Ahh, I think you misunderstood what I meant. No, I did not mean the
command was no good. If it would not have worked believe me you would
known from me it didn't. Sorry you got all confused...

Yes it does look vaguely familiar, without the method for actually
creating the repo file of course. Just says "create the
/etc/yum.repos.d/webmin.repo file".

As I said "seems" to be invalid, my point was more that if you are
saying that the command is not good because:

"a regular user can't copy and paste the above code and execute it
unless they become root"

Then it "seems" an invalid point as you also have to be root to run the
rpm install.

On the other hand, if I have read this wrong and what you are saying is
the he needs to advise one to "become root" before running, then look
above that command on the wiki page because he *does* state that point.

Again, "seems" invalid as a regular user must also become root to
install the rpm.

If I have mis-read this then I am sorry but from what I am reading these
are the possible points I take from the statement.

I do not mean to offend, I just still do not see the validity in that
point.

I know you have to be root to run it. How is it invalid? It is no way
invalid if there was a webmin-release rpm. It is to me a shorter way of
doing it if there was a release package for the repository. That's in my
opinion.

Also, as to not being able to run that code as a regular user...

John, you have to be root to run the rpm command to install any package
so this seems to be an invalid point anyway.

Bullet point 6... here here I second that motion. Great job and thanks.

Forget that we are talking webmin or even repo's vs wget|rpm (all

Hmm that want work to good as there even is not a yum configuration
package for the webmin repo! Imagine that, a yum repo and no yum config
package? I don't like that. I did not realize that.

You have the user paste all those lines into a file and the make it
executable and then run it... a lot of un-needed steps.

Try this, (I have tested and it works great):

Copy this code [without the tags but do include the parenthesis ]

(echo "[Webmin]
name=Webmin Distribution Neutral
baseurl=http://download.webmin.com/download/yum
enabled=1" >/etc/yum.repos.d/webmin.repo
rpm --import http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc
yum -y install webmin)

Now instruct them to paste this right in the console, and press enter...
done!

Do whatever you want. I personally see no sense in such a page as you could
just add the repo definition to the Repositories page. The rest is nothing

Article is just fine, repo as well (been using your instructions on a
couple of machines - all ok, also asked Jamie to add usermin-webmail
to the repo, which he did). What's all the fuss about?

How about having the "10 latest articles in this language" on the
language FrontPages?

My python-foo is close to non-existent, but

does not look that complicated. Maybe if someone can find out how to
filter on namespaces for languages (a list of those could be generated
out of the i18n list in anaconda).

as a part of the staring at Moin code session, I was going to look at
how else we might do this. at the moment this looks fine, can we loose
the datestamp though. I dont think its needed. Also, I am guessing this
can move in as a code block above or below the CentOS screenshot on the
FrontPage

The route I was going to try and look at was parsing the RecentChanges
page, and get what we need from there.

So that big contributors have more entries than small contributors.

  - I would by default add a header/title in that macro and maybe even add

Implicitly the CentOS project watched and approves the content
in the wiki (compare contra the open access mailing lists and
forums).

Are we as a project willing to let links proliferate thru the
wiki at large to random non-CentOS controlled respository

The macro does not read the pages, so I don't think it really is
possible to do that. I think it is better to cleanly mark pages as
"under construction" or put those in a sandbox like
wiki.centos.org/UnderConstruction/FooBar. The latter could make it
possible to not show those pages.

Hmmm. If those would live in their own namespace ...

But then you probably cannot reference them with FirstnameLastname
anymore anywhere on the wiki, which would break standard behaviour on
some functions like lastchanged.

A 'whats new' section in a block, on the right side of the home-page,

it is the 'recommended' way to get a .repo file onto a machine, it also
automagically creates an update patch for the repo configs themselves.

There were still a few nits I declined to pick, and my grammar is also
sometimes sub-par.

The best way to do that is probably to get the release version of the
page linked in and announce it on the forum.

[Aside: Should there be some kind of release announcement system/list
for Wiki articles and other documentation?]

Not a WebMin user so I won't jump on that one. Good idea though, as it

Just brief look at the page, can do with some grammar checks I think. Also,

1) Have we asked for feedback on that article and perhaps solicit more
centos specific content from the webmin users.

2) Have we considered building a webmin-release-*-.rpm and asking for
inclusion in the webmin repo directly ?

[CentOS-docs] Comments on draft TipsAndTricks/InstallWebminRepo page

2009-05-13 Thread Phil Schaffner
Apropos http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/InstallWebminRepo

Suggested changes (mostly nit-picky :-) ...

Change:

Webmin is a web-based interface ...

to:

[http://www.webmin.com/index.html WebMin] is a web-based interface ...

Change:

When you install WebMin from repository yum keeps an eye on new WebMin
versions (for example, security-related releases) and when you issue
"yum upgrade" you will see if a new WebMin version available.

to:

When [http://www.webmin.com/ WebMin] is installed from a repository, bug
fixes and security patches can be automated as are other system updates,
and managed using yum.

Change:

Login to your server as root (you may login as user and then su to root
if your system is set up this way).

to:

[:TipsAndTricks/BecomingRoot:Become root.]

Change:

Then issue the following command to allow execution of this file by the
shell:

to:

Make the file executable:

Change:

Ok. WebMin repo and WebMin itself is now installed.

to:

The WebMin repo and application are now installed.

Very nice page. One of these days I'll get around to actually trying it.
