Or signal interference. Where is the antennae located on the server? Ran
into signal issues with antennae which were tucked behind the server before.

The 'older linux' is "Lucid Puppy Revitalized as 5.2.8.7 - December,
2016" http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=90461 It's a
low-memory end-user distro, targetted at really old, low-memory
machines. It can do simple compiles, but it's not a development
environment suitable for building Pale Moon, which is an independant
Firefox fork.

Thanks for the pointer; I didn't know about that URL. I'll try to get
6.5 up and running as a VM.

> Otherwise, use a CentOS 6.5 VM to do the build (with the usual caveats

That seems the best route. As it was, even on 6.8, I had to
"yum install autoconf213", and manually downloand tarballs and build
from source yasm, python 2.7, and gcc 4.9.4. I'm not a programmer, but
I can "./configure --with-options && make && make install".  It's no
more difficult than "yum install ".

I realize that CentOS 6.5 is "not safe for surfing", but I'll be using
it only for doing builds. The build will not be statically linking in
libraries, so CentOS security holes are not a problem. Lucid Puppy has
an "ancient" glibc, but has backported patches for the "Ghost" exploit,
etc. Ditto for ssl and other exploits.

We have seen this with user accounts that have defined LD_LIBRARY_PATH
causing library conflicts with gnome.

Another thing to try is installing proprietary video drivers for your video

[CentOS] how to troubleshoot GUI issue?

2017-01-09 Thread Dave Burns
Hello,
I'm using a recent install of centos 7, no GUI customizations that I
recall. When I log in using the GUI it accepts my password and the mouse
appears on a black screen, like it is preparing the desktop, but the
desktop never appears. If I hit control-alt-f4 and log in using the command
line, and then execute startx, Everything seems to work perfectly.

What sort of troubleshooting should I do to figure out what is stalling?
I'm not at all familiar with this aspect of things.

thanks,

Well, I have no idea what the control is for the OS they are using.
Ideally, all the modifications made to that OS were done via RPMs that
are in a separate repository .. and that separate repository is being
maintained where reproducible installs can be done. If that is the
case, then he can build all software against that controlled repository.

Of course, if someone builds against an older repo, like CentOS-6.5,
that will entail potential security issues. That is usually WHY
packages have been upgraded. So, in general, the OP is likely already
at risk with security issues. If you want to go outside the bounds of
what CentOS provides, you will have to do a whole lot of work to
maintain security.

And the package he wants to use (gtk2-23 or less) is not going to run on
an up2date CentOS system as everything gtk will have been built to work
with the latest version and will likely NOT run with the older version.
That would likely be all gnome based things.

So, I would recommend that they rebuild their software to use CentOS-6.8
and use that as the base of their environment.

But what is not likely to happen is a very much lower version of gtk2 in
any CentOS version.

Thanks,
Johnny Hughes

tenes esta diseñado para una version anterior de php respecto a la que
tenes instalada en el nuevo servidor.
Es tan simple como corregir y utilizar las funciones correctas para la
nueva version y listo.

Si necesitas te puedo dar una mano.

Saludos.

I'm redirecting some things to www.fbi.gov as well as 127.0.0.1 here,
plus using mod_geoip, ipset, and the mother of all network level
blacklists in ipset. One large list that cut the number of attacks was
blocking ALL Amazon AWS services. That reduced attacks by at least half.

(1) For national infrastructures, a "parallel" Internet-type
communications network, totally isolated from the real Internet.

(2) Governments should educate their country's computer people to
recognise vulnerabilities and how to block them; too many self-declared
"komputar xperts" haven't a clue about robust security.

At run time, the application will use whatever shared libs exist on the
target platform - not those from the build platform, so I'm guessing, as
long as the target OS has security fixes back ported, then it will be OK ...

[CentOS] Reliable way of having both LAN and WIFI on headless box

2017-01-09 Thread Gary Stainburn
Once again I am building a headless Centos 7 box that needs to reliably be on
both the LAN and WIFI network at all times. Amongst other things it's going
to be an AirPrint bridge enabling IPads to print to printers on a different
VLAN.

I have asked about this before and got a solution working using nmtui to set
up both the LAN and WIFI interface, and activate them. However, the WIFI
link is unreliable. Sometimes it doesn't activate, or after a while
de-activates. Sometimes it doesn't even appear in nmtui to enable me to
activate it.

Can anyone help me with how I can set up a more reliable server.

Thanks

You can use mock chroots in sandbox mode to manually get whatever
install you want, or if all the things you want are in (for example)
CentOS 6.5, you can point your config files for mock to use 6.5 repo
from http://vault.centos.org/ and build against that.

I suggest building the software using mock chroots, built against older
versions of CentOS. You can set up custom chroots in /etc/mock/.

For example, I have staged versions of CentOS7 (with staged yum repos) that I
use to build kernel modules, so I can build the latest version of OpenAFS
against kernels other than the latest, since our environment’s kernels don’t
get updated immediately but I will still need to have OpenAFS kmods. You could
do something similar, only pointing the yum repos at vault.centos.org
 repos.

