Well I think perspective makes a difference. Hopefully you can understand
that I'm exposed to much more of the community than those on this list might
be - especially the anti-Adobe sentiment. 3 years ago when I blogged about
OpenBD, I was right to be skeptic given the history of New Atlanta. Back
then I feared that this would cause a divide in our already small community,
which it unfortunately has (whether you choose to believe it or not).

If you need any evidence of the anti-CF comments, feel free to browse my
blog comments. Some are quick to forget all that CF has done in the past and
continues to do to support this community. I think some also forget that the
ColdFusion team is made up of human beings with real feelings. We pour our
hearts and energy into this product and community. Then along comes a few
people who decide to build a near identical clone of ColdFusion. After
several failed years of trying to compete with CF commercially, they give
the product away through open source and market directly to ColdFusion
customers. Suddenly they are heros and can do no wrong. How do you think
this makes the _people_ behind CF feel? So yes, I am commonly guilty of
letting my emotions get the better of me and I fight back when I should take
the high road and ignore our critics. I'm human... and I'm proud of the work
my team does. Whether the threat is PHP or Railo, I'm going to defend my
 product and my team.

Which ever way you slice it, OpenBD/Railo are the direct competitors of
ColdFusion. I know some wish that wasn't the case, but it that is the
reality of the world we live in.

The point of my message was to express unity with Russ's comments. However,
Russ has a tendency to throw in jabs about Adobe's view on the open source
 competitors.

As far as OpenCFML goes. It failed from a lack of contribution from Railo
and OpenBD. The only thing I'm guilty of was being honest with community.

cfchart issues... (sub domain)

2005-08-18 Thread Tony Weeg
hi there.

still battling the sub domain and the cfchart, where it just doesnt show the
swf. if you right click in the area where you should be able to see
the chart...
you see the normal right click context menu of any flash swf. however its
the chart is just not there. if i sniff the http headers, i see an object
not found error.

some of you suggested that i have a virtual directory
under the subdomain, that is the /cfide directory under the
server root (i tried all the CFIDE directories for that matter)
and that didnt help. any other ideas?

http://reports.navtrak.net/test_reportLogGraph.cfm is the url.

you can click on the top report, and you will see what i mean.

IF i put this same file under www.navtrak.net, its all good.

HELP :) if you can... thank you.

syntactical waste.
code bloat whatever.

2000 lines of logic isnt CRAZY.

i understand not recommended, but an IDE should have some fuzzy line where
its performance gets dumb, and under that its ok.

thats wrong.

homesite works fine with the file.
dreamweaver works fine with the file.
cfeclipse doesnt.

its the IDE.

Well no... that's not why I advocate not making files larger than 500
lines... I advocate not making these hideously large files because
they cause all sorts of other problems, and so... given that being the
case, the issue of an IDE having a problem with a file over 500 lines
imo should be a moot issue, since you should never run into that
 problem anyway.

To put it another way... I don't complain about the fact that I may
run into problems sending 10MB+ files via my email client because imo,
I shouldn't be trying to use my email client to do that. So by that
same token, why would I complain that an IDE has a problem keeping up
with a lousy, monolithic, likely improbable to maintain file that I
shouldn't be creating in the first place?

Admittedly, I also write a lot of templates 10 lines... although
these have never caused me any problems.

I probably do have one or two files that break that rule -- I know I
have a few CFC's in the framework that are larger (I don't recall off
the top of my head if any are over 500 lines), but by no means are
they ever mulitple thousdands of lines. CFC's are a bit of a minor
exception in some cases because you can get a lot of reuseable
functionality in a single template but barring that, the larger a
template becomes, the more problematic it is for one reason or
another. If it's not the IDE, then it _will_ be something else. In
most cases I see a lot of copy-paste coding, lack of encapsulation (or
cohesion if you like), and or simple syntactical waste in larger
 templates.

i typically write a LARGE file that does most if not all functionality.
then ill break that up as i see it fit. reuse where i can.
cfc where it makes sense, and then move on to the next project.

i should have that option, or it should state that under a certain
number of lines
i can expect good behaviour, and stay away from too many.

We have a very old computer programmer named Manfred that works for our
university. He basically built our legacy system that is soon to be
  replaced by a packaged product.

When people would try to refer to his home-built system, they would
refer to it as the AS400 program, AS400 student system, Business System,
Enterprise Business System, Aspen, Sequoia, etc. It had so many names

So, one day, I coined the term, Mansoft, and people knew exactly what
  it meant.

A coworker of mine had domain adminstrator permissions, but certainly
did not need those permissions for his job responsibilities. I made it
clear to our VP that we really needed to restrict access to the domain

Well, my coworker ran to HR and put in a complaint that I was harrassing
Manfred, and my coworker, by using the term Mansoft. He said it was
derogatory to Manfred and it affected my coworker personally because he
had to tolerate listening to me say it.

