Re: [CentOS] phpmyadmin on centos 4

2007-11-15 Thread umair shakil
Dear Salam,

PhpMyAdmin is basically not an rpm package. Its is tar.gz or bz2 package
You just extract it and move the files to Document Root where ur web pages
served. There is no option available for compiling because its is
already complied.

Yum will have no package i suppose, possible its available on extras

 Umair,

I have had a similar problem, you need to check that the printer driver
 is set correctly.

The other possible cause is that the printer was not switched on when
 your computer was booted.

My client eventually times out as the file is not being provided.

It works by the way on localhost, just not from a client. selinux is

 I iptables turned off.
tftp is running and my files are in /tftpboot

I did the yum install tftp-server as normal.

Nothing is in my hosts.allow and hosts.deny

why might my client be timing out...

 Hi,

I have two pc using centos 4, these machines need only access to the

access should be restricted to this local network - mainly the users
of these pc should not be able to access webpages outside of the local
network. My problem is, that I have no own centos repository and
therefore these two pc need access to the centos mirrors to get updates.
What would be the best way to restrict the network access to the local
network and allow the access to some external addresses (a centos
mirror and maybe some other servers/websites).
I was thinking about iptables but I'm not very experienced in this
questions - maybe there is an easier way. The configuration with
iptables seems to be very complex, I was skimming through some
 tutorials and the man pages.

In thanks and with best reagrds,

This doesn't have anything to do with his issue. From his email,
nagios is working fine, it's just returning that his webserver is
throwing an error. It's the webserver error he's tracking down.

gust give the server name 192.168.1.10 and no need to put :80, as it is

While you don't *need* to specify the port, the example config does
this and it's beneficial to do this if you have more than one website,
with apache listening on multiple ports. Otherwise you have the
potential for one ServerName definition to override another. With
apache, it's best to be as explicit as possible.

Hi Top posting means replying at the top of a message rather than below
or inside the original message. As a preference for this mailing list
and a lot of others they ask that you don't do this. The general reason
being that it makes the e-mails easier to read.

Is this a permissions issue on my /var/www/html/ folder?

Re: [CentOS] Permissions question

2007-10-01 Thread umair shakil
Dear salam,

Please make sure that, user viewpoint must be a member of that group
which user todd belongs (because todd is able to write in the directory).
I suppose permissions donot need to be checked, beacuse todd is able to
write.

OR, the files permissions should be 664

On 10/1/07, Todd Cary [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

My www directory is owned by apache and the group is todd and the

My Windows computers use Samba and they log into Linux with todd.

Under the www directory there are various directories which may have a
group belonging to a user e.g. viewpoint. Using this example, there
is a directory under www (acutally called httpd), viewpoint that is
owned by apache and is a member of the viewpoint group. todd is
also a member of the viewpoint group.

Now this is the problem I do not know how to correct: if todd using
Samba creates a directory in viewpoint, the owner and group is todd
with 755 permissions. Now if the viewpoint user tries to write to the
directory, he does not have adequate permissions.

Maybe I have not setup the owners and groups correctly. maybe there is
something I need to do with how Samba interacts with the server.

 Any suggestions will be appreciated...

The php behavior should not change, as it's a minor bugfix update. If

CentOs or RedHat flavours donot come up with Reiserfs support by default.
u can install
it using like

yum install enablerepo=centosplus reiserfs-utils

please confirm the command as i used this long time ago

Suppose, u want to /var to be reiserfs supported, u have to format /var with

Re: [CentOS] Newbie: how to install from Windows?

2007-09-27 Thread umair shakil
Dear Salam,

Yes, these iso images first you have to burn on CD or simply make it a
bootable CentOs 4.5
CD. Just like you have windows bootable CD.

There is no need to unzip the files as it makes no sense. just burn the CDs
with these
iso images.

Secondly, in centos.org website there is also availibility of Server CD
image comprise
of one iso image only, means you have the server addition on single CD. But
here u can use
CentOs only as command line not GUI, The GUI can be installed with yum as
well...

Yes and no. The packages for xorg have been renamed slightly (a change

You probably want the xorg-x11-server-sdk package, though there are

Re: [CentOS] running php4 and php5 parallel

2007-09-20 Thread umair shakil
Hi,

Let us suppose, you have PHP4 RPM installation, PHP5 source installation.
you type php -v you should get only one output like

PHP5, The PHP Group,

Let us start the apache, and put some php function in a file phpinfo() in
index.php. you will get only PHP5(suppose). I am trying to explain that
your output is one (PHP4 or PHP5).

The question of running both in parallel seems to be difficult in this
scenario.
It also says when u will get to know that which version is now u running

Well, through my research, VMware is only good if your are in a Tesing

is not recommended in the production environment. Because of following

It uses Kernel Resources upto high and u need very High End Server
IF u are using 3 etc applications like (DNS, WEB, FTP), if the machine goes

your three application goes down

Irrespective of which virtual server solution you choose be aware that
virtualization brings with it steep storage requirements. Think of
providing around 1TB of RAID10 storage for 20 guests. VMs do lots of
tiny random IOs so for 20 guests split between 2 servers I provide
500GB of RAID10 to each via iSCSI SAN.

From my own research it seems that VMWare or Xen are really the two
major products to be considered, are there any others I should be

 Not really.

Is anyone running Linux Guest O/S's inside a Windows host

I do at work so I can prototype some Linux stuff on my Windows box.

Anyway thank you for your time and any experiences /

I would try both VMware server and Xen on CentOS, if you have 2 servers
set them up side by side and plugged into your storage SAN. Run them
through their paces, do some benchmarks get a feel for ease of use and
 maintenance.

When your ready and have a budget you can move up to the commercial
 versions, ESX and Xen Enterprise.

[CentOS] Very strange problem i have faced in my 2 years carrier

2007-09-12 Thread umair shakil
Dear Concerns,

I would like to share a very strange problem. I am from Pakistan/Islamabad.
Last month i was on trainning
from Askari Bank Limited (Juniper). Here in Askari i m running NMS-- MRTGs
using CentOs 4.4. On trainning i recieved
a call from collique saying

when i su -l NMS says root user doesnot exist. and also MRTGs not
working. well i was amazed how was it
possible. In the Evening i came back to office. I boot the machine in single
user mode and type the command;

less /etc/passwd

here when i found that user root existed, but the only thing that was
amazing is;

the spelling of root was changed from root to R00t. i changed to root
and every thing worked.

I want to ask, what is this, this doesnot seem a garbage value or nor
corruption of passwd file. only showing someone changes this. Here we have
bank private network, only two people have access for it me and another
guy.

what are your opinions??

Please also share your strange experience.

  what are your opinions??

I have seen vi do this action when it didn't understand a keycode on teh
terminal you are using properly... change the case of a few letters next
to the cursor. But IIRC that was busybox vi.

If you suspect your box has been rooted, then perhaps it is time to do
 some checking.

 rpm -Va

Also, have you ever updated the box?

Shuld the daemon /usr/sbin/vsftpd be run as root or should it be

Or is the account only used to login to transfer files?
