[CentOS] Optimizing Windows virtual machines

2020-06-28 Thread Georgios
Hi!

Im following the instructions found on RHEL 8 documentation.
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html-single/configuring_and_managing_virtualization/index#enabling-hyper-v-enlightenments_optimizing-windows-virtual-machines-on-rhel-8

And when I'm trying to pass the command

sudo virt-xml Windows10 --edit --features
hyperv_relaxed=on,hyperv_vapic=on,hyperv_spinlocks=on,hyperv_spinlocks_
retries=8191,hyperv_vpindex=on,hyperv_runtime=on,hyperv_synic=on,hyperv
_stimer=on,hyperv_frequencies=on

I get the following error.

ERRORUnknown --features options: ['hyperv_vpindex',
'hyperv_runtime', 'hyperv_stimer', 'hyperv_frequencies']

I can manually add the options on the xml file but i was wondering if
the feature arguments are removed and they have no effect or if I'm
missing something.

Thanks in advance

ps.Im running centos 8.1 since 8.2. broke my wifi.

[CentOS] iwlwifi problem after Centos 8.2 update

2020-06-16 Thread Georgios
Hi!
I get high cpu usage on my laptop (yes im running Centos on my laptop)
after my last update.

At the beginning i though it was libvrtd but after stopping it gnome
monitor keep showing high cpu usage although i couldnt find the app
that was responsible for it with the top command.

I searched my log files and I saw alot of iwlwifi message.

I had to turn off wifi in order to stop high cpu usage.

Any ideas how to solve it?

Thanks in advance!

dmesg command gives me the following output:

No idea. I stop looking after I manage to pass the arguments I wanted
to the kernel.
If you find the problem send an email on the list.
It would be good to know what is wrong.

Re: [CentOS] C8.1 Grub problem

2020-04-06 Thread Georgios
Hi there!
I had a similar problem recently with grub. No idea why it doesnt work.
Try using grubby instead of grub2-mkconfig if you want the system to
keep your kernel parameters between boots.

Something like:

sudo grubby --args="i915.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=i915" --update-
kernel=ALL

Hope it helps!
Have a nice day!

Thanks Jyrki and Leroy.

I tried to use cockpit but virt-manager seems easier.
Is there a config file for cockpit? Where is it?

I think i might have solve it.

For some reason grub2-mkconfig doesnt work. (Have no idea why)

I manage to solve it with grubby.

sudo grubby --args="intel_iommu=on" --update-kernel=ALL

For some reason it works. I dont know if it works if my kernel gets
upgraded.

[CentOS] IOMMU and kernel

2020-04-03 Thread Georgios
Hi.
Im trying to set intel_iommu=on on kernel parameters at grub but for
some reason it doesnt work.

I edit /etc/default/grub file and i add the parameter.

then i run grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/centos/grub.cfg and then i
reboot.

when i run virt-host-validate i get

QEMU: Checking if IOMMU is enabled by kernel: WARN (IOMMU appears to be
disabled in kernel. Add intel_iommu=on to kernel cmdline arguments)

when i edit the grub menu durring boot and i put intel_iommu=on and the
i run again virt-host-validate i get

QEMU: Checking if IOMMU is enabled by kernel: PASS

any ideas?

I tried editing other variables like GRUB_TIMEOUT and it seems to me
that changes are applied.

Thanks in advance

Re: [CentOS] Centos 8 Mate?

2019-10-18 Thread Georgios
you should give gnome3 some time.
Here is the thing.
At the beginning i disliked gnome3. I tried it for 1 or 2 days and then
i turned to xfce.

I started using gnome3 when one of my friends said that it is usable if
you get use to it. I also considered the fact that desktop environments
like xfce have a small development team and they delay to transits to
new technologies.

I gave a try to gnome3 for a couple of weeks and it works fine.
I dont even considering changing back.

You can also use VLC through flatpak.

Re: [CentOS] Browser doesnt work

2019-10-15 Thread Georgios
Well kind of.

for example i had to do the following stuff for my laptop

-add epel repository so i can install keepassxc
-manual install eclipse
-enable rpmfusion in order to have
--media support on my browser and
--install totem codecs in order for it to play video files

With flatpak i think centos is more desktop friendly.
The rest of the apps where installed through flatpak so it was quite
easy. Most of these apps arent on Centos repositories so without
flatpak it would be a bit difficult.
Also with flatpak you can have newer versions of the apps that could be
a problem.

Besides that i have to say.

flatpak itself is really old and it doesn't support my yubikey.
Thats the reason i had to install keepassxc through epel repository and
not flatpak.
I do hope flatpak gets updated on a future point release.

Another problem i currently have is that evolution after suspense
sometimes it seems to brake. It happened 2 times last weeks but i could
not reproduce.

I previous had debian 9 and 10.
If i compare these 2 i have to say.

Centos 8 had a bit less configuration for laptop compared with debian 9
but a bit more compared to debian 10.

I guess it all depends what you want to do with your laptop.
For basic usage it seems fine.