So, my pussy-assed VP at the time told me not to say Mansoft anymore.
The HR director said it was not an issue and the entire thing was
dropped and not put on my record. However, I still can't believe that
my VP actually caved and told me not to say it anymore.

You see, that is the power of fear. And corporate lawyers know how to

we get no chart, and if i sniff the http headers, i see file not

essentially it cant find /cfide as thats under the main www.navtrak.net.

is there a way to configure this so that both can show cfcharts?

we get no chart, and if i sniff the http headers, i see file not found...

I'd personally recommend setting all your sites up that way, and just
leaving CFIDE inside the CFMX install's web root. Makes for easier
upgrades than if you move/copy the folder to somewhere else to make it
 web accessible.

if you bring your family to max, you wont get as much out of the

if i go with my wife, i spend more time with her and not doing conf. stuff ...

it wasnt too bad, as we were in new orleans last time, but i would

For what it's worth, I've done this in Apache with a 404 error page -
the only problem with that is it is a 404 error =)

so something like www.foo.com/index.cfm would contain your tinyurl
creation form and then the url could be www.foo.com/523

Apache can't find a file or directory named 523 so it loads the 404
error page, which I've configured to be /404.cfm.

The main url is still available, so then I just

 cfset urlid = getFileFromPath(cgi.script_name) (or cgi.path_info, I
can't remember which) and do the database query and then redirect.

mod_rewrite is probably much nicer way to do it =)

It's really simple and basic but might be a good foundation for someone to
 build on.

 1. Uses Application.cfc - onSessionStart to track visitors by IP address.

 2. Affiliate.cfc handles most of the tasks involved.

3 I included 3 tables in an sql file.

 4. Admin area for site owner to add, edit, update all info. (there's no
delete as of now, you can do that part yourself)

 5. Admin area for affiliates to login and see what commissions they've
 generated.

 6. Site owner can set different commission percentages for different
 affiliates.

 7. Simply give your affiliate a link to your site and just add ?AFFID=111,
111 being whatever number you assign the affiliate in your admin area.

If you have some positive input for my program I'll gladly accept your
suggestions. I'm sure it can be improved upon by 200%. To the guys out there

cfmx7 hanging and then dead.

2005-07-13 Thread Tony Weeg
Hardware/Software: CFMX7 (no updaters), Windows 2000 Server, IIS5, SQL
Server 2000

Issue: While doing backups or any DTS transactions on a SQL Server
2000 database. Attempt query from CFMX7 to SQL Server, it hangs, and
hangs, and hangs, and then we have to restart the CF Server to get
anything working again.

This is a repeatable problem.

This was a problem with 6.0 and then it seemed like 6.1 fixed the
issue, and now 7 seems to be doing the same thing.

Does the JDBC driver (macromedia_drivers.jar) updater fix this?

The one mentioned here:

i had the same problem, where i was using a different domain for the
ssl part of my cart, and when i made the change, it dropped all
session vars...

:( i had to get off the shared ssl train, and just purchase a full
ssl cert, and the hosting company (www.experthost.com) applied it to
my domain, and all is well now.

something is up with session vars and going from one name to another
name (even if its the same box!!!)

larry...

im close, but not done with my version, or i'd offer that up.

however, im close, and i just have to get my wifes website done first.

you can view what ive got so far at

www.mydinnercompany.com

you can look at the schedule by clicking, well, on the schedule link.

my plan was to make this a cfc that spits out a calendar object, complete
with some other values (a string of events, and id's) and then make that open
source, with the sql for the table of events, etc...

no time... but you can see where i am so far there.

later.

I am toying with a few different methods of creating a database schema
that will hold information about some rental properties the university

My first method was to create a schema that consisted of many tables,
one for each attribute, and then relate them to the properties table
 with FKs.

 This is my diagram:
 http://acelinkdev.evansville.edu/Temp/Method1.gif
(This leads to many tables, but easy to control referential integrity.)

My second method was to create a single 'attributes' table that
contained, basically, all the other tables that stored attributes about
 a house.

 This is my diagram:
 http://acelinkdev.evansville.edu/Temp/Method2.gif
(Note: Not all attributes were added to the Property table for lack of
 time.)
(This leads to fewer tables, but harder to control referential
 integrity.)

My third method was to add a many-to-many relation between Property and
 Attributes.
 (No diagram for this method.)

With the third method, would I put *only* the options in join table or
*all* of them? For example, street is not an optional attribute,
 however, porch may be.

Can anyone give some suggestions on how best to design this schema?
Eventually, we may add the capability to search and filter items based
on select boxes or check boxes.

