a laptop makes a nice 24/7/365 server.

using 'extend battery pack' or 'oem' pack?

you need a battery manager/monitor program to set up lid switch.

or use a 'script' to switch.

any settings in bios config?

yum knows where to 'look for what' in directory /etc/yum.repos.d

have a look at: http://yum.baseurl.org/wiki/
 then read: http://yum.baseurl.org/wiki/Faq

get a battery manager, do not 'roll back'.

questions::
  make/model?
  oem manual?

note::  easy

male to female fan power 'dongle' with temp to speed controller.
insert between fan power cable and fan power socket.

do not claim to be 'it'. nor do i came dcs, dce.

do claim;
design ic control systems - 1969,
build, maintain, service, s100 micro computers - 1974

so, yes, easy... ;=)

if you run a web search for such a 'dongle' available, you should
find plenty.

accountants in U.S.A. only 'know' about spreadsheets because
that is what they are paid for.

engineering is by engineers because that is what they are paid for.

true. i was thinking 'old school' slide drawer racks.

because i doubt that 'it' or 'heads of authority' will allow changes to
server racks, H's best bet is to get 'fixed base' or 'roll around' type
acoustic wall panels. they are available with various types of sound
absorbing covering and of various heights and widths.

one or two can be placed between him and area of rack to block/absorb
sound.

temperature regulated fan speed can reduce noise.

use of a baffle box with styrofoam or thin foam rubber lining.

   -+-+
fan \/ | |
 /\ | |
   --+-+---
 ^ ^
 baffles

spacing between upper and lower baffles must be equal to or larger
than diameter of fan so as to not restrict flow. also, making
enclosure 2" larger than fan will help reduce restriction.

after looking thru above guide, it hit me that my
search was improper.

tried search again using single word 'kickstart'.

a big diff.

best of which;

  https://geekpeek.net/kickstart-file-centos/

shows step by step instructions with graphics of
the 'kickstart configurator'.

much better then what the red hat and centos
instructions show, and all contained on 1 page. ;=)

again, thanks for your help. you put me in right
direction and correct spelling.

John, i do thank you for all your help. greatly appreciated.

before i digging any further into things here, i believe i will log onto
linuxwireless.org to see what i can find in way of drivers for card.

as for scanning for wifi in area, i believe 'war drive' progs will be
best bet.

intent is not for hacking, i want to increase protection for when i
start using wifi with laptop, which is going to be some more digging
because centos does not see wifi chip.

all in all, i am going to have to educate myself on workings of wifi.

thanks again.

[CentOS] yumex errs out on startup

2016-12-22 Thread geo.inbox.ignored

greetings.

on tower box, yumex errs out on startup with error message;

  Error in repository setup

Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base

You can try starting 'yumex -n' from a command line
and deselecting the repositories causing problems
  and try again.

file CentOS-Base.repo is line for line same on both tower box and
laptop. no problems on laptop.

what might be causing err?

this is true.

my bad, failed to mention that when i was able to see other wifi signals,
it was via the modem/router/wifi. installed wifi card to see if it would
catch any wifi signals.

as for what box is seeing;

]$ pwd
/var/log

]$ grep Ethe dmesg
eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xd000, IRQ 5, 00:07:95:18:2b:bb
8139cp: 10/100 PCI Ethernet driver v1.3 (Mar 22, 2004)
8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.28

]$ grep eth dmesg
eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xd000, IRQ 5, 00:07:95:18:2b:bb
eth1: RealTek RTL8139 at 0xf957cf00, 00:00:b4:be:4a:14, IRQ 5

]$ lspci|grep Eth
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] \
SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 90)
00:08.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. \
RTL-8100/8101L/8139 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (rev 10)
00:0c.0 Ethernet controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR2413/AR2414 \
 Wireless Network Adapter [AR5005G(S) 802.11bg] (rev 01)
]$

so, card is seen and readable. maybe needs drivers?

