RE: Migrating ODBC Datasources

Conversely, if you are running Enterprise, then you can install that on your
target server and use the archive (.car) functionality to move your
datasources over, and then upgrade in place on the new server.

Ah, that sounds interesting. I didn't want to break anything, and
wanted to leave the CF5 running on the old server. Just setting up a
new one with CFMX that I want to roll-out in place of the CF5 if all
looks good. But would like to keep the CF5 server running just in
case.

If you upgrade in place on the CF 5 server, you should be able to move the
neo-query.xml file from the upgraded server to your new server.

Of course you can upgrade in place and use the built in web server and it
'should' import your datasources and not disturb your 'real' web server.
Then you can uninstall the 'upgrade' and I can find another reason to use

When you install CFMX on the same machine and choose the upgrade option,
then during the post-install migration wizard your CF5 datasources will
be imported.

The best documentation comes from the CFMX 6.0 docs for the CF5
Migration Guide,
http://livedocs.macromedia.com/coldfusion/6/Migrating_ColdFusion_5_Applications/cf_migration_guide.htm

While a detail or two might vary with CFMX 7, the migration works the
same overall.

Yes, I believe what you are saying is correct.  I generate an ODBC Error on one page (call it test.cfm), then I call another page (page2.cfm) that has an ODBC call on it, the query from test.cfm will appear with the error message on Page2.cfm.  To fix the problem, if I remove the query from test.cfm and call a blank page (test.cfm) the problem goes away.  Totally weird...

No - but I'm not sure I understand. You mean that if one page causes ANY type of error - all subsequent calls generate
the same error (for any page)?  Is there a specific error?  Can you duplicate this with a syntax error?

This is totally weird.  But what seems to be happening is that if an ODBC Error is generated by one page anywhere on
my server, any other ODBC calls will generate the error message  for that first page that caused the error.  Yesterday
it crashed the server.  However, once I run the page that caused the error with the error removed, everything works
fine.  It doesn't matter what kind of ODBC driver it is, I've done it with Client Access, Rumba and SQL Server.  I'm
running CF 5.

Has anyone ever seen something like this?

Yes. You can use CFREGISTRY to read the HKLM\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI key. If
you want native data sources, you can read the appropriate CF registry key.

> Also, given a datasource, is there a way to get a list of
> tables from that datasource?

I don't know if there's a generic ODBC command to get a list of tables (I
seem to remember something about SQLTables, but it's been a while since I've
looked at lower-level ODBC programming), and even if there was, I don't know
how you'd access that at the passthrough SQL level that you use to interact
with ODBC datasources from within CF.

However, most databases have this sort of functionality, and you could
simply look at the registry info for a given datasource to see what database
it uses, then use the database-specific method to get the list of tables.
For example, in SQL Server, you can use the sp_tables stored procedure.

Howdy,

Once upon a time, I could set up ODBC datasources through CF
Administrator. Recently, after adding a datasource name and clicking on
the browse button to go select the database file to complete the
installation, no directories ever come up in the window that is supposed
to show the directory tree. The hourglass icon just runs and runs.
I've made sure the RDS service is running before attempting this but no
joy. To work around this, I'm having to use the ODBC Data Source
Administrator under Win98's Control Panel to set up datasources.

Could this possibly be an MDAC thang? Any suggestions on what to check?
My setup: running Studio 4.5.1 on Win98 (1st ed.), MS Access97 databases

single-user version of Enterprise 4.5.1).

No, only running one machine here.

Thanks, all. I guess I'll take this to Allaire support forums and see
if anyone there has already found a solution. As others have mentioned,

Re: Setting Up ODBC Datasources Thru CF Administrator

I had something similar happen, updating my IE and a few other system
patches managed to replace whatever DLL was causing me grief.

I failed to mention that I started experiencing this problem under
version 4.01, before I ever upgraded to 4.5.1. I suspect you're
correct, something must have gotten corrupted, but I can't say exactly
when that might have occurred.

You could be right, and that's one of the things I've suspected to this
point. I've used both IE 5 and Netscape 4.7 with the same results. I
get the "Select File on the Server" window to come up and the
"Retrieving initial directories..." message at the top of the directory
tree, but it never gets beyond that.

How can I test the /cfide/classes path?

The other thing I thought might be causing problems is MDAC
related...but then I realized I probably wouldn't be able to
successfully use the ODBC Data Source Administrator if that were so.
Still, I ran the MDAC Component Checker program and received a bunch of
Field Mismatch/FileDescription/FileVersion errors, so maybe it's time to
clean up the MDAC components, too.

Thanks for the various replies.

This sounds like a Java problem; CF Administrator uses the CFTREE Java
Applet to let you browse the filesystem. You might try using a different
browser, and making sure the URL path /CFIDE/classes works.

Setting Up ODBC Datasources Thru CF Administrator

2000-04-27 Thread Chris Montgomery

Sometimes, it's a bit weird. Im not sure what the explanation is. One day I
might bother to find out. Im sure they'll say it's nowt to do with them, but
It's only ever happened after installing AbleCommerce... and on the same
day. I'd say that's a pretty strong case. Anyway, so far Im not fussed
really because it still works.

2000-04-26 Thread Paul's Mail

datasources for the latest software I installed - not for all my other
sites! Yet all these sites are working and linking OK?!
I am a little scared of re-booting and possibley having to re-establish all
the links for dozens of Db's. Has this happned to anyone before? Using
Cf4.01
