You do ? Why can't you install Builder into this 'master' install and use that

Re: IntelliJ CFML Plugin

2008-12-03 Thread Aaron Rouse
Very good point, I personally do not see what the big hangup on some of
these price tags are. If the tools truly make people more efficient then
they pay for themselves rather quickly. I personally just in the past
couple of weeks have spent somewhere around $2k on various tools and most
certainly could have found free ones to do each of those jobs but I found
the commercial ones to be much more efficient for me.

Re: IntelliJ CFML Plugin

2008-12-03 Thread Kenton Gray
In response to the issue of cost, I understand the sentiment but if you are
doing any extensive Java or Javascript editing professionally I think the issue
is moot.

I've used CFEclipse since the first week it was released and I appreciate
Spike's and Mark's work on making the first real CF IDE, but I think IntelliJ
is far superior to Eclipse as a multi language IDE. The CFML plugin is not
feature complete with CFEclipse but the rate of improvement is quite
encouraging!

I'd recommend anyone who has large javascript libraries to try out IntelliJ and
see how nice it is to have an IDE that treats javascript like a real
programming language, I've used Aptana and JSEditor in eclipse and they really
can't compare. You can actually refactor methods and variables across an entire
project.

Also I have to mention the java refactorings available in IntelliJ are very
impressive and time saving, I haven't really used the Flex/AS3 editor but from
what I understand you get to use the same refactorings.

Just my 2 cents, and again I don't work for JetBrains but I do really enjoy the
IDE, and find its cost to be worthwhile.

Kenton

PS, if cost is truly a big deal and you don't mind living on the edge you can
use the EAP releases (a beta) which includes a 30 day trial and is released
once a week.

Re: IntelliJ CFML Plugin

2008-12-03 Thread Barney Boisvert
The actual plugin works fine, but it breaks the Eclipse-i-ness of your
install because of the way it's packaged. Specifically, since it
installs itself as a separate program, and then links itself into your
existing Eclipse installation, you lose the ability to have a shared
Eclipse installation with everyone using the same binaries across the
network. That makes keeping things synced across a large team
enormously easier, but FlexBuilder prevents that usage model. Hence a
separate Eclipse instance for FlexBuilder.

barneyb

In any case, that's a quite a wadge to fork out for an IDE, even

Quick note Mark, I know you cleared it up about being confused with which
product was being talked about but (as someone else mentioned) IntelliJ does
give free licenses to open source projects, so you would probably be able to
get it (IntelliJ) for free. That being said I hope Adobe considers the same
license for Bolt folks like you that work on big oppen source projects that
really help the community deserve the best editor (I'm assuming it will be
the best :) ).

Re: IntelliJ CFML Plugin

2008-12-02 Thread Barney Boisvert
$250 is cheap for an commercial IDE. CFEclipse is great and I use it
pretty much exclusively, but if a $250 offering can save you 1 minute
per day in productivity, it's worth it after only a year at $50/hour.
If your time is worth more or your license lasts longer (both quite
likely), it only need save you a few handfuls of seconds to be worth
it and that's easy to come by with optimized autocomplete alone.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for the best IDE to be freely available
for personal use since I do a lot of development outside a
working-for-pay arrangement, but CFEclipse adequately fills that
niche.

A much larger stumbling block for Bolt will be the Eclipse
integration, I think. Eclipse users don't want to have their Eclipse
environment hosed by some plugin (cough...FlexBuilder...cough). I run
duplicate Eclipse environments (one for Flex, one for everything else)
for just this reason. If you just want a ColdFusion IDE, it doesn't
matter, but if you use the Eclipse platform for CFML (and Java,
Groovy, PHP - ick, database, JS, CSS, etc.) development it's a bigger
deal.

Ahhh! $250 for IntelliJ. I thought you meant for Bolt.

Makes more sense now.

All I'm hoping for is a lower price than that when Bolt is released.

It has only been released for a month, but it is rapidly improving.
In my opinion IntelliJ is far superior to Eclipse, and has the most
amazing Javascript editor I've ever seen (drill down, autocomplete
and jsdocs support). To top it off they have Flex 3 support (with
debugging) so you can do all your Adobe coding from one place.

It is still early but if anyone wants to use a great Java IDE and
have Coldfusion support this is the plugin to watch!

 Here is the download link:
 http://plugins.intellij.net/plugin/?id=3571

Here is the blog to watch for updates:
 http://coldfusion-in-idea.blogspot.com/

Also the JetBrains guys have been very responsive to bug reports
and feature requests, so if you have any features you want, drop
 them a line.

PS: I don't work for JetBrains, I just think they have the best IDE
 around

IntelliJ CFML Plugin

2008-12-02 Thread Kenton Gray
With all the excitement over Bolt, I thought this would be a good time to let
everyone know the smart guys at JetBrains have been working on a CFML plugin.

It has only been released for a month, but it is rapidly improving. In my
opinion IntelliJ is far superior to Eclipse, and has the most amazing
Javascript editor I've ever seen (drill down, autocomplete and jsdocs support).
To top it off they have Flex 3 support (with debugging) so you can do all your
Adobe coding from one place.

It is still early but if anyone wants to use a great Java IDE and have
Coldfusion support this is the plugin to watch!

Here is the download link:

Also the JetBrains guys have been very responsive to bug reports and feature
requests, so if you have any features you want, drop them a line.