also, not mentioned before;

  eth0 = xfinity modem
  eth1 = 2Wire 2701HG-B

on a tower box;
   eth0 = onboard wired ethernet
   eth1 = wired ethernet card connected to a modem/router/wifi
   eth? = wifi/wireless card

and like, there is a great big differance in commands. ;=)

some of my email filters are for tagging linux, unix, and bsd email clients.
it is very interesting to note the amount of oos users on linux support
list. never have understood or tried to reason why some peeps want to
use a crappy os that is plagued with weak security.

then it must be happening when i first install and reboot to finish
installation.

reason i say this is because when i start up kde as user and open
konqueror file browser, i always open / and move it to first tab so i
always have / at quick access and i note that .dbus is at top.

how/where can one find info on which progs access dbus?

cause this is not getting me an answer that i am looking for. guess i
will just need to check .dbus/sessions-bus/ each time i 'sudo' or 'su'
to see if i can find answer.

not going to worry about it, just something i am curious about and one
more thing to learn about linux.

"an idol mind is the devil's workshop" and i like to make it difficult
for him to get in. :=)

thank you for replying. has been most interesting.

when you say 'first run a session', are you meaning when system is

or when a session that uses dbus-daemon is run?

it is not that i think i need file in /root.

file is located /.dbus/sessions-bus/*

could be that i could have been more specific in wording, like;

while using rsync to copy /root path from a tower box computer
to a laptop computer, i type something incorrectly, causing rsync
to attempt copying entire / directory to laptop's / directory.
i was able to stop syncing before all 64 bit laptop files were
over written with tower's 32 bit files, with accept for tower's
 /.dbus/sessions-bus/* over writing of laptop's
 /.dbus/sessions-bus/*

what i am now in wonder of is if there is any differance in file
between the 2 computers.

ie, is there a differance between a 32 bit and 64 bit system's
/.dbus/sessions-bus/* file?

as said, a web search nor reading thru pages, ie, faq, help, doc
pages at http://www.freedesktop.org/software/dbus/ gave no
indication of such.

[CentOS] wireshark only starts from a terminal

2016-12-17 Thread geo.inbox.ignored

greetings.

on laptop with new install of centos 6.8 and current update, wireshark
will not start via kde kickoff application launcher. it will start from
start from a terminal.

"locate wireshark|grep bin/" show 2 paths for wireshark;

  /usr/bin/wireshark
  /usr/sbin/wireshark

opening kde menu editor show simple command 'wireshark'. changing to;

  /usr/bin/wireshark

failed. changed to;

  /usr/sbin/wireshark

failed.

do not know about Denmark, but something is rotten here with install.

with previous system install, wireshark worked from kde menu w/o any
problem.

to verify install ran yum to delete, then reinstalled, same problem.

question, what might be causing this and how to cure.

as always, any and all help, comments, suggestions greatly appreciated.

tia. [this tape will not self destruct. 8=) ]

[CentOS] deleted .dbus/sessions-bus/[fn]

2016-12-16 Thread geo.inbox.ignored

greetings.

while using rsync to copy /root/* from tower box to laptop computer, i
accidentally over wrote .dbus/sessions-bus/[fn] on laptop computer.

ran extensive web search, including;

   http://www.freedesktop.org/software/dbus/

to find how to replace or recreate file, only to find everything about
what it does and why.

question is, how do i recreate, short of re-installing from .iso?

have not rebooted laptop system.

need help in a BIG way.

any and all help/suggestions greatly appreciated.

tia.

John and Jonathon, thank you for replies.

both of you were helpful in refreshing my chemo brain. seems that chemo
can also effect long term memory. 8=\ had i known just how deep chemo can
effect ones body, i may have moved to Denver for cure. B=)

seems problem has now gone away after a couple of reboots and is holding
after many more.

as for other problems, i decided to rsync my partitions on laptop to
tower box and install fresh with 6.8 dvd 1 & 2.

while at it, also decided to repartition hdd to /boot, /swap, /, and /home.

all went well with rsync moving partitioning paths back into /home.

now have a new problem from update attempt, with error message of;

Error: database disk image is malformed

which will be "Subject:" of new post coming shortly.

thanks again for you help. much appreciated.

when you look at source, look for something like;

that is one possibility.

even greater is op is a 'user', not 'root'.