Re: [CentOS] How to downgrade gtk2 libs in CentOS 6.8?

2017-01-09 Thread James Pearson

Walter Dnes wrote:

Hi all. I'm using a CentOS 6.8 VM to do volunteer builds for an open
source project. I want to build Pale Moon with a gtk2 library older
than 2.24, to allow people with older linuxes to run it. Short summary,
if built against version gtk2-2.24 and/or higher, the binary will use a
function that does not exist in gtk2-2.23 and lower. Net result is that
the program dies with an "undefined symbol:" error for people with
machines lower than gtk2-2.24. Yes, before you ask, they do get
security fixes backported.

The hits from my Google search suggested...

yum downgrade gtk2

   The response from yum was...

Only Upgrade available on package: gtk-2.24.23-8.e16.i686
Nothing to do

   Are there ways around this?

One way would be to do the build on the same OS as the 'older linux' ?

However, CentOS 6.5 shipped with gtk2-2.20.1-4.el6, CentOS 6.6 and above
shipped with gtk-2.24 - see http://vault.centos.org/6.5/os/

You _might_ be able to downgrade gtk-2 to that shipped with CentOS 6.5 -
but I guess there may be a myriad of dependencies on gtk-2.24 that
prevent this on a CentOS 6.8 install ...

Otherwise, use a CentOS 6.5 VM to do the build (with the usual caveats
that 6.5 is old/out-of-date/etc)?

Hmm -- I didn't realize that libvirt shipped their own source rpms.

There seem to be two distinct classes of users: those who want the
newest thing all the time, and those who want to stick with what's
working as long as possible before upgrading. On the whole, CentOS
seems to be more focused on the second class of people. So I was
looking to do a single version bump that we could stick with until the
next time there's a compelling reason to update. Libvirt 2.2 the most
recent one used in any Fedora release. As such, in terms
of"aftercare" like bug fixes, it will probably get better and for
longer than other releases. So it seemed like a good option.

I'm open to other suggestions, but "update every release" is probably
not suitable for the main Xen repo. I wouldn't be opposed if someone
wanted to step up and maintain a repo themselves, though. :-)

2017-01-09 Thread Myyrä , Timo
Hi,

I have trouble setting up chrooted SFTP for our user.
I got the basic SFTP chroot working, user is chrooted to its home
directory, I've added /home/userb/etc directory with dummy passwd, group
and localtime files.

The problem is that instead of only accessing its own files, I need the
user to be able to remove another users files.
I have web application which runs as different user, the sftp user is
member of the web users group. I then setup bind mounts from web users data
dir to chrooted users home directory.

The chrooted user can't remove any files in the directory owned by another
user. The directory permissions are 0775 so they should allow the access.
If I don't use chroot I can remove the file just fine so it seems to be
something on the chroot that limits the access.

I tried to add simple directory, checked the permissions and tried to
delete file and it failed as well so the bind mount should be the issue.

Here's sample output:
# cat etc/{passwd,group}
webapp-user:x:5020:5020::/home/webapp-user:/sbin/nologin
chroot-user:x:5029:1::/home/chroot-user:/sbin/nologin
root:x:0:0:not really root:::
sftp-chroot:x:1:chroot-user
webapp-user:x:5020:chroot-user
# ls -lR
.:
total 0
drwx--x--- 2 root sftp-chroot 61 Jan 5 07:34 etc
drwxr-x--- 2 chroot-user sftp-chroot 6 Nov 20 2015 failed
drwxr-x--- 2 chroot-user sftp-chroot 16 Jan 5 07:46 input
drwxrwxr-x 2 webapp-user webapp-user 98 Jan 5 07:18 intranet

./etc:
total 16
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 55 Jan 5 07:34 group
-rw-r- 1 root root 1883 Jan 5 06:45 localtime
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 172 Jan 5 06:51 passwd
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 105 Jan 5 06:46 passwd~

./failed:
total 0

./input:
total 0

./intranet:
total 72
-rw-rw-r-- 1 chroot-user sftp-chroot 0 Jan 5 07:02 test1.txt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 webapp-user webapp-user 0 Jan 5 07:02 test2.txt

So why can't I remove the intranet/test* files inside sftp chroot even if
the chroot-user is member of webapp-user group and the directory itself has
group permissions?

Did you enable the testing repo?

yum --enablerepo=centos-virt-xen-testing update

[CentOS] How to downgrade gtk2 libs in CentOS 6.8?

2017-01-09 Thread Walter Dnes
Hi all. I'm using a CentOS 6.8 VM to do volunteer builds for an open
source project. I want to build Pale Moon with a gtk2 library older
than 2.24, to allow people with older linuxes to run it. Short summary,
if built against version gtk2-2.24 and/or higher, the binary will use a
function that does not exist in gtk2-2.23 and lower. Net result is that
the program dies with an "undefined symbol:" error for people with
machines lower than gtk2-2.24. Yes, before you ask, they do get
security fixes backported.

The hits from my Google search suggested...

yum downgrade gtk2

  The response from yum was...

Only Upgrade available on package: gtk-2.24.23-8.e16.i686
Nothing to do

  Are there ways around this?
