Metro is the only way to get around in DC. Forget about driving, let alone

My sister had a nice place in Greenbelt, Maryland. Clean, low crime, not
too expensive, with an easy commute to the city on the Metro.
Also, my cousin recently bought a nice place in Woodbridge, VA, with the
same attributes.

Good luck with the new job.

I get contacted by recruiters almost daily.. Why is it that in a depressed
housing market, many employers won't even consider telecommuters?

I do understand the reasoning behind TSI and above clearance contracts, but
non secure and private employers really don't have a valid reason not to.

The chances of people, especially homeowners, considering relocation right
now is almost non existant.

I agree with this. Also, many more developers are able to work remotely and
live in 'less expensive' areas but still work for companies where the cost
of living is higher. I have a contract with a Fortune 500 company based in
Arkansas, my manager is in Pennsylvania, and I live and work from my home
office in Texas. It's a regular 40 hour a week contract position, they just
don't require to be on site. If they required me to be on site in
Pennsylvania, there's no way I would take the contract. I own a 4,000 square
foot house in the Dallas Fort Worth area for $200k but in Pennsylvania, that
would cost a minimum of $600k (if I'm lucky).

I suggest finding a way to hire EXPERIENCED remote employees. This will
expand your base of potential talent, and if you get someone experienced,
you have a better chance of not hiring someone who 'abuses' the opportunity
to work remotely, but instead, is actually more productive because they're
not always dealing with 'working in the office' issues such as jacking
around with the other developers and not working very hard.

Yes, there is risk with hiring remote employees, but it can work if you find
the right person. Maybe you can even offer to have them come work on site
for one month on a 'temporary' basis, and if you like them (and their work
ethic) and they like you, then go perm after a month and go back to work
from home. Even people with families can spring for a month on the road if
they know it could turn into a long term perm position where they can work
from home.

The technology is readily available for app develepors to work remotely
successfully, more companies need to just start doing it.

That's my 3 cents... ;)

Hey Everyone

This is not a job posting- just a frustrated question.

A year ago my company could post a CF job ad and get tens of responses. Now
we post one and get 2 or 3 bad resumes.

Now I realize that myspace has snatched up a lot of the CF'ers in Los
Angeles, but could they really have gotten them all? We have tried this
board, Craigslist, monster, dice - you name it - its just slim pickins.

We pay competitively and have a growing company and compelling product.

Any tips?

Help appreciated!

LOLone could argue the converse of that, too. Where are all the
jobs for the mid-level developers? Seriously, this is the first one I
have seen in a while. Being a mid-level developer myself, I keep an eye
out for them, somewhat. I am happy where I am at, but it never hurts to
look over the fence to the other side!

Let me ask a question - is $50K a good salary for a NYC job? In other
words, could one live comfortably with that salary in that region? I'd
take that salary in a heartbeat here in New Hampshire, but I'm sure that
our living expenses are much lower that in NY.

Where have all the CF developers gone? The only people I have applying

walks through the door who is at about the right level they want to be paid
the earth - if I wanted to pay $60-70k I could easily hire a very senior
developers (which seem to be easier to find too!).

All we want are 2 solid developers with 2-3 years experience. Is a $50k
salary really too little to expect to be able to find someone appropriate?

I just got off the phone with Bob and the job is real. He is going back to
his client and asking for a better job description... like what version of
CF, what OS, what database server. He also mentioned that there is a
background check involved and you must be a US citizen.. no sponsorships.

I explained to him that CSS is not a skill anyone is basing a job on.

From what I can guess about his client, they are looking for someone to
build intranet applications.. strong CF and some database skills.

I think Bob should also find out what part of the team you will be...
leader... member.. peon.

Rob in Tampa.

For a senior level position. Not really. The 100k part might be a bit
high but the starting number is inline I think.

Hi Mike,

You confused me even more. In your ad, you distinguished between software
developers and web site developers, but here you distinguish between
engineers and programmers. Are you saying software developers are like
engineers and web site developers are like programmers?

Johnny

Actually, it was the recruiters language, not mine. On the other hand, I am
writing an article to distinguish between programmers and software
engineers.
The difference can be summarized as an engineer has the time and ability to
plan out a whole application from 0 to finish. They use UML, OO, and full
documentation before beginning. A programmer usually does not have the time
or ability to do all that. They write code for an app that may be
standalone, may be an extension of something already in existence or a
patch
for a bug. There's little planning vs. implementing and usually little
documentation.
For example, I'm mainly a programmer. I don't have the luxury of doing full
scale planning for my own stuff or at my job. I can do the full engineer
thing with pages of docs, designs, etc. but it falls down to time. I need
to
implement something now, not 3-6 months down the road. An engineer is
looking at that time frame or more.
This is not to say an engineer is not a programmer or a programmer is not
an
engineer. It's saying that the approach, mindset and focus is different.