_normally_ / most, if not all unix/linux systems, /home is owned by
'root'. which means *everything*, including a 'user' home directory
is own by 'root'. therefore a 'user' running a normal user can do
_nothing_ to his/her 'home' directory.

therefore a normal user *must* 'sudo' or 'su' to make changes to
users 'home' directory.

[CentOS] kde failing???

2016-12-11 Thread geo.inbox.ignored

greetings.

centos 6.8
kde 4.3.4
toshiba satellite l4550-s5976 laptop

 - part 1: clock losing time

first noticed time was off by 8 min, reset via F2 cl terminal.

~40 min later, off by ~2 min, reset via 'service manager' by stopping
ntpd, count 20, started ntpd, within a few seconds, clock reset to
correct time.

~1 hour later, noticed clock off again, considered cause to be cmos
battery failing. after removing ~30 screws and bottom cover, found
that cmos batter was soldered to board. checked with dvom, voltage
read 3.2v with main battery and charger removed.

ran web search on tower box to find that cmos battery is a rechargeable
3.0 v battery and being that removing screws and cover took several
minutes, with battery being up, cause must be elsewhere.

note - noticed that a time problem was occurring just after tzdata
update on 2016-1201.

was not able to pursue further due to next problems.

 - part 2: unable to open knoqueror file browser [kfb].

having other things to do other than worry about time problem, decided
move a few files around and give further thought to time problem before
opening thunderbird to post problem.

with several other kfb's open, decided to open another. not. clicking
kfb icon started opening of kfb, but it shut down within a couple
seconds. repeated attempt 4 more times, all failed.

have previously had at least 10 kfb's open and never had a problem with
opening additional.

strange, thought i. decided to reboot system to see if problem cleared.

now way. new problem.

 - part 3: kde desktop fails to run.

system rebooted to default desktop manager, entered password, kde starts
to load, drops out, desktop manager reruns.

able to login as 'root' using kde no problem.

any and all help/suggestions greatly appreciated.

tia.

understood and accepted in relation of firefox.

was not asking for just 40.x, which used as above.

to be more exacting, if should have need for some other package,
is there a site which archives centos packages?

for example, in attempting to get vivaldi browser working, even with
latest of releases, there are early *.so files showing as missing.

tried a web search, no hits.

with moz devs futzing around with firefox as they have been lately,
it would be nice to have another browser handy for sites that
firefox does not handle.

after a whole lot of web searching and reading, still found nothing
anywhere near to problem.

swag time. opened about:config, "reload" in search bar, toggled names
that appeared close.

closed firefox, reopened, all back to normal.

no idea which toggle was correct. when i have nothing better to do,
will go back and toggle names 1 by 1 to see which was cause.

[CentOS] [OT] firefox 45.5.1

2016-12-03 Thread geo.inbox.ignored
read 'announce' of new release for firefox-45.5.0, then for firefox-45.5.0,
decided, wrongly, to upgrade. my bad. nothing but problems.

on opening what moz devs considered as 'latest and greatest', found that it
was more crapola from moz devs.

first run was to login with my isp, only to find page would not fully load
and a message bar saying;

Firefox prevented this page from automatically reloading[Allow]

clicking [Allow] button only cycled with same. 10 more clicks, decided that
was enough.

now, i would like to roll back to earlier 40.x, but no can do because of
deleting 40.x to make room for new release.

now have /var on it's own partition and have room for updating.

3 questions;

1- anyone else having problems with 45.5.1?

2- where might i find earlier releases of 40.x?

