I don't know if this is still a problem, but in the past, CentOS was only writing the boot-loader on one of the RAID-disks. If this one would fail, the OS would not boot. Hi Robert, my old home server needed to much energy (~80VA) permanently, so I went for an https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-h3-plus/ The manufacturer is located in Korea and has dealers around the world. Put it in one of their cases https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-h3-case-type-1/ add two drives and you will have a system that consumes less than 20VA under load, less than 15VA idle. [CentOS] storage for mailserver
hi, I am planning to replace my old CentOS 6 mail server soon. Most details are quite obvious and do not need to be changed, but the old system was running on spinning discs and this is certainly not the best option for todays mail servers. With spinning discs, HW-RAID6 was the way to go to increase reliability and speed. Today, I get the feeling, that traditional RAID is not the best option for SSDs. I am reading that all RAID members in SSD-arrays age synchronously so that the risk of a massive failure of more than one disk is more likely than with HDDs. There are many other concerns like excessive write load compared to non-raid systems, etc. Is there any common sense what disk layout should be used these days? I have been looking for some kind of master-slave system, where the (one or many) SSD is taking all writes and reads, but the slave HDD runs in parallel as a backup system like in a RAID1 system. Is there any such system? Any thoughts? best regards Michael Schumacher ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

The reason I am asking the third question is that exchange is certainly not only a mail system. It offers a lot of other functionality like calendar and I don't know what. For me, it was an easy decision. More than 20 years ago my organization wanted to implement a mail system. Bottom line, if you are heading for a mail server system, go for Postfix, dovecot, etc. Btw., we NEVER lost a single mail. I still have mails from 1998 :-) Both paths may be suitable, but with Linux, you are pretty safe of nasty things that do not do as you want. Re: [CentOS] device in use after a reboot
Hi, So sd[ab] are two 300 GB disks, and sdc is the big storage. I think this is not so uncommon. In my experience this has to do with the initialization of PCIe controller cards. I assume you are using a RAID controller, right? I saw that with Areca RAID-controllers in the past as well with LSI-controller these days. I am using UUID for that purpose. Not really convenient, but safe. [CentOS] nfs4 problem in CENTOS6
Hi, This is slightly offtopic, but I have been trying to resolve that problem for two days now without much success. It looks like this may be something that works with CENTOS5, but not with CENTOS6! I have two machines, fileserver1 and server5. fileserver1 runs on CENTOS6 (virtualized, if this is important), server5 runs on Centos5. Both are running with the most recent updates. On server5, I entered [root@server5 ~]# mount -t nfs4 192.168.1.202:/ /mnt/nfs/fileserver1/root successfully and [root@server5 ~]# mount -t nfs4 192.168.1.202:/mnt/data /mnt/nfs/fileserver1/data returns: mount: pinging: prog 13 vers 4 prot tcp port 2049 and hangs. ctrl-c returns me to the prompt, but /mnt/data is not mounted. All of the servers I've installed have a few tools by default to make tests in this cases (tcpdump (wireshark if gui), iptraf, iptables/pf,netcat,sysinternals(windows),...) and have a monitoring packages (Nagios/Ntop) in other machine to obtain data. Sounds like a good idea. I will put some tools on the machines. again, thanks for your help! best regards --- Michael Schumacher PAMAS Partikelmess- und Analysesysteme GmbH Dieselstr.10, D-71277 Rutesheim Tel +49-7152-99630 Fax +49-7152-996333 Geschäftsführer: Gerhard Schreck Handelsregister B Stuttgart HRB 252024 ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
Re: [CentOS] strange network problem
Dear Juan Carlos, Are your netmask config Ok? Can you use wireshark to sniff traffic in the middle LANCOM -Wireshark/tcpdump-Xenserver and send me a trace? I couldn't make any further tests on that machine because I couldn't install any software on that machine because of the failing network. However, I took the opportunity and rebooted the machine last night. Guess what, everything is up and running again. Thanks for your assistance and sorry to the list for the disappeared problem. Reboot was no option through the week as this is a production machine under heavy load. -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen Michael Schumacher mailto:michael.schumac...@pamas.de ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
Re: [CentOS] strange network problem
Nobody having an idea? Hi, I am trying to fix a problem I have for about a week now. The environment is: --several independent servers with Centos5.4 on the latest patchlevel (example will be server2) All of them are working properly. --a machine with Xen installed to host some virtual machines (xenserver1) --domu servers on xenserver1 (crmserver1, winserver1) The whole network is connected with a Lancom router to a DSL line. Some days ago I noticed that server2 was updated properly, but xenserver1, crmserver1 and winserver were not updating the OS properly. They seemed to be cut off the internet. I can ping from all to all servers internally, I can ssh from all to all servers internally and I can browse the Internet from server2 successfully (using IP-numbers and hostnames), but xenserver1 and its domu clients could not connect to the internet. I checked the firewalls on xenserver, and crmserver1. They seemed to be OK and stopping them with etc/init.d/iptables stop didn't solve the problem. I can resolve hostnames: [r...@xenserver1 ~]# nslookup www.centos.org Server: 192.168.1.1 Address:192.168.1.1#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.centos.org Address: 72.232.194.162 but I cannot browse neither to elinks http://www.centos.org; nor to 72.232.194.162, however, I can ping www.centos.org successfully. the network routes seem to be OK : [r...@xenserver1 ~]# route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface 10.1.1.0* 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 eth1 192.168.122.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 virbr0 169.254.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U 0 00 eth0 192.168.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U 0 00 eth0 default LANCOM_1751_1.p 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0 (eth1 is a drbd interface) [r...@crmserver1 ~]# route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface 169.254.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U 0 00 eth0 192.168.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U 0 00 eth0 default LANCOM_1751_1.p 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0 Has anybody any clue where to look? best regards --- Michael Schumacher ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

