this page at the Hp
computer museum

similar issues. kept complaining the drive was dirty even after running a

I have quite a bit of sgi gear and have been moving quite a bit of data
from a linux machine to my sgi gear via tape recently. dat dds4 and dat 72
drives work good and the tapes are easy to come by. i have many dell
branded dat drives that work without any special configuration. for larger
capacity tapes i use a dell dlt drive. you have to make some tweaks to a
file to make the drive use its full capacity but it works well too.

i trust dlt tapes over dat tapes. i do not make multiple backups to the
same tape. the tapes degrade with use. i make a backup. store the tape, and
only use that tape for future restore operations. so i would reccomend dlt
drives if you can get a compatible drive and a box of new tapes at a good
price.

Re: BBS software for the PDP 11

2017-05-18 Thread devin davison via cctalk
I did not expect so much feedback, thanks to everyone who responded. I am
still reading over all the replies.

I am indeed looking to run the hardware for a extended duration or non stop
if I can manage to get a good bbs up and running.

Power consumption and heat output is not an issue. The machine is set up in
its own climate controlled area where it can be left to run for long
periods of time.

I am not much of a programmer. I thought about writing my own little dinky
bbs in assembly or something, but worried i would not understand how to get
information stored in a sane manner on the disks or backup to a common
format to tape. If i were to run something under 2.11bsd, i could just dump
something to tape with tar, which seems alot easier that writing everything
from scratch. It would be interesting to write it all from scratch, but i
lack the knowledge to do so at them moment.

I would like to be able to possible run other tasks on the machine while it
is running, i have a couple of terminals attached, so unix looks like it
may be the way for me to go. I have a heavy investment in RSX too though, i
have all the documentation for it here in large binders, it certainly would
be interesting to run it on an os ive not seen much of.

Still looking over my options, i will post back after i read over all the
replys better.

Made some progress with the AS400. Looks like one of the hard drives has
failed, it stated that if another disk fails then there could be a loss of
data.

Plan was to back up the system to a couple of 8GB QIC tapes, however
looking at my tapes they turned out to be only QIC525 MB tapes, and are not
enough to back up the entire machine. Shopping around, i am not seeing 8GB
tapes for less than $40, which is kinda costly. I do not know how to
determine the total size of files on the system, or how many tapes the
completed backup will be. There is a scsi port on the back of the machine.
If i pick up an ibm branded drive, can i connect just any ibm branded tape
drive, or do i need a specific model? I recall seeing a 8MM drive at the
place where i got it , and possibly an external dat drive as well. I have
plenty of dat tapes, I am trying to get a drive where the media has a
higher capacity / lower cost.

I read that there is a printer port on the back of my Infowindow II
terminal, do i need a special ibm printer? if not, i have a good dot matrix
printer here with a box of paper that should do the job.

Leaving it powered down after tonight until i can make a complete save.
Thanks to all for the advice so far. Really steep learning curve but quite
an interesting machine.

Re: IBM AS400 questions

2017-04-09 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Thanks for the info. I was worried that I needed special disks, these ones
are holding up for now.
my machine has a drive for 4/8gb tapes. I have never seen such a drive on a
machine till this one. I am used to DDS DLT and LTO tapes.

Unfortunately, what i thought was a nice new 4gb ibm branded tape sealed in
box turned out to be some kind of test tape. So that is no good for
backups. I bought a bunch of other sony tapes, but they are only 525mb.
Will those work in my drive as well?

As a last resort, i see a scsi connector on the back of the machine, can i
connect any old DDS or DLT tape drive, or do i need a specific drive meant
speciffically for the as400, like the hard drives?

What is the name of these tape cartriges, what should i look for so i can
but them online. Ive tried ebay / amazon with the term "QIC 4/8gb tape"
with few results aside from the drives.

I am being outbid left and right on those PDP 11 DOS books. Only a few
hours left, if someone else wants to step in and bid then, go for it, i can
not bid any further. Apparently one of them was not on bitsavers.

IBM AS400 questions

2017-04-09 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Alright, it was quite a while back that I picked up my ibm AS400 model 170.
I had asked some questions on the list, it was locked with a password and i
could not get into the machine. I finally got around to getting into the
machine and am at the main menu. Before i do anything, I want to back up
the machine. I have a couple of tapes.

