Hi Alex,
That all makes sense. What tho about users browsing to IIS, will they URL to
one or the other or both somehow via a load balancer?
Regards, Carl.

 - On BOX1 connect IIS to the local cluster

 - On BOX2 connect IIS to the local cluster

 Does this sound correct?
 Is there anything I overlooked?

CFMX 10 cluster question

2013-10-16 Thread DeMarco, Alex

I am finally getting ready to jump on the CFMX10 cluster bandwagon. However, I
have a question to which I think I know the answer but figured I would check
here.

In my sandbox setup I have 2 IIs 7.5 servers with CFM 10 installed and 1 CFMX
instance defined on each server.

To make clustering really work I think I need to do the following:

- On BOX1 remote register BOX2's CFMX instance

- On BOX2 remote register BOX1's CFMX instance

- On BOX1 create a cluster with both the local cfmx instance and the
remote registered instance from BOX2

- On BOX2 create a cluster with both the local cfmx instance and the
remote registered instance from BOX1

- On BOX1 connect IIS to the local cluster

- On BOX2 connect IIS to the local cluster

Does this sound correct?

Is there anything I overlooked?

Thanks!

- Alex

Validation Query Question

2013-03-12 Thread DeMarco, Alex

I have a question regarding Validation Query:

The CF 9 online help says this about the Validation Query:
Called when a connection from the pool is reused. This can slow query response
time because an additional query is generated. You should specify this just
before restarting the database to verify all connections, but remove the
validation query after restarting the database to avoid any performance loss.
If you are pointing to an Oracle RAC Cluster containing 2 nodes and want to
ensure that the RAC node the connection is currently bound to is viable doesn't
it make sense to leave the validation query in place? (select 1 from dual;)
regardless of the small performance hit I would rather prefer that my
connection is viable.

What is everyone's opinion on this?

Thank you in advance.

How to deal with outbound http calls

2012-11-18 Thread DeMarco, Alex

Good Morning,

I have a web app that at times can make many outbound http calls. For example
I have a page that collects various rss feeds from other sites and then parses
them and finally displays them all on one page for the user. I have a few
questions.:

Is there a limit to the number of outbound http calls CFMX 9 can make?

Is there a way I can see the total number of outbound http calls going on?

It would seem to me that this is a poor design under load conditions. Is there
a better way to fetch off site content?

Thanks!

Assuming you aren't in a cluster, some creative use of CFLOCK would do the
trick. If you aren't familiar with CFLOCK, check the documentation. You could
also reduce the number of threads as Russ suggests, however I would recommend
putting some code in place to do something when that max is reached or else
you're just creating a new problem from the old one.

Is there a way I can see the total number of outbound http calls going on?

Outside of CF there would be a number of network monitoring tools you could use
for this. You could also do some creative application or session scope
monitoring of start and stop counts for certain activities.

Are you doing it in realtime when a user's requests a page? Yes, that is poor
design.

Try loading the content using a background process of some sort (ie:
scheduled task) and then staging it all in a table. That way when the user
requests the page you aren't triggering a bunch of CFHTTP calls.

Another wierd set of errors

2012-11-18 Thread DeMarco, Alex

Check out this log segment.
Everything starts out fine, and then the sessions start to back up... Then
all I see are Connection reset by peer errors. Then if you scroll to the
bottom suddenly everything corrects itself. This happens from time to time and
I have been able to catch it when it does to see what is happening.

Does any know who is throwing the Connection reset by peer error? Is it the
jrun connector? (no obvious errors in log)

Any pointers would be appreciated .. thanks!

iis7.5 connector question

Hello All,

I was reviewing this page:

http://blogs.adobe.com/cfdoc/tag/coldfusion-9

Specifically the section about increasing worker threads.. My question is that
I have using IIS7.5 (no iis6 compat mode installed) yet my connector files are
all jrun_iis6_wildcard I dropped all my connections and redid them and
they are still jrun_ii6 .. is this correct??

Everything seems to work I am just concerned that it is wrong...

Thanks!