  3- if i install 40.x in path /var/lib/yum/plugins/local/,
will i be able to roll back.

hoping for positive replies to #2 & 3#.

replies/suggestions greatly appreciated.

well yes. of course there will be power consumption from mains.

my view is there is less electronic wear and tear when powered up
24/7 and due to inrush power surge on power up, less chance of some
component going bad.

years back when i did computer systems work, i had a couple client
calls for a system not powering up at start of morning hours. i used
light bulb example to explain why and that they would naturally see
an increase in utilities bill. both started leaving systems up.

have a friend who's system lost power supply on power up, and again,
after explaining about light bulb, he leaves system powered up and
because he is using centos and kde, he uses 'suspend to ram' when
not using and 'suspend to disk' when away for several days.

it is all owners choice.

ps.

[CentOS] thunderbird update 45.4.0 tries to start with Lightning calender

2016-10-06 Thread geo.inbox.ignored

FYI.

if anyone has problem the new thunderbird update 45.4.0 trying
to start with Lightning calendar and gets the "Add-ons Manager"
tab error message of a missing component, click the "Extensions"
to left.

in Lightning 'bar', select [Disable], restart thunderbird, problem
solved.

i do not use Lightning calender, so problem was easy to solve.

if you have been using Lightning calender, problem may not occur.

as for your problem of slow down, i find that a lot of sites will
throttle back, possible because they have their system set up to
do so.

i found that many speed test sites use a poor way of testing speed
and do not really test.

searched for better tester and so far have had good results using;

  http://speedof.me/

have a look at;

  http://speedof.me/howitworks.html

for explanation of testing process and you will see why it is
better.

excuse delay in posting this info.

found cause of problem by accident.

while using 'disk utility' to mount a usb memory stick, i noticed
that 1st partition of extended partitions was showing an oos partition.
[yes, i left oos on laptop in case i need to upgrade bios cmos]

knowing this was not correct, i rebooted with 'partedmagic' to see
what it showed about the weird partition, found nothing, rebooted
centos, started 'disk utility' again, oos partition still there.

'no guts, no blue chips', so i deleted partition and rebooted.

centos came back up without problems, started 'disk utility' again,
oos partition still gone. opened desktop menu, selected 'Leave',
suspended to disk was back.

no idea of cause of problem, nor am i going to worry about it.

thought i might pass along what i found so if anyone else runs
into problem, they know one cure.

Re: [CentOS] users unable to log into kde after 6.8 update [RESOLVED]

2016-08-25 Thread geo.inbox.ignored

Nicholas, hello again.

while checking thru old emails to archive, noted that i did not update
you on your downgrade solution.

seems solution was a one shot deal.

ran an update before last one with new kernel, had same problem of
user unable to login.

dropped to cl ran downgrade, back to gui login, failed again.

presuming that problem was with fact that i was not able to downgrade
to 'xorg-x11-*' that my user configs were setup for, so i logged in as
user root, renamed active home directory, set up user geo again and
rebuilt new user geo from a lot of old configs.

after latest update with latest kernel, all is still working.

what caused problem, not sure, but i am presuming that it may have been
because i was trying to use configs for an earlier revision and they
will not work.

thanks again.

besides versatility of yum, vastness of arguments is, for me, an
enjoyable learning process.

when i found yumex wanting to also remove libreoffice files, i
dropped back to yum. when yum also wanted to remove libreoffice,
it was back to 'man yum'. i saw history, but only read what it
would do.

failing to find anything to remove _only_ what i wrongly installed,
it was back to basics and rpm.

after reading your reply, i ran 'man yum' again to reread 'history'.

having done so, i am at wonder just how 'history' and its arguments
would handle remove wrong fonts and not include libreoffice.

at this time, i am considering installing bad fonts again just to see
what will happen.

at this time, i have more pressing duties, but will give 'yum history'
a run later and post back with results.

thank you for reply and piquing my brain for further knowledge.

yes, they show in yum.log.

when trying to 'yum remove [package-name]', yum also tries to remove
libreoffice packages as well.

thank you. that link was better than a command.

now have it bookmarked, page saved local and bookmarked.

also have both yumex and vlc installed and working.

greatly appreciate all your help and rest of repliers.

biggest upset in trying to get all this back together is that i had done
it all before on a desktop tower with very little need of help. that was
before having gone thru chemo treatment for lymphoma.

for many years i had 'near photographic' memory. recall was not a problem.
now, if i think of something i need to do in another room, just as soon as
i pass thru a doorway, i forget why i am there. about the only thing i do
not forget is when i need to go to bathroom. :=)

with having a chemo brain, i do not recommend anyone accepting chemo
treatment. have cancer cut out, magnetic radiation. better yet, if one
is receptive to such, hemp oil treatment and enjoy getting rid of
cancer. 8=)

thanks again.

