You can still install completely from the USB key - you just put the
diskboot.img on one partition, make it bootable, create a ext2/3
filesystem on the rest of the key and drop the dvd or cd isos into
there. Then run a regular install-from-hdd type install, anaconda will
find and use the isos from the key.

True, and would be glad to note that, but having it all on the USB key
is what caught my attention when I saw the original post.

Will add a link to the install guide.

None that I know of. Just a choice made by the guy on the CentOS Users
ML - John Doe - that is credited with the approach. Can look into it
more, but "if it ain't broke..."

As I said in the draft, haven't had time to test this myself yet, got to
free up a big enough device, and get a "round tuit". More changes will
undoubtedly be coming from that, and John Doe's additional comments on
the Users list that have not been incorporated yet, and naturally from

This looks good, however - the centos docs already include a section on
this, and dont they cover the same ground ?

right, you can just copy the isos to the usb key, and run a normal HDD
install process.

I am just saying we should / could cover that part as well - and/or add
some notes about that and point to the install guide. Iirc, the 5.3
install guide has more details.

Okay, but that only uses the diskboot.img and then installs the rest
over the network - that is where the wiki article differs, as it is
using the isos, so no network connectivity is required.

What's the reason for fat16? Why not ext2,3? Just curious.

[CentOS-docs] New page InstallFromUSBkey

2009-06-18 Thread Phil Schaffner
A new draft page has been created on how to set a USB key to install
CentOS from ISO images. This would be most useful for netbooks or other
systems without a CD/DVD drive.

http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey

Comments, please.
