I’m in Barnsley which is close to Sheffield. Where in Sheffield is it as I
possibly go pick it up really soon if you want.

[cctalk] Re: OT: Ham Radio

2023-07-09 Thread jake utley via cctalk
Threes this discord server where there is a nice ham community but most of the
groups I’ve found are on Facebook.

It’s fun to combine both hobbies like I’ve been computer controlling one of my
old rigs with a apple 2 and using a C64 in conjunction as a rtty terminal. So
many people take joy from seeing what crazy things I do next.

[cctalk] Research machines RM 380

2023-02-27 Thread jake utley via cctalk
I’ve been restoring a RM380 I picked up not long ago and it’s been good news
and bad news. All the cards are in wonderful condition and the case is
presentable however the two BASF 6106 floppy drives are highly corroded and
probably won’t work again but this isn’t what I’m wondering, the original
supply is a little rough but looks tone perfectly restorable with the exception
of the key lock been stuck (problem to solve later) and I can get all the parts
needed to replace the three filters but it is a 70s linear supply and if my
s-100 experience has told me anything they might not be the most reliable. What
would you all recommend restoring it and keeping it original or fitting some
modern SMPS in its place. It is a low serial number as well (691) but saying I
want it to be reliable I’m torn.

[cctalk] Re: SDF had put a PDP-10 on the Internet

2023-02-08 Thread jake utley via cctalk
I would say it is newly built as the pcb substrate looks nothing like vintage
stock. On first glance it’s a impressive achievement reverse engineering the
PDP10 cards and then getting it online

[cctalk] Re: Diablo series 30 or Dec RK03

2023-01-08 Thread jake utley via cctalk
I got the 8L pretty cheap on eBay a few years back after it had been stripped
for parts so it’s been a long restoration project this is why I’m so attached
to it. Now that I’ve learnt that for the L I won’t be running anything other
than paper tape I’m ok with that as I do like the limitations. I think I’ll
stop the search to add mass storage to the 8 and focus 100% on the data general
systems which I prefer over Dec as then I don’t have to deal with many many
flip chip cards

The nova a 800/1200 series machine and thank you for mentioning about the 8L
drives. I’m hesitant to sell or trade it because it does kind of have
sentimental value as the first machine I got and especially since it has such a
interesting history (nuclear power plant in France). Since those drives for the
8 are so unobtainable I think I’ll just keep it as the basic system with a
teletype and also so I’m not having to swap drives between systems every time I
want to use it

[cctalk] Diablo series 30 or Dec RK03

2023-01-07 Thread jake utley via cctalk
Hello everyone I’m a young collector (18) of 60s and 70s minicomputers and
micros. I have been restoring a PDP-8L and would love to find ether a Diablo
series 30 or Dec RK03 removable cartridge drive to go with this system. I am in
the uk South Yorkshire to be precise and would love any leads anyone could
provide on where I could find one would very much appreciated. If nobody know
where one of these drives can be located any means of mass storage for a pdp 8L
and data general nova system will be appreciated since I want to move my
collection forward and have the systems set up with full period setups.

Thanks very much in advance.