[CentOS] centos 6.8 creates install to sde instead of sda

2016-08-08 Thread geo.inbox.ignored

greetings one and all.

when attempting to install centos 6.8 to an i386 mid tower, during
setup of hard disk partitions, selection is for /dev/sde.

if continued, after reboot, error is displayed after 'welcome to centos'.

lines read:

Checking filesystem
fsck.ext4: no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda3
/dev/sda3:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -h 8193
   [FAILED]

*** an error occurred during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell.
*** Warning -- SELinux is active
*** Disabling security enforcement for system recovery.
*** Run 'setenforce 1' to reenable.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue):

entering 'e2fsck -h 8193 /dev/sda3' results with same e2fsck message
as above.

after reading article;

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/recover-bad-superblock-from-corrupted-partition/

using command;

  dumpe2fs /dev/sda3 | grep superblock

error message is;

dumpe2fs: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda3
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.

if i enter command;

  dumpe2fs /dev/sde3 | grep superblock

superblock info is shown.

why is sde working and not sda?

this system has previously held 6.8, but partitioning was off in
cylinders so i decided to correct.

purchased latest release of partedmagic, booted, created new
partitioning by cylinders.

under pmagic, when i enter command;

  dumpe2fs /dev/sda3 | grep superblock

superblocks are shown.

so, how do i correct what ever to install 6.8 to sda, not sde?

any/all answers/suggestions greatly appreciated.

tia.

[CentOS] KDE 4.14.8 -- 'Leave' - no suspend to disk

2016-07-30 Thread geo.inbox.ignored

greetings one and all.

just what is a better way to suspend kde on a laptop?

for a programmer to write 'leave' routines and not have
option to 'suspend to disk', tells me the programmer;

  does not own a laptop
is mad at laptop owners because he does not have one
has stock in companies that make batteries for laptops

to be serious about this, just where should i post/write
to get in contact with someone who can see about getting
this problem corrected?

any/all suggestions/answers greatly needed.

well, i never.

never enjoyed installing an os as much as i did centos 7.

selection and setup was not difficult, all went well. i do like the new
design of process better than previous.

fun really started when those inline prompts started. i though i was terse.
those prompts have me beat. it took a couple of errors to see just what was
what, then breezed thru it. reminded me a little of cromemco install back
in s100 days.

did not like logging into gnome. that creature needs to stay in front lawns
keeping yards safe.

did figured out how to get kde, had to change my color scheme so i could
see what i had set up. slide show of my 'girls' is running ok. would not
liked to have lost them.

still need to go back to 'system settings > applications appearance' to do
some tweaking. panel bar has lighter color for text making it a little
difficult to read. having 16 to 20 progs open makes for a bit of squinting.

all in all, my congratulations to centos crew for putting together a real
fine product and procedure.

my most grateful appreciation to repliers who help me get this install.

especially to John R Pierce for staying with me thru all of it. most
helpful.

when buying memory or hdd, i check both ebay and amazon for price,
warranty and shipping.

last purchases i made were all from amazon.