Re: [CentOS] eSATA drive enclosure of a full PC?
John, On Sunday, February 21, 2010 you wrote: a bunch of vendors sell 5-in-3 sata hotswap adapters that hold 5 SATA drives in 3 HH external bays of a jumbo tower chassis. they seem to run about $100. each drive bay has its own sata port on the back of these. example of one of these, http://www.amazon.com/SUPERMICRO-Hot-Swap-Mobile-System-Cabinet/dp/B9ILU0 You may consider using this part: http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=2814 The disadvantage is that you have no quick-swap-possibility, but the cooling is better as in hot-swap cases. The box has nice vibe-stoppers so that you have no vibrations on the case. I have several of these boxes and the disks run at least 10C cooler compared to a hot-swap system. And they sell for less than 25$. best regards --- Michael Schumacher ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
Re: [CentOS] RAM errors after kernel-update
Hi, to finish that story: The error was actually produced by a faulty motherboard. Tyan replaced it without much trouble. Be advised that MEMTEST86+ couldn't find the problem. thanks for your immediate response. I will replace the board, but I am wondering what the error message actually means? Re: [CentOS] EDAC Kernel Panic 2.6.9-78 and above
Chris, I've got a production system running CentOS 4 that was rock solid until I upgraded from 2.6.9-55 to 2.6.9-78.0.13 (now running 2.6.9-89.0.11). The system now crashes intermittently after a few weeks. I finally caught the panic message : EDAC MC0: INTERNAL ERROR: channel-b out of range (4 = 4) Kernel panic - not syncing: MC0: Uncorrected Error Looking at the kernel changelog, I see that EDAC support was added for the Intel 5000 chipset in 2.6.9-68.20.EL which this server runs. Same issue here with a machine running centos 5.3. The problem began with a kernel update that introduced the 5000 chipset. See the thread RAM errors after kernel-update for more details. I couldn't solve the problem yet, but because the machine crashes every two days with this kernel, I had to boot an earlier kernel without chipset support. I'm trying to determine if this is a potential memory issue, or is this related to some other hardware item. Also considering disabling EDAC in the kernel (is noedac a valid option?) as a last resort. I will run memtest86+ on the server as soon as possible to check the memory, just formulating my game plan if it's something else. Don't use the memtest86+ version that comes with the centos ISO. There is a much newer version available from the authors website. Only the new version identifies the chipset correctly. -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen Michael Schumacher mailto:michael.schumac...@pamas.de ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

[CentOS] RAM errors after kernel-update
Hi, I updated a server yesterday from kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5xen to kernel 2.6.18-164.el5xen After rebooting, my message log is flooded every second or so with this error messages: Oct 6 14:52:20 xenserver1 kernel: EDAC MC0: UE row 0, channel-a= 0 channel-b= 1 labels -: NON-FATAL recoverable (Branch=0 DRAM-Bank=0 Buffer ID = 0 RDWR=Read RAS=0 CAS=0 NON-FATAL recovera ble Err=0x2000 (FB-DIMM Configuration Write error on first attempt)) and Oct 6 15:17:23 xenserver1 kernel: EDAC MC0: CE row 0, channel 0, label : Corrected error (Branch=0 DRAM-Bank=0 RDWR=Read RAS=0 CAS=0, CE Err=0x1 (Correctable Non-Mirrored Demand Data E CC)) The machine is a new Tyan S5397 mobo with 16GB Kingston RAM KVR667D2D4F5K2/8G Removing and replacing memory to different locations doesn't make any difference. After some digging, I noticed that the new kernel has added support for the i5400 chipset. I found some reference that the new kernel has this error reporting capability the old one hadn't. Question1: how many recoverable RAM errors are acceptable? Question2: The error appears always with the same id in the error message. Mobo problem? Question3: Are there any recommended BIOS settings to operate the RAM slower to see if the problem disappears? Question4: Any other proposals. Being located in Germany makes the just return it to the dealer proposal quite unattractive. best regards --- Michael Schumacher PAMAS Partikelmess- und Analysesysteme GmbH Dieselstr.10, D-71277 Rutesheim Tel +49-7152-99630 Fax +49-7152-996333 Geschäftsführer: Gerhard Schreck Handelsregister B Stuttgart HRB 252024 ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
Re: [CentOS] Remote backup of server
Martin, you may want to take a look on http://www.nongnu.org/storebackup/ I am using that program for some month now. It installs easily, runs over SSH connection, and saves a lot of space on the target machine by hard-linking identical files between various backups. on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 18:23 you wrote: Hello, I want mount directory of one server to another over internet. I was looking to NFS4, but there are no security mechanisms. I need encrypted connection using private key (something like SFTP). Or - if there is in CentOS repo (or EPEL) package, that can mount directory over internet using private key and make differential backup (like rdiff-backup).
