I'd go through your whole app and implement CFQueryparam, shut off
robust exception information, and implement a sitewide error handler.
I've found places that expose SQL that shows where injection is
possible.

Hi Dave,

I'd also surround _all_ of the places where you display user input
with htmlEditFormat(), as it's kind of open for HTML monkeying

site wide error handler is there just turned off at the momement.

I haven't gone through the cw code yet to do the trimming and cfqueryparams
yet, after final version I will. Cw tends to break whenever you touch anything
in it and after just getting it compliant I decided to wait on the rest. I'm
also concidering going through and re-writing it as it seems like it was
written quite awhile ago and would like to have it use cfc's instead, fix some
of the java in it and get rid of a good chunk of the current code.

I mean that the people looking at his site are after specific info - if he
runs Google adsense on those pages, the content in the ads will also be very
specific and related to the info they are after - he'll get lots of clicks
and lots of cash.

RE: anyone bored?

2005-04-15 Thread Ewok
Took a very long time for the flash paper to load anything. Once it did, it
displayed about half of the pages and kept loading the rest until it was
done. Eventually it showed everything.

The flash form came up quick and easy

The acrobat link took a little loading time but not as bad as the flash
paper.

Good luck

It worked for me, but took a couple of minutes. It ended up being
~26MB. Maybe people expected instant response on their dial-up?

Is there any way you can cut down on this size?

Looks pretty good, too. Maybe I'm just CF_Charmed...

the option i have is to make each recordset smaller which I cant do or move it
to a dedicated server in which case he cant even pay me so thats not an option,
just a joy of shared hosting. I will talk to some higher ups tomorrow at hms
and see what they can do for me.
It works for me just fine on a 4mb line, a lil slow but both load within a

Re: anyone bored?

2005-04-14 Thread Dana
hmm that came up ok if a bit slow... I think slow is ok if the person
can see the thing coming. Whereas the pdf just sort of sat there
saying it was downloading but just looking like a blank page. When I
was researching internet marketing they had a rule of thumb that the
average person won't wait more than 12 seconds for a site before they
get bored and leave. This site is a little different -- it looks as
though it might be of great interest to someone who was interested in
flyfishing. but still, four minutes clearly won't do. But you knew
that. The one I looked at is 47k... I can see that you might want that
level of detail but hmm hmm what about black and white?

Re: anyone bored?

2005-04-14 Thread dave
Actually, slow loading has never been an issue with them, so we stuck with that
format.
It's a pretty unique way that it is done in that type of business and the 10
second rule doesnt apply as this is the only place to get the info.
The pix cant be reduced much farther because detail is key in this type of
thing and black and white would never fly.

hmm that came up ok if a bit slow...
I can see that you might want that

oky.. I hope his target audience correlates with people who have
broadband and for that matter Flying Star is telling me their
connection speed here is very high though efforts to determine what
that means were unsuccessful. Past discussion with more techie
employees has elicited the factum that it's a satellite connection...
my point is that if it's slow here you might want to check see if
someone on a 33,6 can get in at all.

That was initially discussed but the actually data thats there (including pics)
has been on there for about 6 months (we initially just put a pattern page up
till i had time to start on this) and there hasnt been 1 complaint about speed
yet. Like I said most of them start to read while pix are loading but most ppl
understand that they are getting free premium content that is 10x as good as
the rivals paid content so they don't mind.

My mom is on about as slow a line as u can get (aver 19.8) out in the boonies
in ky and she can get it ok, so i'm assuming most ppl wont have troubles, maybe
a wait but no troubles.

Thats why I wanted to have them done in pdf so ppl could save them, and
already they print them out and put into binders.

It's a pretty unique way that it is done in that type of business and the 10

The pix cant be reduced much farther because detail is key in this type of
thing and black and white would never fly.

hmm that came up ok if a bit slow...

CF is supposed to be able to cache the PDFs and FlashPaper docs. Have
support check the CFAdmin settings. Also, you might look at pre-compiling
those, the CFReport tag lets you save the results to a file, and then just
serve the customers the file from the hard drive. It seems building the doc
on the fly each time is what kills you.

HMS has CFX_IMG installed on their 6.1 Linux server, so they should be able
to add it to the 7 server.

It's possible, do you know of a good one that can be used on a shared linux
server?
I wish I could use mossimos cfc but I think he said only on windows :(

How about a CF page that uses java or an image manipulation CFX tag to
automatically create and save the thumbnails for later use in the PDFs?

He actually likes that it loads the full image on the page so that when its
clicked to be enlarged it's already been downloaded and since most people
start of by reading first they dont mind waiting for the pix.

oh, the pdf is? I never got that far. That's a significant point; the
document I mentioned was just formatted text. I thought they were
referring to the site, which also has a lot of images. I assume you've
 tried optimizing those puppies?

Maybe you could keep them around for a few hours, or day or so and then
purge them. That way you kinda keep the most requested copies on disk.

Thats a good idea Connie, I will look into it. The only problem is that if
he adds 300 and say they average 25 mbs apiece thats 7.5 gb just for that
and then we would be getting into a dedicated server again.

Actually that estimate was only if they cached only pdfs, so almost double that
to do flashpaper as well
I think what he needs to do is charge a membership to get them and get his own
box, since damn the site is virtually free...