1 TB sata hdd, 2 ddr 1x2 GB memory and a power supply for an emachine.

1 TB sata hdd, 2 ddr 1x2 GB memory for tower box.

turned out emachine had more than a power supply, so 2nd hdd and power
supply went into tower box.

tower box is oem mainboard for ide drives, bought an ide2sata adapter for
it. now it has 2 1 TB sata drives, 1 250 GB ide and 1 ide cd/dvd r/w drive,
1 usb cd/dvd r/w usb drive, 1 hd 3.5 floppy, 1 dc2120 tape drive on floppy
controller, 1 dc2120 / travan on scsi controller.

no front cover so all drive will fit and have access.

i tricked it with a 3 position momentary-center-momentary switch for
reset | off | on.

i took a much needed nap while pulling 7 x86_64 iso. it was not until i
started to run checksum to verify that i saw i pulled the 'everything'
iso file. now have the 4.0 GB dvd iso file.

rebooting to install correct iso.

back later. again.

i am considering memory upgrade.

if some funds that i am hoping for come in next month, i am considering
a new multi core tower and a new laptop.

if good fortune hits, this lt will become an emergency access terminal
to new desktop. old desktop will be converted to a zoneminder server
for ip cams.

i do have other more pressing obligations that must be taken care of
first. what is left will go for my toys.

7-x86_64 has finished downloading. that means i am out of here for a
new install. back later to let you know how it went.

again, greatly appreciate your advice and help. i thank you.

you are very correct. not in question to your knowledge, i did run a
search to locate info on cpu for my knowledge.

what caused my thinking to be in error is there is a label to right of
rest pad that states 'Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit'.

chemo brain again. 8=\

run 'win 7', no way in hell do i run oos.

this lt came with oos 7 already installed. after i tricked the oos 7
partition a few times to reduce size, i repartitioned drive with oos
down to sda1= 1.6 GB system, sda2= 43.0 GB oos 7, sda4= 8.4 GB recovery,
sda3= extended sda5= 1.1 GB boot, sda6= 3.1 GB swap, sda7 thru
sda10= 11 GB linux os, sda11= 84 GB home, sda12= 66 GB open use.

only reason i left oos 7 is that if i ever, God forbid, am forced to
lower my self, it is installed. only times i have booted oos was during
repartitioning to see if it had problems with sda3. it did not, i have
not booted oos again. i did pull an update package, do not recall which
and i burned the 3 dvds. that i all i have done with oos.

during the writing of this, i started pulling 7.1511 on tower.

i do thank you for bringing it to my attention. very much appreciated.

strange, but it was the driver. new install ran without a stall.

lt is now recovered from 7-32 trashing.

i would very much like to install 7-32, but it looks like it just
may be that, like fine wine, 7-32 needs to age a little longer
for my taste.

my regrets to the altarch group.

then again, not as bad as i was thinking.

or, no guts, no blue chips.

booted rescue mode again, then chroot /mnt/sysimage.

ls /sbin/grub*, there it sat and the brain snapped, 'grub-install'.

'grub-install /dev/sda' and a reboot brought up old boot selection menu.

new problem, while watching screen scroll, it stopped, of all places,
while loading the touch pad driver. great.

to be on safe side, now installing a lighter system, than what is at sda7,
to sda8 where i tried to load 7-32.

if booting new install fails, i will figure out how to get inside case
and disable touch pad. with the heat it puts out, it is nothing but a
waste of battery power because i have a usb wireless logitech m570 marble
that i love using more than the logitech trackman marble w/tail that i
bought many years ago when they first came out.

1039 of 1301. not long now.

i do hope it is driver problem and not the touch pad.

being 'frugal', yet a short step of 'gung ho', i am saving pages i have
already logged and some of the linked pages. if while reading a page and
i need to read a page i do not have, i am back at site pulling that page
and it's links. after a few more trips to site, i just may well have the
whole all of 7 32 bit.

my current count sites that i have pulled is over 250. when i get my new

will have to figure out how to run a bot to keep it updated. ;=)

while i am at it, please allow me to pick your brain so i can refresh my
forgetful chemo brain.

after the 7-32 fiasco, in attempt to recover grub boot, i booted 6.8
install disk in rescue mode, when in sh, ran chroot /mnt/sysimage.

there is where chemo brain filed.

what is command to restore boot to 6.8 install. it has been a very long
time when last had need. now when i do, recall fails me.

hi Ned, you up late or early on your side of the pond?

