Some research confirms this. Source [1] says Fedora 16+ uses Grub2, and
Source [2] says RHEL 7 will be based on Fedora 19.

I used to do something similar to this, except that in this case I'd
assume "3.9/os/" and "3.9/updates/" are static, so I'd probably combine
the RPMS from these 2 trees together (in a subdirectory called "RPMS"
for instance), and then run:

repomanage -o RPMS | xargs rm -f

so that the outdated/superseded packages would be removed from the
collection before running createrepo.

ACPI, but not ACPI 2.0?
I'll see what the BIOS claims next time I reboot.

Not at all sure how to update the BIOS.
Don't even know whether my machine has a mechanism for updating the BIOS.

No. I've never been into gaming.

If I needed to do this, I would mirror the 3.9/os/ and 3.9/updates/
directory (and others if you need them)

Then I would create my directory as well in the same tree or even put my
files in 3.9/updates/ as we are no longer putting files there anyway.

Then I would rerun createrepo on the updates/i386 and updates/x86_64

If it works, by all means use it.

CentOS has no "supported hardware" anyway

That is there because something about that hardware trips the RHEL
support flag ... so you can't get support from Red Hat for that hardware :)

As other posts to the list have pointed out ... look at:

http://wiki.centos.org/hardware/

and

for more info

Yes, it can be done. I did it a while back, but don't remember all the details.

I merged the updates into the distribution, plus a few yum-related packages
from centosplus. I *think* I hacked up a comps.xml to create the yum metadata
with createrepo, but that's only half the story. You also need to update the
hdlist and hdlist2 files with /usr/lib/anaconda-runtime/pkgorder and
genhdlist. There are pitfalls. Best thing is to build a 3.9 vm from just
the base package and then create all the metadata files on it from the
 combined repo.

wild guess... that CPU is newer than the kernel in use by the
installer, and it doesn't have any microcode updates for it.

also might be that X doesn't have the HD4600 graphics driver used by
that chip. its quite possible a yum update brings in newer stuff that
resolves this.

I understand that too, but nothing you can do is going to make it last
forever, and power use is a cost if it is on all the time. And I'd
recommend something that can virtualize 64-bit OS's (basically
anything since a core-2 duo, I think) if you like to try out different

[CentOS] Most efficient way to create a CentOS 3 test VM

2013-11-26 Thread Warren Young
I'm about to create a new CentOS 3 VM for testing, since we still have a
bunch of deployed machines running that OS.

(Don't yell at me about using old OSes. These machines won't get
"un-deployed" until they fall over dead of natural causes. Until the
last one dies, we need test and build VMs around to service them.)

I have the CentOS 3.9 *.iso files plus a local cache of RPMs against 3.9
that is probably incomplete relative to the vault[*].

It seems wasteful to install the last published version of the OS, then
scp over my local update RPMs, freshen from those, *then* check with the
vault for yet more updates.

What I'm hoping for is some way to get a "CentOS 3.10", being 3.9 with
the vault updates directory contents merged in.

Is there a straightforward way to do that, or is schlepping around
folders full of RPMs actually the best way to go?

do debug stuff like that. Now, replacing it with something new would

You may want to check the bios for some settings. I recently fixed some
issues with my server system here at home (gen 1 i7 920) by turning ACPI
2.0 off. I first replaced the power supply but that did improve the

Sounds like CentOS hits something somewhere that FC14 hits more rarely.

I think that I've seen used laptops for about as
much and I would not have to pay for installation.

F14 crashed once since CentOS started crashing.

Yeah, probably better to get something that is likely to run for 10
more years than to squeeze another year out of something old.

Like I said, I had one that ran clean for 3 days, then caught the
intermittent RAM error that was causing the problem. But, if I hadn't
already had a pile of similar RAM to swap in, I would probably have
been ahead to trash the old box anyway. It just happened to be the
only large tower case I had with an 8 port SATA controller and room
for a lot of disks and I like using it for backups.

I'd looked at .../Xorg.0.log , but until now, not ~/.xsession-errors :

To be clear this is the one for CentOS.
F14, what I'm running right now, has a different home directory.
Is the "... failed" message crash-worthy?

Yes. It's the only computer I've owned with
either a hard drive or more than 8K of memory.

I've used others.

What's this "we"?
I've opened the case three times and done four things:
I've installed a new hard drive. The old one is still working.
I've zapped the original video card, AGP.
I've blown dust.
I've had someone else install new RAM.

When I get up the nerve to open it again,
I'll blow dust and look for misplaced intestines.

In the mean time, I'll boot back to CentOS and see how long it lasts.

After rebooting, it crapped out twice in half an hour.

On further, further investigation, it looks like according to the mcelog install
guide at http://www.mcelog.org/installation.html, I could "roll my own" for
32-bit
CentOS 6:

"For bad page offlining you will need a 2.6.33+ kernel or a 2.6.32 kernel with
the soft offlining capability backported (like RHEL6 or SLES11-SP1)"
"The kernel has to have CONFIG_X86_MCE enabled. For 32bit kernels you
need at least a 2.6,30 kernel."

The current kernel I am running is 2.6.32-358.23.2, but I can't tell whether it
has CONFIG_X86_MCE enabled. How can I find this out?

Thanks,
-G.

[CentOS] Filesystem labeling confusion or mess up

2013-11-26 Thread Götz Reinicke - IT Koordinator
Hi,

I do have an iscsi storage with two raidsets. I'm logged in to the
target and get two devices: /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc.

After formatting the devices with ext4 I realised, that I had used a
wrong label, so I tried to relabel the devices.

But now I'm confused:

doing a e2label /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc returns always the same label name
for both devices.

so I did "e2label /dev/sdb students" and "e2label /dev/sdc staff" and
now mounting the devices shows the same filesystem under sdb and sdc!

Looks like sdc (an empty device) is gone...

Any suggestions or explanations?

Thanks and best regards . Götz

Re: [CentOS] Machine check events

2013-11-26 Thread Glenn Eychaner
Further investigation seems to indicate that these events should be handled
by "mcelog" or "mced". However, there is no /var/log/mcelog, nor do I have a
"mcelog" or "mced" binary, nor does yum seem to contain anything related
(based on "yum whatprovides '*/mcelog'" and similar queries).

Thus, I still don't know what to do with these errors. Ignore them? I am
running 32-bit CentOS 6.4 (legacy software reasons).

I used to use Coova Chilli http://coova.org/CoovaChilli for that.
But you still have to setup all the AAA (FreeRadius+DAtabase).

For information:

CentOS is a rebuild of Red Hat's RHEL product. CentOS removes references
to Red Hat, in this case a reference to redhat.com. If you substitute
'redhat.com' for 'centos.org' you will get the original URL rather than
a page not found error:

http://www.redhat.com/hardware
