Thank you very much indeed.

That was indeed the problem.
I was playing with an ipv6 application some time ago,
and I did not notice that it appended many lines to /etc/hosts
(actually just on my server, but I later copied this /etc/hosts
to my other machines without looking at it).

My server is running under CentOS-5.3 .
My laptop is running under Fedora-11.

Actually, I do use the EPEL repository on the server,
and this uses the same fedoraproject site,
so the same problem arises there.

As long as a player supports mass storage mode (which the Fuze claims to),

You are correct. The init script checks the kernel command line
(/proc/cmdline) for the crashkernel line. If it's not present, it will
fail to initialize.

"wget" is resolving it to the wrong IP... (???)

Do you have something strange in /etc/hosts?

What is your /etc/resolv.conf like?

Can you try to use "curl" instead of "wget" to see if it resolves right?

Also, use "curl -v http://..."; to see to which IP you are connecting.

As the problem is in domain names, I would say it's either /etc/hosts
or a DNS cache, so sniffing the network won't probably give you many
clues... Does your Windows machine use different resolvers than your
Linux machine?

Re: [CentOS] Network guru please help: baffled by missing file

2009-07-17 Thread Filipe Brandenburger
Hi,

It's a problem with the mirror you are using (209.132.176.122), it
seems to be bogus or out of sync:

On Fri, Jul 17, 2009 at 08:14, Timothy Murphy wrote:

I am getting mirror 209.132.176.120 (and some others), which seems to
be working OK:

> $ wget https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink
> --12:54:34-- https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink

I see you also tried to access the IP directly (wget
http://66.35.62.166/mirrorlist) but that does not work probably
because the server uses virtual hosts and the default virtual host is
probably not the one you want. It's possible to work around that by
using --header 'Host: mirrors.fedoraproject.org' in the wget command
line.

For example, the same host I used above:

> $ wget --header 'Host: mirrors.fedoraproject.org'
> --12:56:07-- http://209.132.176.120/metalink

> 100%[===>] 53  --.-K/s   in 0s
>
> 12:56:08 (3.94 MB/s) - `metalink' saved [53/53]

And the one you are using:

> $ wget --header 'Host: mirrors.fedoraproject.org'
> --12:56:12-- http://209.132.176.122/metalink
> Connecting to 209.132.176.122:80... connected.
> HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
> 12:56:12 ERROR 404: Not Found.

To work around this issue, I suggest you add a line with
"209.132.176.122 mirrors.fedoraproject.org" to your /etc/hosts, and
also contact the Fedora project to inform them that this specific
mirror is bad... You might also try to flush your DNS cache to see if
you get a new IP for that domain.

On July 13 I switched to the older version of the kernel but still crashed
that night. I am now
back to 2.6.18-92.1.22 kernel but didn't have a chance to run backups as
our
admin system is being upgraded.

Note that our remote backups are done over the network with ssh logins. All
our
logins are ssh, and crashes that I see on some users are probably related to
ssh or networking
as I know that nothing special was done at that time. My guess that it is
ssh/network related.

This is I dual processor Xeon machine (i686) running Xen kernel. I noticed
on some other lists
that people are complaining about crashes caused by Intel e1000 network
device on 5.3, something
that my system has.

Base on last output, I would start to look on the process that was invoke by
ljubica and vmarko, you might find something from there.

Anyways, is your server running any DB process? You might also look at the
server history on when this problem start to happened and investigate any
updates that you or the others have done prior to the problem. SAR command
can help.

Re: [CentOS] CentOS on IBM Bladecenter HS21

2009-07-17 Thread Andrei F
Hi,

I've configured my servers as described here:

http://prefetch.net/blog/index.php/2009/07/06/using-kdump-to-get-core-files-on-fedora-and-centos-hosts/

When I try to start the kdump service via service kdump start, I get the
following warnings:

[r...@lweb2 boot]# service kdump start
No kdump initial ramdisk found.[WARNING]
Rebuilding /boot/initrd-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5kdump.img
Starting kdump:
[FAILED]

First of all I like the idea of automatically building an initrd image with
kdump support, but
I also need MPP support. Just to give you an example, this is how both
machines are booting up:

title RDAC CentOS (2.6.18-92.1.22.el5) with MPP
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
initrd /mpp-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5.img

At this point I'm wondering how to generate an initrd image with mpp & kdump
support.

Also /var/log/messages gives me this:

Jul 17 11:42:27 lweb2 kdump: No crashkernel parameter specified for running
kernel
Jul 17 11:42:27 lweb2 kdump: failed to start up

I assume that once the server is being rebooted with the correct kernel
arguments like
crashkernel=1...@16m and the correct initrd with mpp & kdump support the
service
should start just fine.

Regards,

-Andrei

Does it work if you use http:// instead of https:// with the same URL?

I don't think so.
My server is connected to an ADSL modem which links it to my ISP.
I don't know if the modem (Cayman 3341) could be acting as a proxy server?

I'm running shorewall on the server,
but I get the same response when I turn it off.

As I said, it seems to me that mirrors.fedoraproject.org
for some reason does not like my system.
I can connect to this site, and download files from it,
eg index.html, static/css/fedora.css, etc.
It is just the files mirrorlist and metalink
which I cannot see.

I never get this problem in any other context, as far as I know.

It does work for me i get the mirrorlist when i request the url in a
browser. Try a different host (from the ip's below) as that is a round
robin address

mirrors.fedoraproject.org is an alias for wildcard.fedoraproject.org.
wildcard.fedoraproject.org has address 66.35.62.166
wildcard.fedoraproject.org has address 80.239.156.215

The mirrorlist entry in my Fedora-11 /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-update.repo
reads:
mirrorlist=https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=updates-released-

I no longer am using gallery 2 but awhile back I did it using the noarch
RPMs from Fedora 9.

However, I was running php 5.2.6 and not the 5.1.x that CentOS ships
with. I do not believe that makes a difference.

If I recall - I also had to install php-Smarty from Fedora 9 (also a
noarch rpm).

F9 I think is EOL - so try the F10 noarch RPMs. Look in F10 updates first.

Where it happens with me is the i386 build on a Thinkpad T20.
I'll have to check the driver.

It does not happen on my x86_64 running proprietary nvidia driver.