the above altarch 7 repos links do have both 32 and 64 bit directories.

after reading John's post, i logged them and bookmarked both.

good evening John.

interesting point you make. sounds very reasonable. i have never made
an install to a laptop with wifi before, minimal or full, so i have no
experiance.

have installed wifi to an established system, but that is whole
different pond to to play in.

there is an option to add additional networking, but does not seem to
apply to wifi, so i do not believe install i was using is wifi aware
and i need to pull iso Johnny referred me to.

intended to pull it after my last post. saw your post, felt i should
read it first.

have you tried the 7 32 bit?

ooopppsss...

not there yet.

if life did not have problems, would it be any fun?

with default install, aka, command line...

tried it, not what is desired.

rebooted, selected 'CentOS release 6.8 (final) (on /dev/sda7)', and
got what i desired even less. :=\

  error: invalid file name 'CentOS^(2.6.32-642.3.1.el6.i686)'

select: 'Advanced options for CentOS release 6.8 (Final) (on /dev/sda7)',
selections are;

  5 (on /dev/sda7)
  5 (on /dev/sda7)

'5' what?

selecting either, i get above 2 errors again.

after applying the all mighty '3 fingers of death', i boot centos 6.8
live dvd to see if original files are still in boot partition.

after mounting boot partition, a study of files indicates that all 6.x
files are as should be. for some unknown reason, 7 32 bit does not
understand what they are.

of course is no 'CentOS^(2.6.32-642.3.1.el6.i686)', but there are all
of the '2.6.32-642.3.1.el6.i686' files for centos 6.8 final.

so now what? any suggestions for recovery?

a minimal install is a good suggestion, as i do believe the ati vga
chip is a part of problem.

gui with previous installs has not been a problem. i believe that the
build of 7 was intended for newer systems and that old video drivers
have been dropped to make room for newer systems.

again, thanks for suggestions. all are welcome.

how about a $.05 if you answer next. ;-)

when you say cli build, are package names offered during cli build, ie,
asked and answered, or after reboot to install?

if yes, where do i find names for package groups?

is new boot level 3 or minimal level 5?

if level 3, yum install or get?

not being nosy, just want to know what is ahead.

thanks again for replying.

have a doctor's appointment around noon, will run cli after return.

CentOS-7-i386-DVD-1511.iso.

have been trying to run gui install and beginning to believe that
could be a part of problem.

after sending last post, i did , did not run 'top', did
go thru 'f' keys 3 thru 6. 6 is where pointer displays, is frozen,
will not move, all keys are locked like it is graphic. even
trying fails. does work.

do recall from attempts 1 & 2 that when i tried , along bottom
of screen the 'f' key functions is shown, plus text i do not recall.

because of problems with gui, i am seriously considering text mode.

last time i used text mode was early years of linux and with red hat.

concern with text mode is this is hdd has 12 partitions that i need to
maintain, so i need custom setup.

also want to select all but last 2 selections of software for a
workstation install.

would there be any place that i can pull info for text mode so i will
have an understanding of what i will be reading to make install.

or, is there a way to run gui, but use a graphics mode other than what
default is.

ria, i have a felling that problem is with fact that vga is an amd/ati
as shown in first post.

if there is anything that by running install to lockup and going to cli
would help solving problem, i am willing.

again, thank you for reply, greatly appreciate.

yes does.

users are now able to open kde desktop without getting dropped
back out.

still no idea of cause, but for now system will be running with
x11 downgraded.

being that your friend and i are only 2 reported cases of problem,
i do not feel that it is worth filing a bug report.

tho i am having a problem with my mid tower having dropped in
speed after fresh install of 6.8, it may be because it is about
10 yro and problem is with hardware. not something i am going to
worry about for not because i will be retiring it next month with
an amd quad system.

i am most appreciative for your reply and solution.

information i was asked for is collected, but i am having problem
finding a text file storage site that allows viewing instead of
downloading. i thought i had bookmarked such, but seems i may
have not restored bookmarks for such sites when i rebuilt this box.
