Re: [CentOS] Centos 7 using cups with cups-lpd loaded getting print jobs from an Sco Unix lpd system
Centos users, I new to Centos 7 and my problem is the following: I am using my Centos 7 system as a print server in a warehouse. Using cups for the print queue's. Which I can print to the printers find from the Centos 7 machine. The hosting system is Sco Unix using lpd printing. This machine is in Illinois and the warehouse / Centos 7 machine is in Arizona. I have loaded "cups-lpd" using yum and it seems fine. I have also setup "/etc/xinetd.d/cups-lpd" Following is a "netstat -tanp |grep -i listen" tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1090/sshd tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1096/cupsd tcp0 0 127.0.0.1:250.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1671/master tcp6 0 0 :::515 :::* LISTEN 1095/xinetd tcp6 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 1090/sshd tcp6 0 0 :::631 :::* LISTEN 1096/cupsd tcp6 0 0 ::1:25 :::* LISTEN 1671/master I notice that "port 515" is only listening on tcp6 not tcp. Question: could this be my problem? and how can I get "port 515" to be listened to on tcp? my Sco Unix print queue "status" file says "waiting for gate to come up". I have had the local hardware person verify that the router is "port forwarding" port 515 to my Centos 7 system. Help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Re: [CentOS] Centos 7 yum search giving Could not retrieve mirrorlist
Centos main list, I am working on a Centos 7 system and trying to do the following. yum search cups-lpd I am getting the following Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=7&arch=x86_64&repo=os&infra=stock error was 12: Timeout on http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=7&arch=x86_64&repo=os&infra=stock: (28, 'Resolving timed out after 30382 milliseconds') One of the configured repositories failed (Unknown), and yum doesn't have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only safe thing yum can do is fail. There are a few ways to work "fix" this: 1. Contact the upstream for the repository and get them to fix the problem. 2. Reconfigure the baseurl/etc. for the repository, to point to a working upstream. This is most often useful if you are using a newer distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the packages for the previous distribution release still work). 3. Disable the repository, so yum won't use it by default. Yum will then just ignore the repository until you permanently enable it again or use --enablerepo for temporary usage: yum-config-manager --disable 4. Configure the failing repository to be skipped, if it is unavailable. Note that yum will try to contact the repo. when it runs most commands, so will have to try and fail each time (and thus. yum will be be much slower). If it is a very temporary problem though, this is often a nice compromise: yum-config-manager --save --setopt=.skip_if_unavailable=true Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base/7/x86_64 I am using cups on this Centos 7 machine. Which prints fine from the Centos to my print queue's However I have an Sco Unix system using lpd printing that I am trying to send print jobs to the Centos 7 system and those are not even getting to the system. I get message: waiting on queue to be enabled QUESTION FOR main list: Is the Centos 7 "yum" commands being worked on? When might this be fixed? Re: [CentOS] 10 Year old IT Infrastructure
Thanks to everyone for their comments so far. The "server" in question is a basic 2 node cluster connected to an MSA500. It runs a variety of applications including Oracle, Apache, Samba, and a proprietary app built by another vendor. The hardware is monitored, maintained and backed up regularly. The setup is mission critical to my client. They spent a lot of time and money to make sure it wouldn't go down. The list's point is well taken that old *nix installs are very reliable long term. I've had similar experiences. Given this particular client's need for a reliable, stable, redundant system, I was contemplating alternatives or future upgrades rather than letting things age. [CentOS] 10 Year old IT Infrastructure
Hi Guys, I have a client who hopes to keep their server another 5 years making it 10 years old at that time. At this point there are no plans to add new infrastructure or a new server to the mix. Their business model is fairly static. I'd like to see them upgrade. Can anyone suggest specific reasons why running a business on 10 year old equipment is a bad thing? Specific arguments I can think of would be: - Hard/Impossible to find replacement hardware - Lack of support for both H/W and S/W - Possibly unable to run current versions of CentOS - Higher probability of hardware failures over time - Performance bottlenecks Any other thoughts? Hi, I managed to get my C4580 (4500 series) connected to my router to work with 64 bit 5.3. Once again, by itself the network card works correctly. That is with the modem NOT dialed up. Here's where things get interesting... If I flush the firewall rules: iptables -F Bring down the eth0 interface: ifconfig eth0 down Connect with the modem: wvdial & Bring up the interface: ifconfig eth0 192.168.7.1 At this point the ppp0 interface drops off and redials. [CentOS] Looking for Insights