I am not familiar with os/400 at all, the intention is to backup the
machine so in the event of a hardware failure I will be able to reinstall
and still have a licenced install.

I come from the sgi land, usually from the prom there is the HINV command
to give a nice hardware inventory of the machine, is there a similar
command in the ibm world? I want to find what options are installed, cpu
and memory details, etc.

Any advice on what to do from here is much appreciated. I just want to get
the thing backed up and rest assured that if the drives fail i can
reinstall the os and it have its license.

Microcomputer and misc for sale

2017-04-05 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Many people have been asking for details on the Hp gear. Here are some
pictures of everything.

https://postimg.org/gallery/wdgbt8lm/

I have powered up the machine and it boots up to hp basic. I never fired up
any of the external drive enclosures or the printer. If someone wants to
tell me how to test the external drives, I am more than willing to do so to
verify that they are in working order.

I have gotten several inquiries on the HP gear. Not sure how to handle many
people wanting the same gear, now that i have some pictures up showing the
model numbers, ill see if people are still interested and what they are
willing to offer.

Microcomputer and misc for sale

2017-04-04 Thread devin davison via cctalk
Looking to make some space so i can work on some of the bigger gear i have
sitting around here. All this stuff was stored in a climate controlled
environment. I pick up interesting things whenever i can, be it at the
scrapyard, flea markets, etc, that is where most of this came from. I
worked in a computer shop for a while, a lot came from customers too, You
would be supersized what people would drag in.Fix it up... interest fades,
and then it starts looking like a museum.

3-4 commodore 64's. many 1541 disk drives, documentation, software.
Datassete in tattered box.

trs 80 coco - bent corner, works

Vic20 1525 graphics plotter / printer.

apple IIc - works - keyboard sticks sometimes

commodore 64 1702 monitor

zenith portable / luggable, complete, second drive sticks/ jams. Boots to
dos.

Boxed copy of ms dos 6.22 upgrade

boxed borland C++

boxed masm

like new in box tandy 1400 FD computer. excellent shape. Will not power on
from wall jack, tapped into the 6v battery lead and it works fine, some
kind of power jack issue. charging jack works intermittantly.

Atari portfolio

commmodore amiga 500 with keyboard. Never bothered with it. Has scsi
controller, no hard drive. Ordered a floppy to boot it to workbench, it did
so. God knows where that floppy is now though...

Hp 9000 desktop with related peripherals. boots to hp basic.
External enclosure, hard drive and floppy drive
External enclosure, dual floppy drive.
keyboard
Tiny inkjet printer

(all the above gear is uses HPIB connection. Plan was to get this all wired
into my logic analyzer and other bench instruments, never bothered)

This list may be updated in the next week or so as i find more, feel free
to ask questions or inquire on pricing. Not looking to strike it rich, but
not just giving it away either.

Im shifting my focus to mainly DEC and SGI gear. I love picking up the
microcomputer stuff, but i just do not need that many machines. I have a
nice commodore 64, that should be enough for now.

That all being said, if anyone has a vax 780 for sale in florida.

Re: Aquired PDP 11/23

The thing on the top has to do with the tape drives, i think it is the
controller. the drives plug into it, and from there it wires into a serial
port, at least as far as i can tell. Much appriciated on the offer to trade
for the memory board.
It has been slow going with my 11/34, if i can get this machine going
first, i would like to image my rl01/02 disks and see if there is anything
interesting on them. Are dectape II tapes expensive? can you just format a
more common higher capacity tape down to the dectape II format? i have a
bunch of the newer cartriges, they do fit.

Aquired PDP 11/23

2017-03-12 Thread devin davison via cctalk
This past week I managed to pick up a pdp 11/23. Excited to finally have a
qbus system, it is quite small compared to my 11/34.

Attached are some pictures showing what i picked up. I am in the process of
stress testing the power supply before turning it on. The whole machine was
quite dirty and is being cleaned out as well. A whole corner of the machine
corroded away, thankfully there is a metal shop around the corner with a
press, I am going to replace the corroded sides.