It is the correct connector, for some Bizzare reason Adobe never changed the
filename to jrun_IIS7_wildcard, which clearly does cause some confusion.

what you need to do is remove the ColdFusion WILDCARD handler, as this
is what is processing your jsp pages and overriding your weblogic JSP
handler.
just use a standard handler for .cfm pages

no you need to actually remove the WILDCARD handler completely otherwise
this will still process JSP pages.
If you are using a bog standard install, then you will have 2 type sof
handlers setup.
the wildcard handler, which points to jrun_iis6_wildcard.dll, this
processes every single request to see if it is a CF or JSP file and if
so passes it off to coldfusion. This is most likley your problem. DELETE
this one from the site in question.

And you also probably a bunch of regular handlers for each file
extension which point to jrun_iis6.dll jrun_iis6.dll don't even work and
have not worked on any server I have setup for years, so no idea why
they even get created, So just edit the regular handlers and set them to
use jrun_iis6_wildcard.dll If they don't exist already then just create
one for each extension you need CF to process.

Presumably you have already mapped the .jsp handler to weblogic.

Issue with decrypt in CFMX 9.01

2012-10-09 Thread DeMarco, Alex

I had an old app running on CFMX 9 32bit on Win 2003, We recently
started testing it on CFMX 9.01 (fully patched) Windows 2008 r2 64bit.

We are getting this error:

An error occurred while trying to encrypt or decrypt your input string:
The input and output encodings are not same..

I do understand what the error means however, I do not understand why it
is happening with all things relatively equal between the old and new
server.

Does CFMX 9.01 handle encryption of cookies differently than 9 did?

Here is the snippet that is failing:

CFSET UserInfo = Decrypt(Cookie.pwdEncryptedID, Attributes.ENCRYPTKEY)

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

- Alex

RE: CF9 on Win2k8R2 64bit no more connectivity

2012-07-25 Thread DeMarco, Alex

What version of windows? Standard

Is this a hosted server? No in house server(s), dedicated

Both of our web servers are behind a F5BigIP device and then behind a
set of ASA 5540s

What type of internet connectivity? Multiple T-1's

No Cpu or mem spike when the issue is occurring.

When the issue is happening I can rdp in but can't get to anything
outside of the box, telnet, ping, web, ssh.

Unfortunately I've had to fall back to our older IIS 6 boxes so I do not
have a current netstat to show you. There were a lot of TIME_WAIT's

When the issue was happening and I run this netstat -n | find : /c the
number hits around 3000, but fluctuates. It's like connections are not
being released fast enough.

This is my first usage of 2k8 with IIS7.5 is there tweaking to the IP
stack that is need for iis 7.5?

Thanks for replying..

RE: CF9 on Win2k8R2 64bit no more connectivity

2012-07-25 Thread DeMarco, Alex

I working to create a load test on the server to try and reproduce the issue.
I have 6 of them all exhibit the same issue. I am pretty certain they are not
compromised. I already had an established RDP connectoin when the issue was
going on, but will test that if I can reproduce the issue. Getting a
repoduceable scenario is key.. I'll post again once I get that to happen.
There are 2 nic's both bound to the same network.

thanks for the feedback

A tracert to an external IP is going to tell you where things are stopping.

3000 connections doesn't really sound all that high. Even with ones
lingering. But I would ask do you know what those 300 connections are?
Any possibility the machine is compromised, and something like a bot
is saturating the network connection.

The most strange part is you can RDP while this is occurring. If
limitations are being hit then I doubt you'd be able to RDP in.

Is there more than one NIC? If you are RDP'ing via an internal NIC,
which by-passes the firewall and an external NIC exists, then I can
see you being able to RDP in, but not get out on through an external
NIC if it's being saturated somehow, or the firewall is hitting a
session limit.

RE: JRun 4 Updater 3 Now Available

2004-03-19 Thread DeMarco, Alex
Note: I currently have a bug open regarding JRUN 4 Update 3 bug 54614.
If you have a context root of / for cfmx. CFMX will not work... this
appears to happen under W2k with IIS and Linux with Apache.