Anyway for the time being it seems usable.
But i wouldn't recommend it to someone who use linux for the first
time.
I would suggest ubuntu or something like this.

[CentOS] Browser doesnt work

2019-10-13 Thread Georgios
Hello.

Im new on Centos
I recently installed Centos 8 and i have the following problem with my
browser

I cant play media on the browser.

for example i cant play.
https://twitter.com/Ffs_OMG/status/1183397555914366976

Or i cant listen shows or songs on mixcloud.

for example
https://www.mixcloud.com/parapolitika-parapolitika/%CE%B3%CE%B9%CF%89%CF%81%CE%B3%CE%BF%CF%83-%CF%80%CE%B1%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%85%CE%BB%CE%B7%CF%83_%CF%80%CE%B1%CF%81%CE%B1%CF%80%CE%BF%CE%BB%CE%B9%CF%84%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%B1901_24-5/

i get the message

"Sorry - your browser is not supported.

Please update your browser or install another such as Google Chrome.
Mixcloud requires HTML5 audio with MP3 and MP4 support."

I suspect that these 2 problems relate.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance!

[CentOS] Centos & media codec

2019-10-07 Thread Georgios
Hello im trying to play some videos with totem on CentOS 8.

I get the following message in the command line.

"totem
** Message: 17:22:06.269: Missing plugin: gstreamer|1.0|totem|MPEG-1
Video decoder|decoder-video/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)1,
systemstream=(boolean)false (MPEG-1 Video decoder)

(totem:12230): Gtk-WARNING **: 17:22:06.270: Drawing a gadget with
negative dimensions. Did you forget to allocate a size? (node slider
owner GtkScale)
"

I also get the following message.

MPEG-4 Video (Simple Profile) decoder is required to play the file, but
is not installed.

Any ideas what i have to install in order to play it?

Thanks in advance!

Re: [CentOS] Centos 8: Multiple bugs with email/calendar

2019-10-01 Thread Georgios
First of all thanks for your fast reply.

Second.
The server im trying to use is https://dav.mailbox.org/caldav I dont
think its a problem with my configuration (although i can always be
wrong). I suspect a bug in evolution because sometimes it works.
Sometimes i manage to create an event sometimes i cant.

I started evolution from a terminal and i noticed that when i fail to
create an event i get the following message

"(evolution:26852): libecal-CRITICAL **: 11:45:50.282:
e_cal_component_alarm_set_description: assertion 'description->value !=
NULL' failed"

I tried without setting an alarm and i can create events with no
problem!!
So I filled a bug report https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=16507

Third.
I have no idea if its a configuration problem. Newer flatpak versions
work fine! I searched online and found this
https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/issues/3076

marked as enhancement!

ps.Im wondering if evolution in Centos is going to have 5+ year life-
cycle or if it gets upgraded earlier.

[CentOS] Centos 8: Multiple bugs with email/calendar

2019-10-01 Thread Georgios
Hi there!
I recently installed centos 8 on my laptop.

I have the following problems

1. I tried the use the default evolution 3.28.
The problem with 3.28 is that when i try to create an event i get the error
"Failed to create an event in the calendar “CalDAV : Calendar”"
"Cannot create calendar object: Failed to put data: HTTP error code 400
(Bad Request)"

2.I tried installing evolution from flatpak 3.34
Calendar works fine! BUT cant use my yubikey to read my encrypted emails :-(
For some reason flatpak seems unable to work with smartcards.
Had the same issue with keepassxc and yubikey

3.My third attempt was to use thunderbird from flatpak.
I installed thunderbird through flatpak to see if i could overcome the
flatpak yubikey problem.
Thunderbird starts but then crushes with the following message
"flatpak run org.mozilla.Thunderbird
Gtk-Message: 09:15:00.372: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module"
Gtk-Message: 09:15:00.372: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
Gtk-Message: 09:15:00.372: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module"
Gtk-Message: 09:15:00.372: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
"

I would prefer to use evolution than thunderbird.

Any ideas how to solve the calendar or flatpak and yubikey problem?

Thanks in advance!!!

[CentOS] LVM and thin snapshots

2019-09-27 Thread Georgios
Hi there!

Im new here.

Im trying to install Centos 8 on my laptop. I also want to have a
contingency plan in case something brakes.

My first thoughts were to use LVM.

The idea is that i would take multiple snapshots of the system during
the day/week and will keep them for a short time.

I read RHEL documentation about how lvm works and pretty much understand
how to manage the above scenario with LVM snapshots and encryption.
If i understood lvm snapshots will cause delay the system after multiple
snapshots. The best way to avoid it is using thin snapshots.

At rhel documentation it says that is possible for a non thin volume to
get a thin snapshots.

[Correct me if my above assumptions are wrong or if there is a better
solution for my purpose.]

So i created a group with 3 volumes groups and one thin pool.

Im trying to take a snapshot and i get the message.

"Cannot use writable LV as the external origin."

I read somewhere that i should change it to read only and then take a
snapshot. Although that would be a problem i just try it to see if it
works. Then i got the message

"Cannot use active LV for the external origin"

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance
