I'm a big fan of mind-mapping software. I use FreeMind
(http://freemind.sourceforge.net/), which is an open source Java
mindmapper very similar to the commercial tools like MindMapper.

The data from Freemind is stored as an XML file, so it's not too hard
to write an XSLT transform to generate HTML from a map. Requires a bit
more work upfront, but makes it easy to customize to *exactly* how you
want it to behave. I use it on the backend to generate Fusebox 4 MVC
skeletons, but that's not quite the same thing :)

RE: Storyboard Tool

2005-06-07 Thread Damien McKenna
There seemed to be too much zen involved in getting the UI to work
correctly, to correctly instruct it that you want to do e.g. a new page,
a new text line, etc. It's definitely a cool idea, but I think a
wireframing tool like FuseBuilder serves at least my purposes better
(especially when it does so much more)

Personally I like it - but it IS limiting. However it's nice: once you've
hit those limits you know that your project has outgrown it. ;^)

In my experience it's great for getting the initial ideas across, but once
that's done you need to leave it behind.

RE: Storyboard Tool

2005-06-03 Thread Dawson, Michael
In the Windows Application (?) section, Visio has text fields, radio
buttons and other form-field-related elements. I like building quick
screen layouts using this tool.

Other than that, I have used Fireworks to layout a page flow. FW's
frames and shared layers make it pretty easy to keep a common theme, but
still allow for different elements on each page.

But, you can't beat a whiteboard. Especially, if the whiteboard has
some sort of digital capability.

I've done this wireframe process for Lorne and it does work great. We add a
comment on this page link for every page that traps the tester's name and
comments. That way we know who said what and which page they meant (I can't
count how many times users think their comments are about one page when it's
actually about another..this fixes that issue).

Some agile folks think that first-cut screen design should be done on a
whiteboard, using stickies for interface objects. Really easy, for anyone
including non-technical participants, really quick, easy to change, easy to
move around.

They also say to take a picture of it when you're done this iteration, but
the last time I tried something similar (but large, covering a biggish
section of a wall), the resolution of the camera wasn't good enough to
capture needed details. That was a long time ago though, and digital camera
tech has come a long way since.

moving into graphical prototypes (no working CFML code, just

Re: Storyboard Tool

2005-06-03 Thread Greg Hamm
Does that mean the end app would be FuseBox??

Doesnt have to, you can use Fusebuilder with just the wireframing /
prototyping and dev notes functionality, and then go off and do your
own process,

_however_ if you do use fusebox, you can take the wireframe, map out
the circuits, put it into pseudo MVC, set all your database tables,
define your program flow, and FB will write the SQL to build the DB,
write the circuits.xml files, create your entire project directory,
write the fusedocs, and write the queries and the display fuses you
defined in your wireframe and prototype, the list goes on,

And the cool thing is that Mike is always adding new features, a new
version was just released,

Cheers