 Thanks

questions asking if ArrayNew or NewArray is the correct syntax,
etc., but it's not a killer. I found the Brain Bench Oracle admin tests
to be a lot harder, personally.

Basically, if you use CF in your everyday work and know what you're
doing, you'll at least get a basic certification. And definitely try
the exam buster - it'll clue you into how the test is presented and
you'll be a little more comfortable with the whole thing when you take
 it (YMMV).

I'm a terrible tester, but still managed to do respectably well on the
cert test on my first shot. I know I tripped up on some of the more,
shall we say, circuitously presented problems, and there's a lot of
questions asking if ArrayNew or NewArray is the correct syntax,
etc., but it's not a killer. I found the Brain Bench Oracle admin tests
to be a lot harder, personally.

Basically, if you use CF in your everyday work and know what you're
doing, you'll at least get a basic certification. And definitely try
the exam buster - it'll clue you into how the test is presented and
you'll be a little more comfortable with the whole thing when you take
 it (YMMV).

That's what I used as a prep. It was pretty good at pointing out a lot
of the changes between CF5 and CFMX- I had never used CFMX before the
test, so that was important. Good mix of questions, and a large enough
list of questions that it took awhile before I got to the point where I
was doing well simply because I'd seen the questions a few times
 before... ;)

I think the actual test was noticeably harder though, but maybe I just
 test badly.

I'm not sure the way their system works, but it seems like it would be
easy to make a URL-forwarding system using nothing but application.cfm
and index.cfm. application.cfm would contain a lookup system that would
intercept the incoming url and look it up against a database of
   short-to-long url conversions. index.cfm would do a server-side
re-direct to the long url. simple.

You _probably_ need the xml you return as a string (not a ColdFusion

 I right?

You can either use cfxml which will produce an error if the xml is
invalid and then use toString() to return the text of the xml, or you
can use cfsavecontent to generate the packet, which won't produce
any errors if the xml is invalid, but doesn't require you to conver
 it.

 Here are samples:

 cffunction name=getXML
   cfquery ../cfquery

   cfxml variable=mypacket
 packet
   cfouptut query=...

   /cfoutput
 /packet
   /cfxml

   cfreturn toString(mypacket)

 Or

 cffunction name=getXML
   cfquery ../cfquery

   cfsavecontent variable=mypacket
 packet
   cfouptut query=...
 morenodes //more
   /cfoutput
 /packet

QueryNew() question

2005-05-09 Thread Tony Weeg
Hola peeps!

Is there a way to tell the queryNew() function what datatype a
particular column is?

i have a query that i make that is the result set of a query or two,
and i have a total column that i write a number to. the cells may be
null, may have a number, but NOTHING else.

select sum(Total)
from getThis
where date = '05/01/2005'

and its telling me that it cant perform that operation where an
operand is of type varchar. well its not. its numeric.

any ideas?

thanks

queryNew() object strangeness

2005-05-09 Thread Tony Weeg
ok. im going to try to explain this the best i can.

on my cfm template. if i make a QofQ on a queryNew()
created query object, then cfmx will display the date column
in a cfdump like this...

 {ts '2005-05-01 00:00:00'}

however, if i take out the QofQ, it displays it like this.

05/01/2005

the QofQ code is above the cfdump in the code.

can anyone possibly explain?

thanks

Re: queryNew() object strangeness

2005-05-09 Thread Tony Weeg
its ALMOST like the QofQ looks at it, realizes its a datetime field,
and that kinda triggers cfmx into thinking, oh yeah, this is a
datetime field, so ill display it like that...

maybe?

Re: QueryNew() question

2005-05-09 Thread Tony Weeg
well.. i figured it out. i added a 0 to all columns that were null
and then it worked.

its like it didnt know what to do with the null value. not null
as a string, but no value.

anyway, i got it working, and i do not see anywhere that would do
anything to make a 7 anything other than a 7

is there a such thing?

i mean, i know the diff, between a string that is 7 and a numeric
value of 7 but other than that, you could probably argue that a 7 is a
7, right?

Prolly epoch time, seconds since jan 1 1970?

and sure, you can do that.

cfset myNewDate = dateAdd('s',millisecondsValueHere,'01/01/1970 00:00:00.000')

Could not convert the value 1.10838972E12 to an integer because it
cannot fit inside an integer.

If you're on CF7, give this a whirl:

On CF6.1 it doesn't work, because CF insists on using an int for the
value, which it overflows. CF7 might be different.

Debugging for only one directory?

2005-04-27 Thread Tony Weeg
i wonder if it would be a dumb thought or not, but to
be able to turn on debugging for one directory on one application
rather than the WHOLE server would be cool?

no?

huh? a dialect is a regional variety of a language differing from the
standard language according to the library of congress. and many wags
on the unicode list often define a language as a dialect with an army