Subject: Re: JRun 4 Updater 3 Now Available

	Just to clarify.

The vast majority of what's in JRun Updater 3 is what was made
available to CF customers in CFMX 6.1

Updater 3 gets these fixes to JRun 4 customers.

There is a some small number items fixed in Updater 3 that
aren't in CFMX 6.1.We're working on a cumulative hotfix due in April
to make those available for CFMX 6.1 Server-configuration customers.

Some other fixes available ***POST-U3*** (didn't make U3) for
JRun and CFMX customers through hotfixes + other random thoughts I'll
share:
(note: all of these will be in the 6.1 cumulative hotfix due in
April)

	- we expect to release new datadirect drivers soon to fix the
oracle and sqlserver issues customers have reported (no more data,
arrayindexoutofbounds, hangs) with the 3.2 drivers shipped with JRun 4
Updater 2 and CFMX 6.1. They are still in testing mode.JRun4 Updater 3
got the 3.1+ drivers since they were the most stable.3.1+ was also
made available as a hotfix for CFMX customers with issues. We expect to
replace the 3.1+ for JRun and CFMX customers with newer drivers in the
next few weeks if testing goes well.

Please email me if you'd like to participate in the beta.

	- some connector enhancements - including failover in clustering
working as expected (we will have a hotfix for this soon- please email
me).These fixes are long overdue.

	- connection pooling fixes for JRun datasources to match the
pooling fixes for ColdFusion datasources (see technote below).

http://www.macromedia.com/support/coldfusion/ts/documents/conn_pool_hotf
ix.htm

(for apps like AbleCommerce that use JRun datasources ie
entered through the JMC and available to all instances).Users of JRun
J2EE CFMX versions would need these if they have connection-limited
datasources *AND* the underlying application used JRun datasources.

This fix will be made available in a few days.

	- Client variable purge fixes for SQL and registry datasources
(there were 4 bugs fixed). This often showed up when the server hung
every hour on the hour for the maintenance task of purging client
variables older than [N] days. This hits many customers if they use
registry and the registry grows to say 50,000 or 100,000+ entries.
SQL datasources are recommended but even if users switched, the registry
purges still occurred (in addition to SQL purges) and could hang the
system. The fix now respects the unchecked purge setting for all
client datasource types.

These are the ones that come to mind that get reported most
often hanging systems.

	***For Dick AppleBaum***:
	1) JRun and, therefore, CF use the JVM 1.3 instead of 1.4 (even
with
the fix postedChristian Cantrell's blog site)

Part of this is the installer not allowing the selection.
There are also issues with using JDK 1.4 (jvm.cfg issues). We've fixed
this post-Updater 3 in the launcher.(jrun stub)
Please email me and I can get you some code to test.

	2) When starting a CF 6.1 JRun server instance, the scheduler
does not
	start (see below).

I've heard of this sporadically but can't reproduce it.
Perhaps send me your neo-cron.xml and jrun.xml and I'll see if I can
repro it on my machine.6.1 definitely massaged this .xml file on an
existing server.Perhaps the one in your new instance got corrupted
somehow.

Optmize Database Connectivity HELP

We are starting to run into Database timeout problems. When our
Webserver(IIS, Jrun w/CFMX 6.1) gets really busy, CFMX reports timeout

I've increased the query Template cache's but that does not appear to

What can I do under the hood to improve performance?

Monitor Dbase Connections

Is there a way in CFMX(running under a Jrun server) to tell how many

cacheRealPath question

2003-10-01 Thread Demarco, Alex
We run the full Jrun with CFMX 6.1 deployed within it.Occasionally we get
a problem where CFMX says a file does not exist but it does.Restart the
instance and it is fine for a while.

I found a forum message that says to change this line in your
server/jrun.xml file:

attribute name=cacheRealPathtrue/attribute to false

But this attribute is not present in the jrun.xml file, so my question is
where do I put it in the file? Is there a particular place?

Thanks!