Hi Guys, I had a strange problem yesterday and I'm curious as to what everyone thinks. I have a client with a Red Hat Enterprise 2.1 cluster. All quality HP equipment with an MSA 500 storage array acting as the shared storage between the two nodes in the cluster. This cluster is configured for reliability and not load balancing. All work is handled by one node or the other not both. There are two 100GB RAID 5 logical drives in the MSA500. Linux sees them as /dev/md2 and /dev/md3 respectively. Running cat /proc/mdstat shows them as "active multipath" and otherwise healthy. There is a nightly shell script that runs and backs up information via tar to a USB external drive. The last thing the script does before unmounting the USB drive is to run the sync command. Yesterday it was noticed that the backup script was hung. A quick check via "ps aux" showed the backup script and a sync process still hanging around from Monday night. All attempts to stop these processed failed and it was decided a reboot was the best fix. All production services where shut down as much as possible. Because of the locked processes the machine would hot shut down properly and was physically turned off. On reboot the drives in the server were checked via e2fsck with no problems. The shared storage: md2 and md3 also mounted without errors. All services started properly. No errors about md2 or md3 were reported in dmesg or /var/log/messages Strangely, all files added via Samba after Monday are gone. This is limited to only one device: md3. Everything else is fine. Checking the two drives/partitions that make up md3 show none of the missing files. Any brilliant thoughts as to where those files might have gone would be appreciated. The files lost are not critical so there are no major problems but it's a puzzle I can't quite figure out. Re: [CentOS] Announcing the CentOS on Laptops initiative
Dag, is this the correct page? http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/ It is. I forgot to send a link with the announcement :| And are we supposed to do it on our own page and then link to it? Seems like the existing ones are like that. No, I googled for specific keywords to find existing pages. These links eventually belong in their own Laptop-model pages. Or, if we create a page on there, should multiple entries of the same laptop model go on the same line somehow? What I prefer is to have one single page per Laptop model. And a different section for each CentOS version (starting with the latest, CentOS-5 first). If people have their own blog articles or webpages about their laptop model, I would like to have this information reside inside of that page (now they are on the index page temporarily). Sadly, for now, you have to request access to be allowed to create or edit these pages. I hope in the future we will have a more liberal view wrt. the wiki. PS I created this structure for your X60 for now, I plan to add my own laptops soon (but it does not include a X60). If you can add your information to this existing page, I am sure this is very valuable for another X60 owner. I think it is cool to see this effort undertaken, thanks Dag! :) I may need to install C5 on my Fujitsu that currently has Ubuntu on it. Speaking of which, those guys have been maintaining both official and user submitted laptop reports for awhile so you might want to take a look over there and possibly borrow some cues or ideas for this project. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTesting https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeamTemplate -Shawn ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

[CentOS] Wierd Networking Problem
Hi Guys, I'm 100% sure this is not a Linux issue but I want a second opinion... I have a Linux server running CentOS. It was been absolutely perfect without any errors or problems. Since Monday it has been unable to send email. It is configured to act as a smart host. All email gets forwarded to smtp.isp.net. The server is on a network behind a firewall completely nat'd. No ports are forwarded to it. telnet smtp.isp.net 25 generates the following: Trying a.b.c.d... Connected to smtp.isp.net. Escape character is '^]'. And then nothing. All other machines can connect to smtp.isp.net 25 without a problem. They also use that host for their outgong mail server. Using links to surf the web has a similar result. It just hangs traceroute and nslookups work correctly. There are no errors anywhere. The network in question has various routing and vlan configurations, proxy servers and such. I tend to suspect they're the problem. They're also not in my control. The firewall does show the Linux box attempting to make SMTP connections but nothing else. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I have not yet rebooted the server. Shawn ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos

I have noticed sometimes that I get the segfault, but the next time I boot, I can boot into X. I really don't know enough to guess whether sometimes it is finishing X and removing the lock before the segfault and sometimes it is not. I am not so unhappy with the situation but being unknowledable of course worry about what effects a segfault during shutdown may have. I do notice that after the segfaults, it goes on to unmount the filesystems and other things that it does normally (but I can't say everything normally as I don't really understand the normal steps of it shutting down). I'd like to: 1) figure out how to stop the segfault especially since sometimes the scim panel won't appear after a reboot (and requires another reboot to appear again). 2) see if the scim segfault is causing the trouble with X starting and if not, figure out why the lock is not being removed. If you have suggestions as to what to look into, I am happy to hear them. The only thing I have tried is googling scim-panel-gtk segfault and found scim-lib 0.99.6 is available (13 Aug 2004) Fixed a bug which causes segfault on x86_64 platform.
