Here are some more information and a workaround. This is a know major flaw as reported on https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=522163. Since the previous kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5 is not up to date with security fixes and the current kernel 2.6.18-164.el5 isn't usable as a nfs server, I have installed kernel 2.6.18-165.el5.jtltest.87, you will find it in the bug report, as a workaround. This is not optimal cause I think this is a testing kernel for RHEL 5.5 (not 5.4!), but it seems to me the best choice as a kernel under CentOS 5.3 at the moment if you are running an nfs server. And only the nfs server needs this kernel to work, the clients can stay with the current kernel 2.6.18-164.el5. regards Olaf ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

[CentOS] No login with kernel 2.6.18-164.el5
Hello, since kernel 2.6.18-164.el5 no user could login any more from nfs client into his home directory on nfs server. The kde error message is: "The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE: Writing to $HOME directory (/home/) failed with the error 'Permission denied' KDE is unable to start." /home is exported with nfs4 (gss/krb5), the password is delivered by nis. Everything works fine if I reboot the nfs server into the previous kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5. Then it is completely irrelevant which kernel version the client has. So /home export by nfs4 works for client with kernel versions 2.6.18-164.el5 and 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5. If the nfs server runs under kernel 2.6.18-164.el5, the error messages for the user login process are (names for user, client and domain are replaced): /var/log/messages Sep 16 15:54:13 gdm[3122]: run_session_child: »~/.xsession-errors« konnte nicht geöffnet werden Sep 16 15:55:02 ntpd[2674]: synchronized to 192.168.0.1, stratum 14 Sep 16 15:57:14 gdm[3122]: run_session_child: »~/.xsession-errors« konnte nicht geöffnet werden /var/log/secure Sep 16 15:57:14 gdm[3122]: pam_unix(gdm:session): session opened for user by (uid=0) Sep 16 15:57:14 sudo: pam_unix(sudo:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= user= Sep 16 15:57:14 sudo: pam_krb5[7339]: authentication fails for '' (@): Authentication failure (Decrypt integrity check failed) Strange files under /home/$USER: ---xrw--wT 1 0 Jan 17 2038 SskWxq -- 1 0 Jan 17 2038 .xsession-errors The following user processes are running on login error: startkde ssh-agent dbus-launch dbus-daemon kdeinit dcopserver klauncher kded kcminit_startup kwrapper ksmserver regards Olaf ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

[CentOS] System freezes completely under kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5
Hello, is there a known problem with the new kernel for CentOS 5.3? Till today, my server works without any problems. But after updating to the new kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5 the system freezes completely with no more access by keyboard or over network. [CentOS] Nfs4 with kerberos freezing system
Hello, I have a CentOS 5.2 server that exports /home on the local network for 2 users by secure nfs4 with kerberos krb5p. The clients are a notebook and a desktop pc. The following error is always reproducible on all clients. If running the clients on high load, that means for example 5 firefox windows open and connected with www pages from the internet, installing the new qt development environmet on the nfs4 share from the 297 mb big qt-sdk-linux-x86-opensource-2009.01.bin file and copy a 649 mb iso image to the nfs4 share, the client is freenzing and a reboot is necessary. If running the clients on low load, than the system is stable for hours. In my opinion this is an error by an CentOS nfs package, cause this problem is reproducible with different kernels, different desktop environments and different clients. I don't think the error is caused by the server hardware, cause if running the same nfs setting with nfs version 3 and disabling nfs secure, the system is stable. I have test this with - latest CentOS 5.2 kernel and testing redhat kernel 2.6.18-133.el5 - kde and gnome - different clients and hardware Is anybody here successfully using nfs4/krb5p with CentOS 5.2? regards Olaf ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

Hello, if login as user I get the following error message in ~/.xsession-errors*: /etc/X11/xinit/Xsession: line 15: unask: command not found Changing 'unask' to 'umask' seems to fix it. Beagle is great, but it kills my performance under fedora core 6. This was version 2.13(?). So with version 2.18 and under CentOS I will give it a try. And I also think that resistance is really futile. ;-) regards Olaf ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
[CentOS] Searching for beagle
Hi, there was a message in the list at Fri 26 Oct 2007 21:13:58, that beagle was added to centos testing repo. But I could not find it there. Please could someone give me an advice. Thank's a lot! "We have added beagle-0.2.18, tomboy-0.8.1, and mono-1.2.4 to the CentOS-5 testing repo for both x86_64 and i386." Are there any experiences with beagle under centos 5? Is it usable now or will it slow down my desktop like it did under fedora core 6? regards Olaf ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

I'm afraid not. I can mount ntfs with write enabled by the console command above. But kde (Storage Media panel applet) always mounts the partion with ntfs module and never uses ntfs-3g. I think it's an kde problem but I don't know how to solve this. If I remove the ntfs module then kde still ignores ntfs-3g and doesn't mount the partition with an "unknown file system" error any more. regards Olaf ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
[CentOS] How to replace ntfs by ntfs-3g?
Hello, I can write to an ntfs partion if mounting it by hand with 'mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdf5 /mnt/xp'. But if I use the mount option from the kde Storage Media panel applet (kdebase-3.5.4-13.6.el5.centos) then the partion will be mounted without write support. So how to say kde and CentOS to use ntfs-3g and not ntfs? Maybe by changing some links? [CentOS] Searching an Scsi Controller for CentOS 5
Hello, does CentOs 5 supports an Adaptec AHA-2940W/2940UW scsi controller (pci)? Is this controller maybe supported by the aic7xxx driver? I want to install CentOS 5 on my desktop pc but the currently installed pci scsi controller for my scanners (drivers: 2x tmscsim, 1x advansys) are not supported by CentOS. So I am searching for something else. Thanks in advanced. regards Olaf ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