It depends on a number of factors. If you want robustness (so one
website doesn't trample on another) then yes, multiple instances will
help - and give you a separate CF Admin for each instance. But you also
need to consider the number of CPUs and the amount of RAM on your
server (assuming you're talking about everything on one server). You'd
need to experiment, performance-wise, but I'd say not to have more
instances that you have CPUs for example.

We have two instances (each with a 2-3Gb JVM heap) on each of our 8
CPU, 8Gb RAM servers but then we're running a very high traffic site
(up to 20,000 concurrent sessions during peak traffic).

I had the exact same problem... index.cfm failed with 404, renamed to
index.htm and it worked. But, all fixed now.

Someone had run a hardening program on the IIS server and it changed the
permission settings on the directory that had .cfm files in it.

For any website that has cold fusion (.cfm files) on IIS, you must set the
sharing permissions to also allow Everyone Read. Once you do that, the
cold fusion file will run fine.

Don't forget to let the permissions propagate down thru the sub directories
or you'll be back again doing each one of them.

Understand??

ps: I didn't see an answer here so if I overlooked it and someone already
answered the question, sorry for the duplicate...

Index.cfm problem again

2003-08-27 Thread DeMarco, Alex
OK I recreated the site and deleted the old one and this problem still
happens. Any other suggestions. Upgrading to 6.1 is not an option right

Very strange problem. We run a variety of .cfm pages, we decided to convert
our homepage over from index.html to index.cfm, when I point IIS to run
index.cfm and the default page we get a 404 error, if I rename the index.cfm
to index1.cfm and repoint IIS it works fine. If I go directly to
http://ourwebsite/inde.cfm, I get a jrun servlet error and the url changes
to /CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm with a 404 error.

What could be causing this? The IIS settings look fine, if I copy the
index.cfm to another website on the same box and point to it everything is
fine.

The directory is there with execute permission..

What do you mean by and the App removed?

Does the JRunScripts virtual dir exist (with execute permissions and the App
removed) on that web site?

We usually get problems with sites if this dir does not exist

OK I recreated the site and deleted the old one and this problem still
happens. Any other suggestions. Upgrading to 6.1 is not an option right
now.

The IIS settings look fine, if I copy the
index.cfm to another website on the same box and point to it everything is
fine.

JRUN 4 SP2 with CFMX 6.0 updater3 and Win2k

Suggestions?

Try the fix anyway. I've had the same problem since the first release and
while 6.1 deals with it a lot better, it still happened on one install (out
of 4).

I have not upgraded to 6.1 yet.. Sorry I did not mention that earlier.

Check out the front of House of Fusion and the note about ODBC

  Hello,

Everytime I verify a datasource in CF Admin I get 2 errors in the
  event log:

  One for Sequelink:

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( SequeLink ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. The following information is part of the event: Network
problem, connection unexpectedly closed by peer

  One for CFMX ODBC Agent:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ColdFusion MX ODBC
Agent ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the
necessary registry information or message DLL files to display
messages from a remote computer. The following information is part
of the event: ColdFusion MX ODBC
  [EMAIL PROTECTED],ErrorCode=2300,ErrorMessage=Network
problem, connection unexpectedly closed by peer.

Yet the datasources verify and appear to be working correctly.

Could I have a corrupt file someplace? If I reinstall CFMX and the
ODBC Agent files should that solve the problem?

I have a client who contracted MSBlaster yesterday... and ever since, CF
isn't properly serving up pages. No error comes up, but the page displayed
is blank.

A view of the source shows this:

!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN HTMLHEAD
META http-equiv=Content-Type content=text/html;
charset=windows-1252/HEAD BODY/BODY/HTML

After checking the server, the files are all still correct... they haven't
been changed or overwritten.

Has anybody else experienced this? HTML pages are served up without any
problem.

These 2 messages are no big deal and a known issue too. Basically, in the
cfadmin we make a call to the odbc services to see if they are running, and
for some reason the odbc services like to log that call in the event viewer.

Although a little annoying they don't mean anything is wrong and
functionally everything is working properly.
